295: The Mandalorian with Steve

It’s Summer and the At The Flicks team are avoiding the heat / rain by going as often to the cinema as they can! On one of these trips, the team watched the first Star Wars film for 7 years – The Mandalorian and Grogu. This spin off from the Disney+ TV series (ok the plot outline was originally designed for season 4), has plenty of action, horrific creatures and the lovable baby Yoda or as he is better known, Grogu.  They were so impressed they felt they had to talk about it. Joining Jeff and Graham for this pop-up review show is Gloucestershire reporter and Star Wars enthusiast Steve Knibbs.  Being a big fan of the Star Wars universe, Steve can bring to light the nuances that our two regulars often miss (not difficult at their respective ages).  However, before we talk Star Wars, Steve was asked about another event that is watched around the world – his reporting on the famous Gloucester Cheese Rolling which recently took place on Cooper’s Hill. To find out Steve’s thoughts on this landmark event and of course The Mandalorian feature film, you will have to check out this current episode.  We believe this is worth your time – a half hour well spent in great company. More Summer reviews will follow when we do our usual wrap up show of the season with Phil The Bear.  Expect fireworks in that one as I am sure Jeff and Phil will have different opinions on what they watch. Until then, maybe we will see you At The Flicks this Summer? Bye for now.

294: Streaming Futures

Welcome to a special streaming show.  Of course, the usual streaming gang are all here, Declan, Graham and Jeff, however this time the content is a little bit different. Dec has his special recommendations, we wouldn’t change that and  we would urge you to catch up with them.  Shows like Small Prophets and Lord Of The Flies – a diverse pair, well produced by The BBC and a couple of gems from Apple.  To find out what we enthuse over on that streaming channel, you will have to listen to the show. That’s our bit of mystery done! But all that is just the Appetiser.  We said this was special.  For this episode we are looking at the changing landscape of the streaming show.  With HBO launching in the UK and the Warners / Paramount deal still dragging all on, what does it mean to you the consumer?  Will it be more or less choice and, perhaps more importantly, could it cost you more for less? This fascinating and topical discussion takes in all of those questions. Now, we will admit that we recorded it over a month ago, but in reality little has changed since we spoke .  Who said the streaming world moves fast? However, what really surprised us where we ended up and what had not been considered when planning the show.  The rise of the short form platforms, like YouTube or TikTok. Indeed, with the success of movies like Obsession and Backrooms, it seems those platforms may, ironically, be a saviour of the cinema.  That is something this same team is going to look at in another show in the near future. Until then, we look forward to seeing you, watching these YouTube inspired movies, At The Flicks Bye for now

293: The Sherbourne – Review

In our previous show we interviewed director Sam Pope about his latest documentary The Little Cinema In Gloucester. For this edition of the podcast Jeff and Graham bring in At The Flicks regular Declan to review the short film.  As well as discussing this charming documentary, Declan also discusses the importance of independent cinema. Not much more to say other than please check out our review. See you At The Flicks
