Dallas Wax: Southern Boys in Brooklyn, a Shovel Drag at Midnight, and a Song Nobody's Heard Yet Episode 43

We started this one differently. No theme song. No intro. Just the video for "Desert Moon" — dark, shot in a Savannah swamp at midnight with one light on the back of a truck. That's your introduction to Dallas Wax.

Ryan Dallas Wax (yes, that's his real name) moved from Peachtree City, Georgia to New York City, found four other Southern guys who'd all ended up there, and formed a five-piece band playing punk-soaked psychedelic blues rock that Gary compared to Billy Idol stumbling into a Sturgill Simpson record. They've been on tour. They just booked Austin City Limits Festival. Their debut album Metanoia drops June 19th. And they sent us the first track — "Bluff" — a week early.

His mom called the Burt Show. He showed up late. He had no shoes on. It was a great time.

Links:

Dallas Wax: www.dallasWaxband.com

Pre-save Metanoia (June 19): https://awal.ffm.to/257ykd6

Every band we've featured: https://www.bynhopod.com

Spotify playlist: search "Bands You've Never Heard Of"

Email: bynhopod@gmail.com

Support & merch: https://www.bynhopod.com (click "Support")

0:00 - "Desert Moon" Cold Open3:04 - Hello & Welcome4:09 - Gary Reacts: Netflix Should Have These Guys8:19 - Who Is Dallas Wax?12:21 - Are They Going for It? Are You Getting Paid What You're Worth? Cliff Adams of MoneyGigs Has the Answer

Most gigging musicians have no idea what they're actually making per hour. Cliff Adams did the math — and it wasn't pretty.

After 120 gigs in a year, Cliff (jazz pianist, IT veteran, former #1 Uber driver in Cincinnati) realized his gigs were often paying less than minimum wage once drive time, setup, and rehearsal were factored in. So he built MoneyGigs — an app that tracks gigs, rates venues, and tells you exactly what you're worth before you say yes.

This is a special industry insider episode. No music discovery — just an honest conversation about the business side of being a gigging musician.

First 100 listeners get FREE access to all paid features. Invite code: BYNHOFREE

Links:

MoneyGigs: https://www.themoneygigs.com

Invite code + free access: https://www.bynhopod.com

Email: bynhopod@gmail.com

0:00 - Welcome: Special Insider Episode1:40 - Meet Cliff Adams & MoneyGigs5:00 - Cincinnati's #1 Uber Driver — and What It Taught Him10:17 - The Spreadsheet That Changed His Gigging Career13:57 - Cliff's Background: 49 Years of Piano, Jazz & Salsa18:43 - Why He Came Back to Gigging21:06 - Before, During & After: The 3 Stages of a Gig24:50 - The Yelp for Musicians Feature30:35 - Nursing Homes Are Untapped Gig Gold40:22 - People First: Cliff's Two Rules45:43 - On Playing for Free52:01 - TikTok, Shorts & Reddit Strategy1:02:01 - Podcast Length: Does It Matter?13:50 - The App Is Free — Here's How It Works16:29 - Invite Code: First 100 Listeners Free25:01 - Wrap-Up

Yes Officer: One Guy, One Island, and a Grammy-Winning Producer Who Bought a Church Episode 41

Stick around to the end. The opening track from Yes Officer's brand new album — Ignore the Town Crier — plays in fullafter the credits.

Jeremy Harnum is a one-man band from St. John's, Newfoundland making "loud and abrasive music for those who like loud and abrasive music." He grew up in a town of 450 people. Came out in 2018. Taught himself to record. Made three albums entirely alone. Then a Grammy-winning LA producer — the guy behind Adele, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, The Greatest Showman — bought an old church in Jeremy's tiny hometown and started a record label. Jeremy sent a cold pitch. That became Ignore the Town Cryer, out now.

JR found this band while researching Newfoundland for a community theater production of Come From Away. Hefound a podcast called Off Da Rock Radio, went through 25 artists, and landed here.

In part one, Gary hears four songs, from 2017 to the brand new single. In part two, Jeremy joins live.

Links:

https://yesofficer.bandcamp.com/track/salt-in-the-wound

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1zT8HHOprlVgO78X9rjcQB?si=911aacf7ff9a46a6

0:00 - Special Note: New Album Is Out + Post-Credits Song3:42 - Come From Away & Why JR Went to Newfoundland9:36 - The Bio: "Loud and Abrasive Music"13:11 - "You've Still Got Time" — 201719:19 - Gary Reacts: DC Hardcore, No Click Track24:54 - Gary Picks "Crisis Actor" — 201927:28 - Gary Reacts: He's Growing29:22 - The Vocals-in-the-Mix Debate34:54 - "Identity Parade" — 202044:47 - "Salt in the Wound" — New Single51:17 - Gary Reacts: Five Bands in One Song1:55:38 - PART 2: Jeremy Harnam Joins Live58:27 - Origin: One-Man Band Since 20172:07:43 - How a Song Gets Made: Guitar Riff First10:32 - The Recording Process12:33 - The RPM Challenge: Album in 28 Days16:28 - The Thematic Arc: All Four Albums Explained22:20 - "Identity Parade": Why Nothing Was Right24:34 - Gary: "Did You Find Rage Against the Machine?"27:32 - The Supertramp Compliment29:08 - Greg Wells: The Cold Pitch That Worked30:02 - A Grammy Producer Bought a Church in His Hometown36:10 - "This IS Newfoundland Music"42:00 - How Greg, Mark & Robert Produced the Album45:00 - Finally Bringing the Vocals Up47:48 - Live Shows: Drummer Shortage & What's Next3:03:44 - Vinyl: 100 Copies Only05:58 - He Does His Own Album Art (He's Also a Photographer)3:15:26 - Peace Out3:16:52 - POST-CREDITS: Full Opening Track from *Ignore the Town Cryer*
