When plants mine

Karoline Healy moves between jewellery, material research and speculative futures in her investigations into new forms of precious matter. Through her London-based studio jewellery H₂ERǴ, she investigates regenerative material cultures shaped by ecology, biotechnology, craft, science and ancient knowledge. Drawing from natural growth formations, ironwork, surrealism and alchemical traditions, her work reimagines jewellery as both artefact and an ecological proposition, exploring through craft research and material futures. Alongside her studio practice, Karoline works as a materials consultant and researcher, collaborating with the design industry, global brands to explore material innovation and regenerative alternatives to extractive systems.

Re-framings

What does jewellery remember, and what shapes its meaning? In this episode of the BAJ Podcast, Sofie Boons is joined by jewellery artist Carla Movia to explore how objects can act as patient holders of stories. Through experimental uses of technique and materials, from filigree to sugar and found plastic components, Carla’s practice reframes discarded matter and traditional processes, inviting new ways of seeing, valuing, and interpreting. Moving between acts of collecting, listening, and remaking, the conversation reflects on the relationships between maker, wearer, viewer, and environment and asks how jewellery might create space for reflection in a world shaped by environmental change and material excess.

Fair Min(e)d

In this episode of the BAJ Podcast, Sofie Boons speaks with jeweller and ethical‑making advocate Saskia Shutt. Rooted in a practice shaped by transparency and responsibility, Saskia is a Fairmined‑licensed maker whose work directly supports artisanal mining communities and promotes traceable, positive sourcing. Beyond her own bench, she is an active contributor to groups such as Fair Luxury, Truly Precious, Ethical Metalsmiths, and organisations including Diamonds for Peace, where she helps drive conversations around fairness, accountability, and sustainability within the industry. Together, Sofie and Saskia explore what ethical jewellery looks like in practice, from sourcing Fairmined gold and navigating relationships with mining communities, engaging in policy discussions, to participating in networks pushing for systemic change.  This episode offers a thoughtful and grounded look at the evolving landscape of ethical jewellery, and the role individual makers can play in shaping a more transparent future for the craft. Tune in to hear Saskia’s story, her experiences, and the ideas currently shaping her work.
