The night began with the collection of Peter Simon, founder of the British retailers Monsoon and Accessorize, and that made about $142 million. A second sale followed of modern and contemporary names, totaling $147 million. That edged out last year's comparable sale. Overall, the sell-through rate across both auctions was 86%. Phillips followed the next night with a $20 million evening sale, is 100% sold, and two artist records were set. A Gerhard-Richter abstraction led the sale at about $7.8 million, which was just a bit below its presale estimate. […]
