It's a brand new Asian A.V. Club HANG! and we bring you the wonderful Lena Khan, director of the hit Bollywood dance meets coming of age comedy Best of the Best!
When I heard that there was a film that brought us into the world of competitive collegiate Bolllywood dance, stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) AND co-written by comedian Hasan Minaj, I was like my appreciation for this film is a given.
But then I went into a deep dive of director Lena Khan and I discovered a filmmaker who not only defied her initial career as an engineer, but found her voice not by co-opting herself into making commercial mainstream fare, but by sprinkling her Indian identity in all the projects she's worked on.
We got the chance to chat with Lena about her early days as a reader for Participant Media and how their mission to make entertainment with a social impact helped inspire her debut film The Tiger Hunter. We also got into how she ended up reuniting with Maitreyi after working together on TV, and how finding the right co-star in Priyanka Kedia was key to making that best friend pairing work. And of course, we had to talk about the Bollywood of it all!

Asian A.V. Club podcast: HANG with Vivian Lin (Co- Creator, Showrunner: Crew Girl)
It's a brand new Asian A.V. Club HANG! podcast and we've got a fun one in the form of Co-Creator / Showrunner Vivian Lin of the hit Netflix YA series Crew Girl.
Starring Miku Martineau as Teagan Tao, Crew Girl tells the soapy story of a teenage rower who is forced to start over at a fancy prep school and discovers that the only way to maintain her proximity to rowing is to become the coxswain for the all-boys crew.
Between gaining the trust and respect of her rowdy teammates, Teagan also has to deal with her growing feelings towards two very different boys; the popular rich kid Josh Regis (Sam Braun) and local townie Cam Dillinger (Kyle Clark). A love triangle ensues but rowing is still the heart and soul that runs through this bingeable series.
We got some time to HANG! with Vivian as she walks us through her early days in production, what led to writing, the importance of the cult sci-fi series Killjoy in her life and the difficulties of creating a show from scratch. We rarely get the chance to talk to a showrunner of a series, so forgive me if we are nerding out! OH! and let's just say this is part one of our Crew Girl interviews!

Asian A.V. Club podcast: HANG with Andrew Law (Creator, Writer and Lead Voice: Dang!)
Welcome back to the Asian A.V. Club interview podcast HANG! To be very honest with you, we here at Asian A.V. Club aren't aficionados of animation, let alone ones geared towards adults, but when we heard that Dang! was created by writer/showrunner (and lead voice) Andrew Law, we were curious.
Law has had an amazing career prior to his work on Dang! Besides getting his first job as a staff writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers, he found himself the executive story editor for The Good Place, and eventually the co-executive producer for shows like The Brothers Sun and Hacks. Dang! marks Law's first foray at the top of the leaderboard.
Following the lives of siblings Andrew (voiced by Andrew Law) and Eunice (Poppy Liu), the Dang family dynamic gets even more chaotic when type A big sister Ruthie (Stephanie Hsu) shows up pregnant and needing some familial emotional support... which the two are less than equipped to help with.
We got to HANG with Andrew to talk about how sketch comedy led to his career as a writer, how Dang! was initially pitched as a live action sitcom and the joys of predominantly Asian spaces where most of the people felt open enough to talk about fetish dating and dealing with their mental health.
