Podcast Overview

Welcome to Authenticity Lab a podcast about building self-trust in seasons of uncertainty. Hosted by Dr. Kelsey Miles — PhD chemist and songwriter — this show blends scientific thinking with creative reflection to help you navigate identity shifts, overthinking, people pleasing, and the quiet questions we rarely say out loud. Instead of prescribing step-by-step fixes, each episode walks through a simple framework: Calibrate — get honest about what’s actually happening. Experiment — try one small, intentional shift. Optimize — reflect, adjust, and keep what works. This isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about reconnecting with who you already are and expanding your capacity to handle change. New episodes every Tuesday.

Why Do I Downplay My Wins? S3E13

I won Professor of the Year, and the moment they called my name, I got excited. Then immediately embarrassed about being excited.

I used to think that was humility. It's not.

In this episode I break down what's actually happening when we downplay our wins. It's not modesty. It's self-protection. And the difference matters.

I also share the moment two days after the ceremony when my students decorated my entire classroom. Balloons, flowers, confetti, and a book with handwritten notes from every one of them. In that room, the voice that tells me to stay small didn't show up at all.

That told me everything I needed to know.

If you've ever won something and immediately tried to shrink from it, this one is for you.

Be bold.
