[…] In the early 1900s, tuberculosis, also called TB, was one of the most feared and deadly diseases in America. It was often called consumption, so you might have heard it referred to as that. And it was called that because people that were sick with tuberculosis seemed to slowly waste away. Tuberculosis was caused by bacteria that primarily attacked the lungs and spread through the air when an infected person would cough, sneeze, or even spoke. And at the beginning of the 20th century, there were no antibiotics that could cure tuberculosis. People would remain sick for months or years. They would have a persistent cough, chest pain. […]
