   #9 - Lea "Talley" Clower

In this episode, we explore why relationships, trust, and industry expertise can matter more than price in logistics—from freight factoring and broker-carrier partnerships to customer retention, heavy-haul transportation, leadership, and building a professional identity. Lea "Tally" Clower, Senior Vice President at Scale Funding, joins the conversation to share lessons from nearly three decades in factoring. He explains how new freight brokers can establish credit, earn the confidence of carriers and factoring companies, and build the operational foundation needed to survive their first 12 to 24 months. Tally also discusses why education has become central to his approach to business development. Instead of treating every conversation as a transaction, he focuses on helping brokers and carriers find the information, resources, and relationships they need to succeed. Later, Desmond and Luis examine how Bear Down Logistics lost a major opportunity even though its quote was approximately $10,000 lower than the winning bid. The difference was not price. The competing company met the end customer face-to-face, established trust, and demonstrated its expertise. The story offers a valuable lesson for freight brokers, carriers, freight forwarders, and logistics professionals: customers do not always choose the cheapest option. They often choose the people who make them feel most confident. The conversation also covers knowing the value of your expertise, building a strong logistics team, and Desmond's deliberate transition from being known primarily as a former Chicago Bears player to becoming recognized as the founder of Bear Down Logistics. In This Episode, You'll Learn: • Why relationships remain essential in a technology-driven logistics industry • How new freight brokers can establish credit with factoring companies • Why cargo insurance can help a new brokerage build credibility • How a factoring partner can help carriers feel confident working with a new broker • Why paying carriers promptly strengthens long-term relationships • What factoring companies look for in new freight brokerages • How education can become an effective business-development strategy • How transparency and personal branding create new business opportunities • How Desmond Clark built an identity beyond his NFL career * Relationships Beat Price Logistics is built on rates, capacity, equipment, deadlines, and execution. But when customers are deciding who they can trust with an important shipment, price is only one part of the decision. A company can offer the better rate and still lose the business if another provider establishes a stronger relationship, communicates its expertise more effectively, and gives the customer greater confidence. That principle also applies to brokers, carriers, freight forwarders, and factoring companies. The strongest logistics partnerships are built when everyone communicates honestly, fulfills their responsibilities, and understands the value each party brings to the transaction. Technology can make logistics faster, but relationships still determine who receives the next opportunity. * Timestamps 01:00 — Lea "Tally" Clower joins the conversation 05:57 — How new freight brokers can establish credit 13:23 — Using education to drive business development 18:34 — The tension between freight brokers and carriers 24:00 — How factoring companies affect industry relationships 29:25 — Losing a major logistics opportunity despite the lower bid 39:07 — Order takers versus trusted industry experts 49:18 — Building Desmond Clark's identity beyond the NFL * What matters most when choosing a logistics provider: price, expertise, communication, relationships, or execution? A Broker's Guide to Better Quotes and Carrier Relationships With Carmelo Messina

Carmelo Messina is the VP of Sales at 123Loadboard, a leading freight-matching network connecting brokers, carriers, owner-operators, and shippers across North America. With a community of more than 35,000 active carriers and 5,000 brokers, 123Loadboard helps close the capacity gap and simplify the freight-matching process. In his role, Carmelo focuses on sales growth, industry relationships, and helping logistics professionals use technology to build stronger broker-carrier partnerships and smarter freight solutions. Known for fostering industry partnerships, he brings a competitive edge and a team-first mindset shaped by his experience as an NFL linebacker. In this episode… In freight, the right relationship often matters as much as the right rate. Brokers, carriers, and shippers all rely on trust, clear expectations, and consistent follow-through to keep freight moving without unnecessary risk. What separates transactional freight work from partnerships that last? The answer is a relationship-first approach backed by stronger systems and better carrier vetting. Carmelo Messina, a logistics sales leader with deep experience in the load board and freight marketplace space, explains that brokers and carriers can build better partnerships by asking practical questions about preferred lanes, equipment, freight type, and long-term fit before a load ever moves. Carmelo also highlights the value of using multiple tools, maintaining clear SOPs, and adding human verification to reduce fraud and strengthen trust. The lesson is clear: sustainable logistics success comes from combining personal relationships with disciplined processes. In this episode of Bear Down Level Up, Desmond Clark talks with Carmelo Messina, VP of Sales at 123Loadboard, about why relationships, carrier vetting, and trust shape logistics success. A former NFL tight end who played 12 seasons with teams including the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, and Miami Dolphins, Desmond transitioned his leadership and teamwork skills from professional sports into entrepreneurship. His leadership focuses on operational excellence, process-driven growth, and developing strong partnerships that support Bear Down Logistics' mission to deliver reliable transportation services. In this episode… In logistics, the best opportunities often come from knowing exactly where you fit in the bigger picture. Preparation matters, but so does being able to step into the right room, explain your value clearly, and build trust face-to-face. What happens when strategy, AI, and real-world relationship-building come together at an international freight conference? The answer is a sharper, more intentional approach to winning project cargo opportunities. Desmond Clark and Louis Santana, logistics professionals specializing in heavy haul and freight execution, share how they used AI to identify their strongest position before attending Breakbulk Europe: becoming the US execution arm for international and domestic partners moving freight from port to final destination. Rather than leading with cost savings, they focused on certainty, permitting knowledge, domestic execution, and solving the mystery that often begins once cargo reaches US shores. Louis also highlights how direct conversations with international contacts validated their approach and opened doors that would not have been possible through cold calls alone. The episode reinforces that AI can sharpen strategy, but trust is still built through clarity, presence, and relationships. In this episode of Bear Down Level Up, Desmond Clark, President, and Louis Santana, Vice President, of Bear Down Logistics, chat about leveraging AI, trade shows, and face-to-face networking to create heavy haul opportunities. They share why Breakbulk Europe validated their strategy, how US execution solves project cargo pain points, and what brokers can learn from getting in the room.
