Stop Calling Yourself An OG. Warning to Pickleball Posers! | Editorial from Aaron
Recently I heard someone call themselves an “OG” in pickleball… and they started playing in 2023.Listen. Calling yourself an OG after two years is like claiming you’re a gangster because you moved into the neighborhood after the Trader Joe’s opened. So today we’re setting the record straight.Did you play on gym floors where nobody could tell the difference between basketball, volleyball, and pickleball lines?Did people argue whether just standing in the kitchen was a fault?Did your paddle cost $89 and people thought you were trying too hard?Do you know what a Jugs ball is without Googling it?If you don’t… you might not be an OG.We’re talking:Z5 clunk era playersPre–Pickleball TV pioneersThe days before delamination debatesWhen third shot drives could get you benched by a guy in two knee bracesAnd let’s be clear — you don’t call yourself an OG.Other people call you that.Real OGs send me your drama at AskAaronPB@gmail.comIf you enjoyed this episode, like & subscribe. Never Organizes. Always Shows Up!
Is there someone in your pickleball circle who never organizes a game… but somehow always assumes he’s in yours? Maybe he even invites himself. If you’ve got a pickleball freeloader, a pickleball crasher, or—worst of all—both, today’s Ask Aaron episode is for you. This one is an Ask Aaron first. On our last episode, a gentleman named Han wrote in complaining about the on-court banter of his partner, Chad. Chad heard the episode—and instead of whining, blocking, or subtweeting, he went straight to my inbox with a strong counterclaim.Respect. 🫡Chad’s question is simple:What do you do when a friend never organizes a game, but always invites himself to the ones you organize? As someone who’s probably organized 300+ rec games over the last few years, I break down:Why organizers deserve more creditHow freeloaders slowly turn organizers into customer service repsPractical (and petty) ways to force accountabilityWhen it’s time to hand over the clipboardAnd when it’s time to start charging a Non-Organizer Participation SurchargeWe even get into:🚩 Illegal substitution penalties💰 Unscheduled appearance fees📋 Mandatory organizing requirements🍻 Drinks-and-apps restitutionPlus, a shoutout to Phil Locklear in today’s Pickleball Planter Spotlight for his generosity and support of the game worldwide. www.pickleballplanter.comIf you’re tired of the “mind if I join?” guy…If you’re always the one setting the time, place, and lineup…Or if you’re worried you might be that guy…This episode is for you.👍 Like📌 Subscribe🏓 And help us put an end to pickleball crashers and freeloaders once and for all.See you next time. My Pickleball Partner Is SO Annoying — How Do I Make It Stop?
Are you playing pickleball with someone who’s really annoying on the court—and it’s starting to ruin the game for you? 😬 Today on Ask Aaron, we tackle a question from a listener named Han (could it be that Han? 🛸). Han plays rec games with a guy named Chad—a solid player, but one who delivers constant commentary like: “Nice serve!” when the serve was… not nice Over-the-top celebrations after his mistakes Encouragement that somehow makes you feel like the problem So how do you deal with an annoying pickleball partner without becoming the HR department of pickleball? In this episode, I break down: 🏓 Why familiar pickleball partners get more annoying over time 🏓 When to say something (and how to do it without awkwardness) 🏓 The “performance framing” trick to quiet excessive commentary 🏓 A last-resort strategy I call controlled pettiness 😈 🏓 Why some players talk so much in the first place (hint: anxiety, not malice) Plus: Star Wars references, Millennium Falcon pickleball hypotheticals, and a reminder that encouragement is only encouragement if the other person wants it. 👇 Like & Subscribe if you enjoy pickleball etiquette, rec-game drama, and honest advice. It helps the channel grow—and helps support my charity Pickleball Planter, which gets paddles into communities around the world. 📧 Got pickleball drama? Rigged Pickleball Draws?! How to Tell Without Being “That Guy”
Have you ever looked at a pickleball tournament bracket and thought… “Wait. How did THAT happen?” 🤔 In today’s Ask Aaron episode, a listener writes in with a classic rec-play mystery: a “just for fun” monthly tournament where partners and brackets are supposedly random — yet the organizer and his buddies always seem to land the best partners and the cleanest draws. Coincidence? Bad luck? Or is there something… fishy going on? 🛸🏓 I break down: How “random” tournament draws can feel rigged (even when they aren’t) When optics alone can undermine trust How to investigate without becoming the group conspiracy theorist Smart, indirect ways to push for transparency What actual evidence would be needed before making accusations We also talk about: Why organizer-run tournaments can look questionable How controversies at the pro level (hello Professional Pickleball Association) bleed into amateur skepticism Early matchups involving players like Tyson McGuffin, Tyler Loong, and the optics of “random” brackets And why comparing your partner to an immobile 82-year-old named Norm might be… emotionally valid I’ll also explain why you probably don’t want to accuse anyone outright unless you’ve got a full-blown dossier — spreadsheets, patterns, and receipts included. And yes… we talk about UFOs, black helicopters, tin-foil paddle grips, and why you don’t want your pickleball reputation turning into an episode of The X-Files. 👽 If you’ve ever wondered whether your tourney draw was unlucky or unnatural, this one’s for you. 👉 Got drama, politics, or conspiracies in your pickleball group? Send them to askaaronpb@gmail.com And remember: The truth is out there… but so is variance. 👍 Like & Subscribe if you enjoy pickleball takes with humor, honesty, and just a little paranoia.

It’s Not Me, It’s You! How to Break Up With a Pickleball Hothead
Got a pickleball hothead in your group? In today’s Ask Aaron, I break down how to deliver the classic “It’s not me, it’s you” message when a talented player turns every rec session into a miserable experience. This episode comes from a listener (“Sad Panda at Rec Play”) who plays with a guy that:Throws paddlesYells at partnersLoses his temper when he’s losingTurns fun rec play into something that feels like Navy SEAL trainingSound familiar? We talk about:The difference between competitive rec play vs. tournament prepWhy people stop inviting hotheads (even if they’re good)When ghosting is fine — and when a direct conversation is betterExactly what to say (and what NOT to say) if you’re setting a boundaryWhy at rec level, vibes beat victoryI also sympathize a bit with hotheads — pickleball is frustrating — but at the end of the day, nobody owes anyone court time.Plus:🚨 Flag on the play!🚫 15-yard penalty for paddle throwing🧱 Wall drills suggestedPickleball Planter SpotlightShoutout to DJ Howard, a pickleball coach who donated paddles and volunteered his time teaching underprivileged kids pickleball in the Philippines. Great coach, great human — look him up.Learn more about Pickleball Planter at www.pickleballplanter.comIf you’ve got pickleball drama, awkward rec situations, or court politics you want broken down, send them to:📩 AskAaronPB@gmail.comIf you found this episode helpful (or funny), please like and subscribe — I promise I won’t throw a paddle if you don’t.

Charity Pickleball Tourney TRAIN WRECK — Who’s Fault?
A charity pickleball tournament was supposed to be fun… until the ending turned into a full-blown train wreck.A loyal Ask Aaron listener witnessed the awkward aftermath of a charity tournament with a small cash prize and sent in the question:What happens when players win a cash prize — but the charity expected them to give it back?In this episode, Aaron Trost breaks it all down:Why players who win a clearly advertised cash prize did nothing wrongHow unclear communication from the organizer created an impossible situationWhy shaming winners helps no one and hurts the charityThe uncomfortable reality of small cash prizes vs. outdated “swag bag” prizesWhere responsibility actually lies when expectations aren’t alignedAaron draws on real experience organizing, winning, and participating in charity pickleball tournaments to explain why clarity matters — for players, organizers, and charities alike.Along the way, we talk pickleball culture, awkward award ceremonies, and the moment you hope people see you as the next Ben Johns… but instead feel like Ebenezer Scrooge. We also give some well-earned grace to the charity, discuss why misunderstandings happen, and why organizers must clearly set expectations before anyone signs up.🎯 Penalty Flag SegmentAaron throws a moderate penalty flag on the organizer — not for bad intentions, but for poor execution. Think: illegal formation, five-to-ten yard penalty. And yes… a purely symbolic, tongue-in-cheek consequence is suggested — inspired by the famous “butts up” tradition you may have seen in Zane Navratil’s videos — involving unused, warped pickleballs that nobody plays with anymore. Metaphorical. Relax, YouTube.❤️ Thank You to Our SupportersA special thank-you to Friday Pickleball Paddles for generously donating paddles to Pickleball Planter’s international outreach in Southeast Asia. My Pickleball Group Turned Into a Dating App… Now It’s Awkward 😬
On a frigid Kansas City day, we dive into a smokin’ hot pickleball dilemma sent in by listener Jason. His once-fun co-ed pickleball group has been hijacked by dating drama after a new guy joins… and won’t take a hint. After asking one woman out and getting rejected, “Dave” keeps showing up — flirting, dominating conversations, and making the entire group uncomfortable. Sound familiar? In this episode of Ask Aaron, we break down: 🎾 Why pickleball has quietly become a dating-app loophole 👥 How shifting demographics at the courts created the perfect storm 💬 The difference between playing pickleball and running game 🚨 Why becoming the “relationship police” usually backfires ✅ Practical ways to protect your pickleball joy without confrontation Aaron even breaks out a visual aid to explain how dating apps act as a natural social buffer — and why trying to bypass that buffer at the pickleball courts almost always ends badly. You can see that visual aid on our YouTube episode by clicking here. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2o9Ge7uFVlM) Bottom line: pickleball should be about pickleball — not awkward vibes, unwanted advances, or cringe sideline behavior. 🎾 If your pickleball group feels more like Tinder with paddles, this episode is for you.

He Agreed to Drill… Then Canceled Again 😤 | Pickleball Picklecrumbing
Ever line up a pickleball drill session, clear your schedule, grab a bucket of balls… and then get hit with: “My parents are in town.” “My shoulder’s acting up.” “My boss gave me a hard deadline.” In this holiday edition of Ask Aaron, listener Bill shares a frustrating dilemma: a player keeps agreeing to drill — and then cancels at the last minute. Again. And again. So what’s really going on? In this episode, Aaron breaks down: 🚩 Why flakiness and drilling don’t mix 🧠 What’s actually happening in the mind of a serial canceller 🥖 The rise of picklecrumbing (breadcrumbing… but pickleball) 🕒 Why your time is your most valuable pickleball asset ✅ A simple, no-drama way to test commitment — and move on if needed You’ll learn how to stop wasting time waiting by the net, get clarity without confrontation, and protect your calendar so you can finally get the quality drilling reps you’re looking for. Plus, Aaron throws a few penalty flags and shares how you can support Pickleball Planter this season. 🎄 Happy holidays! Seeee Awful Pickleball Sportsmanship?
In today’s episode, we tackle a question that hit close to home for a lot of players:👉 Is it ever okay to loudly celebrate your opponent’s unforced errors in an amateur pickleball tournament? One listener recently played in a local tournament where a player celebrated every missed dink, third shot, or unforced error with a loud “SEEEEE!” — complete with a stare-down. Some called it passion. Others called it awful sportsmanship. So let’s talk about it.In this episode, we cover:Why excessive celebrations are a bad look at amateur tournamentsThe difference between pro-level trash talk and community pickleballHow this kind of behavior makes people not want to sign up for tournamentsWhat the USA Pickleball Rulebook actually says about minor unsportsmanlike behaviorWhy celebrating someone else’s mistake isn’t the flex people think it isAnd yes… what “SEEEEE” even means (if anything)Pickleball is growing fast because it’s competitive and welcoming. If we want amateur tournaments to thrive — and not turn into “win-at-all-costs amateur hour” — we’ve got to clean some of this stuff up.❤️ SUPPORT PICKLEBALL PLANTERI also share a bit about Pickleball Planter, a nonprofit using pickleball to serve children and communities around the world.Learn more or support the mission here:👉 https://www.pickleballplanter.com (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbEpvUXRVNXVxQWloeVNoRWJwalBrZnlkSk9DZ3xBQ3Jtc0trUXVpTVQzbUMxc3hHSkVKbWpuV0F3amJodXkydFhReUxmcVJMTTB5UXloZDkxTk1ERmhxSzdCdkNsa1lmeEZvNmY1dndzZjlZZDZRTUpnQjBRMHpoZENXaUJTaHkxRXc1T1pEdVVUTFdEQlMydzg3Yw&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pickleballplanter.com%2F&v=0F1Ef0hWsw0)👍 LIKE • SUBSCRIBE • FOLLOWIf you enjoyed this episode:👍 Like the video🔔 Subscribe on YouTube🎧 Follow Ask Aaron on Spotify & Apple Podcasts.
