Moses Put It On; Jesus Took It Off

In "The Transfiguration, Part 1," Charles Sebold, lay teacher at New Covenant Church, continues the Adult Sunday School series in Luke with Luke 9:27-31. Jesus' promise that some "will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God" is answered eight days later on a mountain, where three disciples see what is under the veil. The glory there does not cancel the cross Jesus had just announced; it explains it. Only Luke tells us they went up to pray, and once again a hinge of the Gospel turns on Jesus at prayer. His face is altered, not so that He is unrecognizable, but so that glory hidden in His humiliation shines through. Moses' face reflected a glory that faded, and he had to put a veil on; Jesus' glory is His own, and here He takes the veil off. His clothing flashes white like lightning, recalling the Ancient of Days in Daniel 7. Moses and Elijah, the Law and the Prophets whose names close Malachi, both of whom met God on a mountain and left this life strangely, now stand with the One they were waiting for. They speak of His departure, His exodus, which He was about to fulfill at Jerusalem. Luke's verb is his word for the fulfillment of Scripture: the cross is no Plan B, but the appointment the whole Old Testament foretold. Luke's "two men" at the tomb and the ascension show that this exodus spans death, resurrection, and ascension. Peter never forgot it; facing his own death, he called it his exodus and recalled this mountain. The prophets searched to know the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow, and on this mountain two of them got to talk it over with Him in person.
