Amy Winehouse: The Price of Being Honest | From Big Lives
Amy Winehouse was a once‑in‑a‑generation voice, rewriting the rules of modern songwriting by refusing to fake a single feeling. And today, we’re sharing a preview of a new podcast, Big Lives (https://apple.co/4saWuDN), and a special episode about Amy. Journalists Kai Wright and Emmanuel Dzotsi dig into the BBC archive to explore the story behind the icons who shape our culture—trailblazers like David Bowie, LL Cool J, George Michael and Tina Turner—and better understand how each legend set the stage for our contemporary cultural landscape. In this preview, Kai and Emmanuel revisit Amy Winehouse’s rise from North London teenage jazz obsessive to global icon behind Back to Black, and the media machine that turned her pain into spectacle. Norah Jones/Don Was
Blue Note is one of the first and longest standing institutions of Jazz music. Since its formation in 1939 the label has put out albums by Robert Glasper, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Gergory Porter, Bobby McFerrin, and so many more.
To celebrate 85 years of music from this iconic label, Justin Richmond and Blue Note’s current President Don Was recorded a series of interviews with the label’s past present and future: Ron Carter, Meshell Ndegeocello, Charles Lloyd, Julian Lage and today, Norah Jones.
Norah has been with Blue Note Records since releasing her juggernaut 2002 debut album, Come Away With Me. Her latest album, Visions, was created with New York’s Leon Michels of El Michel’s Affair. Their two distinctive sounds blend beautifully to make an album that stands out not only as a new texture in her discography, but some of her strongest work to date.
On today's episode, Norah Jones details her musical upbringing and what it was like striking it big with her debut album. She also performs for us, and talks about the musical freedom she's found as part of the Blue Note family.

Introducing Shaping Sounds: Stevie Wonder, DEVO, the Synth Revolution and My Life Behind the Music
Published 19 May 2026 · Transcript excerpt

The studio's chief engineer, Malcolm Cecil, lived in an apartment one flight up over a delicatessen right next door. Management put him there so he could keep his eye on the front door, and he had to be on call 24-7 in case anything went wrong. Malcolm and I were both musicians, and we had become creative partners and collaborators on a musical project that we called Tonto's Expanding Headband. We pursued it whenever we could get time between our paying gigs. The synthesizer we created, which was at the heart of the project, was Tonto. […]
