About Awkward Asian Theologians

Awkward Asian Theologians is the audio project of AwkwardAsianTheologian.com, and is a collaboration between Matthew Tan (Dean of Studies at Vianney College Seminary in the Diocese of Wagga Wagga) and Daniel Ang (Director of the Archdiocese of Sydney's Centre for Evangelisation). Each fortnight, the podcast brings academic theology to lived life as seen through the eyes of two Australian Catholic laymen, and doing so asianly.

S4E7 When the Curry Runs Dry: Failure

Matt and Dan contemplate the great Asian inheritance: failure. The failure to live up to expectations, the failure to make your parents proud, the failure to become the person your aunties have already told everyone you are. And, of course, the failure to be a good Christian, which is particularly embarrassing when you have a theology degree. Provoked by another podcast’s insightful investigations into the subject, our intrepid hosts venture into the cultural, existential and spiritual dimensions of failure. Along the way, they encounter the contemporary performance society, that relentless machinery of optimisation, productivity and self-improvement that has somehow found its way into the Church. Here, faithfulness is quietly demoted in favour of success, pastors become CEOs, spiritual disciplines become KPIs, and even grace starts to feel like something you ought to be getting better at. The result? Burnout, spiritual exhaustion, and the creeping suspicion that God might be disappointed in your quarterly results. But what if failure is not simply an obstacle to overcome, a lesson to learn, or a testimony to repackage into an inspirational conference talk? What if failure is where our illusions of competence finally collapse, and we begin to discover what God actually asks of us? From the biblical history of spectacularly unsuccessful people to the strange, scandalous logic of the Cross, Matt and Dan consider how failure might be woven into the very fabric of salvation history, both collectively and individually. Perhaps the Christian life is not an endless ascent towards spiritual excellence but a slow, humiliating, occasionally hilarious discovery that God’s faithfulness does not depend on our ability to keep the curry hot. And when the curry runs dry, there may yet be grace enough for a second helping. S4E6 Does Heaven Care About Catering: Persons

The Asians emerge from their pause, presumably from somewhere between the kitchen and the metaphysical realm, to talk about food. Except, as usual, the food is not really about food. Matt and Dan return to a question that has been left simmering for some time: what place do persons have in the economy of salvation? If salvation is a highway to heaven, are persons merely passengers  - or are they somehow part of the road itself? And if persons matter, what happens to the dumplings? The conversation winds through some old assumptions about what Christianity is for, what salvation is supposed to accomplish, and why we have such a strange habit of talking about God as though the divine economy were an Excel spreadsheet. At the centre of it all is the person: our person, other persons, and, most awkwardly, the person of God. What we think a person is turns out to have rather large consequences for what we think salvation is. So the Asians do what Asians do: peel the onion, open another drawer, and discover several more layers of personhood - rest, reception, and relation. Somewhere along the way, the question of whether heaven cares about catering becomes surprisingly difficult to avoid.

S4E5 In the Beginning Was Not the Algorithm: AI

The Asians make up for their suspiciously short episode on priesthood by serving a banquet-sized discussion of AI—or, more precisely, Pope Leo’s first encyclical on artificial intelligence, Magnifica Humanitas. As papal documents continue to grow longer than a wedding banquet, they resist sampling every dish and instead select the greatest hits. They read the encyclical against the realities of contemporary economic life and the century-old tradition of Catholic Social Teaching, paying particular attention to its distinctly Augustinian flavour and the ancient image of the two cities. Rather than banging the doomsday gong, the Asians turn to the encyclical’s more basic questions: What is the human person, and what does Christian witness look like in this new digital ecosystem? Central to their discussion is the need to uncouple evangelisation from the mere distribution of content - and to reconnect it with what it has always been about: one person helping another encounter the person of Christ. In an irony worthy of a fortune cookie that actually contains wisdom, this very new technology may remind us of some very old truths. Beneath the algorithms, platforms and digital smoke lies the enduring Christian claim about the human person - and the thrilling, creative and occasionally perilous relationship between humanity and its tools.
