Episode #250: Lick A Tree, Bite A Grapefruit: LCBO West Coast IPAs | Adjunct Series

The West Coast and American IPA has had a resurgence this decade, and it's an exciting time to be a fan of clear and piney India Pale Ales. Cee and Nate made a list, headed out to respective LCBO stores in Hamilton and Ottawa, and grabbed a bunch of readily available West Coast and American IPAs. While crushing the beers, they got into the actual WC resurgence as a pendulum swing to the over-abundance of hazy IPAs, how many breweries are now introducing a West Coast IPA as a SKU in the LCBO (when traditionally it had mostly been the OG breweries), the difference in availability between stores and regions, the vast variety of approaches within the umbrella of both West Coast and American IPAs, the popularity of those weird social media skits about how gross IPAs are, the brands who have stood the test of time and how they got their longevity, and the evolution of the style into the Modern WCIPA (less malty, more hoppy, more approachable). They got into a slew of LCBO Westies between them: Nickel Brook Head Stock, Bellwoods Pig, Burdock Bears Pale Ale, Sawdust City Lone Pine, Amsterdam Bone Shaker, Cameron's Resin Rodeo, Bellwoods West of the Moon collaboration with Dominion City, Anderson Craft Ales IPA, Muskoka Mad Tom, Great Lakes Octopus Wants To Fight, Great Lakes Karma Citra. Episode #249: You're Tasting Money with Nick Bobas of Slake Brewing | Adjunct Series

Prince Edward County is fast becoming one of the most exciting craft beer destinations in Canada, and one brewery arguably set off this latest wave. Slake have been going from strength-to-strength over the past six years, so Co-Founder and Head Brewer Nick Bobas jumped back on the pod to hang with Cee and Nate. They got into their growth over the past two years since they were on the podcast, their recent sixth anniversary and the three beers they dropped to celebrate, how their taproom and lineup have changed over the years, their approach to LCBO and pricing, their strong connection with Quebec and why folks from La Belle Province love The County, how getting Freestyle Manilita hops works, their unique approach to and process for their beers, the world of fruit extracts, their approach to volume and packaging, why they do mostly low ABV beers, the differences between a Session IPA and a Pale Ale, the value of hop selection, and how collaboration has been for them. We got into a gang of killer Slake brews: Stray Light Lager, Mosey Pilsner, Low Key Quebec-style Pale Ale, Cozy Dunkel collaboration with True History, Rest In Peaches IPA with peaches collaboration with Blood Brothers, Pollen IPA, and Darren the One Eyed Cat (2026 Cabernet Sauvignon) Grape Ale. This was amazing - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Episode #248: The Beer That Built The House with Simon Livingstone of L'Espace Public | Adjunct Series

One of our oldest friends of the show is Simon Livingstone, Co-Owner and Head Brewer at Hochelaga institution, L'Espace Public. Simmo (as Cee calls him) jumped back on to hang with Cee and chat about what they've been doing since his last time on the pod over four years ago, the success of their low ABV Lager, the move to tall cans to please retail stores and how that affects their production, their dedication to short cans amidst a tall can-friendly market, how "the beer that built the house" - Bière de Balcon (affectionally known around the brewery as Tony Balconi) - continues to outsell their other brands, whether "jabroni" is a slur, the importance of music venues and the government crackdown on permits in Montreal (including their own space they want to permit to show live music), why they collaborated with rock venue Turbo Haus, how the BAOS collab Bière de Vacances came about and the changes to the newest batch (and the lactose shortage), Simmo's passion for low ABV fruited coffee sours, and their upcoming collaboration with Montreal legends HELM. They got into five killer L'Espace beers: Olympique Lager de Course (Light Lager), Bière de Balcon Sûre aux Framboises (Raspberry Sour), Turbo Soif Italian Lager collaboration with Turbo Haus, Bière de Vacances Sûre Creamsicle (Creamsicle Sour) collaboration with BAOS Podcast, and Bière de Vacances Sûre aux Pavlova collaboration with BAOS Podcast for our 10th anniversary. This was a lot of fun - enjoy Simmo's raps!
