Austin ISD news, updates and more for May 12
<p>In this episode two Austin ISD educators were recognized at the 2026 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. Megan Vasquez of Becker Elementary received the Leadership Award, bringing home $10,000 for herself and $10,000 for her campus. Alasin DeVeny of Joslin Elementary earned the Lifetime Achievement Award, which includes $25,000 herself and $25,000 for the school.</p><p>Spotlight on student achievement as graduation season begins, the district is highlighting seniors like Rami Kashakhi of Akins Early College High School. Kashakhi will spend the next year in Morocco studying Arabic before attending the University of Texas at Austin for chemical engineering in 2027.</p><p>The district also celebrated academic milestones at the Austin Community College Chancellor's Reception. Projections for the Spring and Summer 2026 sessions include the awarding of 116 Associate Degrees, 37 Level 1 Certificates, and two Occupational Skills Awards to Austin ISD students.</p><p>And May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This year’s theme is "You Matter Here". Our focus this week is <strong>You Belong Here</strong>. Students may participate in activities that promote kindness, inclusion, and connection.
