What does it mean to pursue Christ with our whole lives?
In the third movement of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, the music builds with energy, urgency, and joy. That same kind of wholehearted pursuit shows up in Paul’s letter to the Colossians, where he reminds the church that we don’t need to add to Christ to find fullness of life.
In this third sermon of our series exploring Colossians alongside Coltrane’s musical masterpiece, we’ll consider what it means to stay rooted in Christ, stop chasing the things that promise to make us whole, and live with the joy and gratitude that come from God’s transforming love.
Our faith isn’t about proving we belong through rules, rituals, or religious performance. In Christ, God has already welcomed us into new life. We are free to keep growing, walking in faith, and pursuing the One who holds all things together.

In Part 2 of A Love Supreme, we turn to “Resolution” and Colossians 1:24–2:5 to explore what it means to live as the body of Christ in the world. The church, as Christ's body, makes Christ visible.
Reflecting on John Coltrane’s spiritual journey, Paul’s vision of “Christ in you, the hope of glory,” and the call to Christian maturity, we are freed to respond to God’s generosity by showing up for our neighbors, standing with those who suffer, and embodying the radical love of Jesus.
Lord, resolve our fears and weaknesses. Resolve our attachment to lesser gods. Resolve our commitment to the way of Jesus.

A Love Supreme: Acknowledgement - Colossians 1:9-23
Sometimes we don’t need new information, but need to remember what we already know: Jesus is big enough.
In Colossians 1, the writer of Colossians responds to a church facing pressure, uncertainty, and the temptation to make Jesus smaller. His first move is to pray and acknowledge Christ: the Love Supreme who holds all things together.
Drawing on Paul’s hymn in Colossians and John Coltrane’s album A Love Supreme, we consider what it means to remember who Jesus is when we are overwhelmed, when we are suffering, and when we are called to act.
