Episode 88: Common strength training injuries and what to do about it!

What most people don’t realize is that many injuries are caused by pre-existing issues or technique flaws, not the exercise itself.

From shoulder impingements to deadlift strain, your body’s movement patterns and mobility play a huge role in preventing pain.

For example, a common shoulder mistake? Overusing high-volume overhead exercises without proper mobility or control, which can cause tissue stress over time.

Deadlifts aren’t inherently bad—bad form or ego lifting are the culprits. Teaching proper hinge mechanics and avoiding excessive weight is key.

Even with squats, maintaining a neutral spine and good ankle mobility can save your back from long-term issues.

So, next time you hit the gym, focus on technique, mobility, and listening to your body's signals.

Remember: pain is often a warning sign, but not all discomfort signals injury—know when to modify and when to rest.

EPISODE 87 — How to stay motivated

🎧 Streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music

Waiting to "feel motivated" before you train? That's exactly why most people stall out.

This week, Ross and I unpack why motivation is the wrong thing to build on — and what actually keeps people consistent for the long haul:

– Why consistency comes FIRST and motivation only accentuates it (it can't be the thing that gets you started) – Finding your real "why" — training for life, not just the mirror ("What are you training for?" "Life.") – Why doing less in less time keeps you showing up (workouts went from 2.5 hours to 30–45 minutes) – How unrealistic goals set you up to quit — losing 5 lbs in a month is actually a win – Why you need to give it 4–6 months, not 4–6 weeks, before deciding it "isn't working" – Spotting barriers to success — sometimes the goal was planted by someone else and you don't actually want it – Why walking quietly beats running for fat loss, and where strength training fits

Bottom line: you won't always feel like it. Build the habit first, find a “why” that's actually yours, and let motivation be the bonus — not the requirement.

There's almost always 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 you can train. The skill is knowing what.

🎧 Full episode out now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music.
