Choosing Love Over Fear: Bringing the Golden Rule Into Today’s Political Climate

Show Notes: To Be Encouraged Podcast Episode Title: Choosing Love Over Fear: Bringing the Golden Rule Into Today’s Political Climate Hosts: Rev. Dr. Brad Miller & Bishop Julius C. Trimble This episode of the To Be Encouraged podcast dives into the intersection of faith, politics, and the timeless relevance of the Golden Rule—“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” With midterm elections approaching, Rev. Dr. Brad Miller and Bishop Julius C. Trimble offer a candid conversation about fear-based politics, the role of the faith community, and the chance each of us has to vote, lead, and live by the values of kindness and justice. Three Takeaways 1. The Golden Rule Has Never Been More Urgent Rev. Dr. Brad Miller and Bishop Julius C. Trimble remind us that the Golden Rule is foundational to Christian ethics and, more broadly, to community life (00:42). In an era riddled with division and negativity, treating others with respect and dignity is both biblical and essential for healing political rifts. Bishop Julius C. Trimble emphasizes that disregarding the humanity of others is not just a moral lapse but an affront to the image of God in which all are created (02:01). 2. Counteract Fear with Positivity and Service The conversation highlights the power of good news and intentional acts of service to challenge the culture of fear, particularly in political discourse (03:57). Both hosts share stories of worship, intergenerational joy, and the transformative power of tangible, local action—like volunteering in food pantries (23:22). Bishop Julius C. Trimble calls for a focus on what we can do for others, rather than what (or whom) we are against. 3. Vote and Lead with Future Generations in Mind As elections near, the episode urges listeners to weigh their choices—both in voting and in daily life—by asking, “Will our children and grandchildren look back and say ‘thank you,’ or will they ask, ‘What were you thinking?’” (31:36). Bishop Julius C. Trimble encourages active civic participation and policies that promote justice, welcome, and real solutions for all. Ultimately, servant leadership and the courage to embody love and justice are what create lasting change (12:22). Keep up with To Be Encouraged for more conversations about courage, faith, and the call to make a difference in a discouraged world.

Living a Good Life Lessons from Dolly Parton’s Legacy of Service and Hope

Show Notes – To Be Encouraged Episode Summary In this episode of To Be Encouraged, Reverend Dr. Brad Miller and Bishop Julius C. Trimble reflect on the life and legacy of Dolly Parton following her recent passing, exploring the qualities that define a “good life.” Their heartfelt conversation weaves together stories of Dolly’s impact, lessons from Wesleyan theology, and practical advice for living with hope and generosity in today’s world. Three Key Takeaways 1. A Good Life is Rooted in Service and Generosity Reverend Dr. Brad Miller and Bishop Julius C. Trimble highlight Dolly Parton as an exemplar of serving others and giving generously. Dolly’s commitment to philanthropy—such as her book-gifting program for children—demonstrates how it’s possible to accumulate wealth while still focusing on blessing others. Bishop Julius C. Trimble stresses that you don’t have to be a billionaire to make a positive difference: “You don’t have to be a multi-millionaire to do all the good that you can.” (03:55) 2. Universal Respect Transcends Differences The hosts observe that Dolly Parton’s unique ability to be loved and respected across political, cultural, and theological divides came from her unapologetic commitment to hospitality and celebrating diversity. Bishop Julius C. Trimble recalls how she stood for what she believed was right, even when it wasn’t universally popular—for example, voicing support for Black Lives Matter. Her approach was to seek what is right, not just what is popular or aligns with a particular “side.” (08:28) 3. Faith, Community, and Flourishing Go Hand in Hand Drawing from Wesleyan tradition, Bishop Julius C. Trimble reminds listeners that there is “no holiness apart from social holiness”—our calling is to contribute to human flourishing through relationships, grace, and hope. Living a good life isn’t just about survival, but about helping ourselves and others flourish by investing in hope, building community, and living out our faith in practical ways. (12:42) Memorable Quote “A good life is a life in which we are willing to serve and help others.” — Bishop Julius C. Trimble (10:29) Listen to the full conversation for advice on encouragement, examples of servant leadership, and inspiration for living a life well-lived. Becoming Prisoners of Hope: Faith, Community, and Resilience

In this uplifting episode of To Be Encouraged, Reverend Dr. Brad Miller and Bishop Julius C. Trimble tackle the question: Is hope in short supply? In a world increasingly marked by uncertainty and discouragement, they explore the essential role of hope and its power to transform not just individual lives but entire communities. Drawing from their faith, personal stories, and even Hollywood, the hosts deliver practical insights and encouragement for listeners grappling with despair or looking to rekindle their own hope. Three Key Takeaways 1. Hope Is More Essential Than We Realize Reverend Dr. Brad Miller and Bishop Julius C. Trimble discuss how hope is just as vital for survival as food, water, and air. Drawing on historical examples—such as survivors of concentration camps and catastrophes—they argue that when people lose hope, they often lose the will to live. Bishop Julius C. Trimble references theologian Jürgen Moltmann’s “theology of hope,” reminding us that hope is not passive anticipation but active faith in the future, both for ultimate fulfillment and for real, tangible improvement in the present. (03:03) 2. Hope Is Built Together—in Community Building and maintaining community is central to manifesting hope. Bishop Julius C. Trimble shares insights from tragedies such as the 1995 Chicago heatwave, where isolation led to unnecessary loss of life (07:02). Both hosts emphasize that engaging in good works, checking on others, and fostering genuine relationships are ways to keep hope alive, especially during difficult times. The local church and other organizations can play a critical role as “ambassadors of hope,” making a real difference by reaching out to the lonely and discouraged. (08:24) 3. Encouragement and Faith Are Sources of Enduring Hope The episode ends with encouragement from both scripture and popular culture. Quoting The Shawshank Redemption, Bishop Julius C. Trimble reminds listeners: “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.” (12:43) He shares his mission: to encourage all people with the love of Christ to rise to their highest potential, emphasizing that hope, grounded in God’s love and justice, empowers us to face difficulties and support each other.
