Enemies of Flourishing | World - Chris Dew
What if the greatest threats to our spiritual flourishing are not the obvious ones we expect, but the ones we have quietly made peace with? Drawing from 1 John 2:15-17, where the apostle warns us that the world and its desires are passing away while those who do the will of God live forever, we are invited to take an honest look at three ancient forces that have been working against human flourishing since the very beginning: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. These are not abstract theological concepts. They are the invisible water we swim in every single day, woven into every advertisement, every scroll through social media, every quiet moment of comparison or craving. The lust of the flesh whispers that we need to feel better at any cost. The lust of the eyes insists we need more to be secure. The pride of life convinces us that our worth is measured by how many people see us and applaud us. This message is a reminder that these temptations are not one-size-fits-all. The world customizes them to fit our history, our wounds, and our wiring. Our algorithms know our tune and they play it on repeat. The invitation here is not to despair but to wake up, evaluate our inputs honestly, and choose the counter-cultural practices of accountability, contentment, generosity, and humility as our weapons in this very real war.

Most of us know the story of Jonah and the whale from childhood, but what happens when we move past the fish and into the harder, more uncomfortable parts of the story? In this message, we take a close look at the moment Jonah watched an entire city of 120,000 people turn from their wickedness, and instead of celebrating, he was furious. That reaction forces us to ask a question that cuts close to home: what does it look like when our hearts slowly drift away from the heart of God? Drawing from Jonah 3:10 - 4:4, we explore how Jonah's story is less about a runaway prophet and more about the relentless, boundary-crossing mercy of God. We are challenged to examine where our own preferences have begun to outpace God's purposes, and where we have quietly decided that certain people are simply not worthy of the grace we ourselves have received. The book of Jonah holds up a mirror, and what we see in it might surprise us.

What happens when we achieve everything we thought would make us whole, only to discover we're still empty? This exploration of 1 Kings 19 takes us into the life of Elijah immediately after one of his greatest victories on Mount Carmel. We meet him not at his strongest, but at his absolute lowest, sitting under a broom tree asking God to take his life. This is the paradox many of us live with: we can be faithful, we can experience God's power, and yet still find ourselves collapsing under the weight of disappointment and exhaustion. The message reveals three transformative truths: mountaintop moments don't make us immune to human weakness, our value to God is never based on our usefulness to Him, and if we only look for God in the spectacular, we'll miss Him in the sustaining. God doesn't respond to Elijah's despair with a sermon or rebuke. Instead, He provides bread, water, sleep, and touch before anything else. This teaches us that God cares for the whole person, not just our spiritual productivity. The whisper of God on Mount Horeb reminds us that intimacy with God often comes not in the earthquake or fire, but in the gentle, quiet moments when we lean in close enough to hear Him. We're invited to stop carrying what Jesus never asked us to carry and to bring our exhaustion, disappointment, and questions directly to the One who promises rest for our weary souls.
