Why Faulty Promises Lead to Lack of Trust
In this episode of Becoming More Like Jesus, we return to our journey through the Sermon on the Mount and Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:33–37 about promises, oaths, and the integrity of our words. Broken promises can have a lasting impact on our relationships. When someone says they will do something and doesn’t follow through, trust begins to erode. Jesus challenges His followers to live differently—not relying on exaggerated promises, oaths, or declarations to convince others that our words are true. Instead, He calls us to be people whose “yes” means yes and whose “no” means no. What does this teach us about honesty, integrity, trust, and Kingdom living? And how can our words reflect the character of Jesus in a world where promises are often easily made and easily broken? Join us as we explore Matthew 5:33–37 and consider what it looks like to become people others can trust because our words are honest, consistent, and rooted in integrity. Scripture: Matthew 5:33–37 Key takeaway: We don’t need elaborate promises to prove that we are trustworthy. As followers of Jesus, our everyday “yes” and “no” should be enough.

Divorce is Messy
In this episode of the Becoming More Like Jesus podcast, we walk through Matthew 5:31–32 and Jesus’ challenging teaching on divorce. Divorce is messy, painful, and deeply personal, and this conversation approaches the topic with both truth and grace. We explore how Jesus’ words point us toward God’s design for marriage: unity, faithfulness, and covenant love that reflects Christ’s relationship with His church. Along the way, we look at insights from other scholars to better understand the historical and spiritual weight of divorce in Jesus’ day, while also acknowledging the real hurt and brokenness people experience today. If you’ve been impacted by divorce, this episode is not about condemnation, but about understanding the heart of Jesus, the seriousness of covenant relationships, and the grace He offers to all of us in our brokenness.

Watching Where Your Eyes Look
In this episode of Becoming More Like Jesus, we dive into Jesus’ challenging words from Gospel of Matthew 5:27–30 and what it truly means to live with a Kingdom heart by “watching where your eyes look.” Building on last week’s discussion about anger and reconciliation, this episode explores the deeper root of sin—how what we allow our eyes to dwell on can shape our hearts. Jesus raises the standard beyond outward actions to inward transformation, calling us to a life of purity, integrity, and wholeness. We take an honest look at the reality of sexual sin—why it’s so powerful, so destructive, and so often avoided in conversation. Through examples from Scripture, we see how unchecked desire has led to brokenness, division, and spiritual darkness throughout history. But this isn’t just about warning—it’s about hope. You’ll hear practical, real-life steps for cutting off temptation and pursuing sexual integrity in a world full of distractions. From setting boundaries to seeking accountability, this episode equips you to take seriously Jesus’ call to radical action—removing anything that pulls your heart away from God. If you’ve struggled, you’re not alone. There is grace, healing, and restoration available. This episode is an invitation to pursue wholeness, to reclaim purity of heart, and to walk in the freedom Jesus offers. Tune in and learn what it means to guard your eyes—and your heart—as you become more like Jesus.

Anger as Murder
In this episode of Becoming More Like Jesus, we dive into one of Jesus’ most challenging teachings from the Sermon on the Mount—His connection between anger and murder. At first glance, this passage may seem extreme. But Jesus isn’t just concerned with outward actions—He’s after the condition of our hearts. Where does anger come from? What does it lead to? And how should we respond when it takes hold of us? As Jesus reclaims the true meaning of God’s command, He calls us beyond surface-level obedience into lives marked by humility, reconciliation, and peace. Instead of holding grudges or letting anger fester, we’re invited into something radically different: pursuing restoration with others, even when it’s difficult. In this episode, we explore what it means to take reconciliation seriously—leaving what we’re doing to make things right, addressing conflict quickly, and refusing to let anger imprison our hearts. Jesus’ Kingdom is one of unity, forgiveness, and healing, and He shows us a better way to live. So the question is: who do you need to be reconciled with today?

Why It's Important to Practice
In this episode of Becoming More Like Jesus, we take a deeper look at Jesus’ powerful words in Matthew 5:17–20 and what they mean for our lives today. Did Jesus come to do away with the law—or to fulfill it? And what does that mean for how we live? As we continue from last week’s call to be the light of the world, we explore how obedience, practice, and a wholehearted approach to Scripture shape us into people who truly reflect Christ. Jesus doesn’t lower the bar—He raises it, calling us into a deeper, more transformative righteousness that goes beyond outward behavior and reaches the heart. We’ll wrestle with challenging truths: why all of Scripture matters, how Jesus fulfills the law, and what it looks like to faithfully live in light of His Kingdom today. Following Jesus isn’t easy—but it leads to a restored, grace-filled life that changes not only us, but the world around us. Will you take Him seriously? Will you follow where He leads?

You Are the Light of the World
In this episode of the Becoming More Like Jesus podcast, we continue our journey through Jesus’ words in Matthew 5 by exploring what it truly means to be the light of the world. Last week, we talked about being the salt of the earth—how we are called to preserve what is good and bring life and flavor to a world that often feels dry and broken. This week, we take the next step as Jesus calls us not just to influence the world, but to illuminate it. Drawing from Matthew 5:14–16, we unpack the powerful imagery of a city on a hill and a lamp on a stand. In a time when light was scarce and precious, even the smallest flame had great impact. In the same way, Jesus calls us to shine boldly in a world that often feels dark—bringing hope, clarity, and direction to those around us. We also wrestle with the challenge of hiding our light. What happens when we keep our faith private or fall into spiritual routine? Jesus reminds us that our light isn’t meant to be concealed—it’s meant to point others to Him. When we live out our faith through tangible acts of love and goodness, people don’t just see us—they are led to glorify our Father in heaven. This episode invites you to reflect deeply: Are you shining the light of Christ in your daily life? Where might your light feel dim or hidden? Who inspires you by the way they radiate Jesus? What’s your next step in living as light in the world? We close with a prayer, asking Jesus to help us live as a visible expression of His Kingdom—bringing His light into places of darkness, decay, and despair. Let’s be people who don’t just carry the light—but shine it.

You Are the Salt of the Earth
What did Jesus really mean when He called us the “salt of the earth”? In this episode of the Becoming More Like Jesus podcast, we move beyond the Beatitudes and into a powerful calling—one that challenges us to live lives that influence, preserve, and bring flavor to the world around us. Drawing from Matthew 5:13, we explore how followers of Jesus are meant to stand against spiritual decay and reflect His Kingdom in everyday life. Salt in Jesus’ time wasn’t just a seasoning—it was essential for preservation. In the same way, we are called to carry His presence into a broken world, helping others encounter truth, restoration, and life. But what happens when we lose that distinctiveness? Through practical insight and spiritual reflection, this episode will encourage you to: Understand your role as “salt” in today’s world Recognize where God is calling you to influence others Reflect on areas in your life that need renewal and spiritual depth Step into a life that points others toward Jesus Whether you feel spiritually dry or ready to make an impact, this episode will challenge and inspire you to live a life that truly tastes different. Be salt.

Blessed Are the Persecuted
In this final episode of our Beatitudes series, we explore Jesus’ powerful words in Matthew 5:10–12: “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” What does it really mean to be persecuted for following Jesus? And how can something so difficult be called a blessing? In this episode, we unpack how living a life shaped by Christ will inevitably bring resistance from the world. Jesus doesn’t hide this reality—in fact, He promises it. Yet, He also calls us to rejoice, reminding us that our reward is not found here, but in heaven. We also look at the inspiring story of Polycarp of Smyrna, a second-century bishop and disciple of the apostle John, whose unwavering faith in the face of death paints a powerful picture of what it means to remain faithful under persecution. His life—and death—challenge us to consider what it truly means to follow Jesus with courage, humility, and eternal perspective. As we wrap up the Beatitudes, this episode invites you to examine your own faith: Will you remain faithful when it costs you something? Join us as we learn how persecution, though painful, draws us closer to Jesus and shapes us more into His likeness.

Blessed Are the Peacemakers
Welcome back to the Becoming More Like Jesus podcast. In this episode, we continue our journey through the Beatitudes by exploring Jesus’ powerful words: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9). Building on last week’s discussion about purity of heart, we now turn to what it truly means to be a peacemaker. This episode unpacks how peacemaking goes beyond avoiding conflict—it’s about actively pursuing unity, reconciliation, and right relationships. Peacemakers live out their identity in Christ by bringing harmony not only in personal relationships, but also within communities and the world around them. Drawing from Philippians 4:4–9, we look at Paul’s practical guidance for cultivating peace: rejoicing always, choosing gentleness, replacing anxiety with prayer, and fixing our minds on what is true, noble, and praiseworthy. These practices shape us into people who reflect God’s peace in every situation. We also explore how peacemaking involves forgiveness, justice, and loving even those who are difficult to love. Ultimately, living as peacemakers points to our identity as children of God—people who reflect His heart and participate in His mission to restore unity between God and humanity. Join us as we discover how pursuing peace leads us deeper into the life, freedom, and Kingdom of Jesus—here and now.

Blessed Are the Pure In Heart
In this episode of the Becoming More Like Jesus podcast, we continue our journey through the Beatitudes by exploring Jesus’ words: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” (Matthew 5:8) What does it really mean to be “pure in heart”? Is it about rule-following and outward behavior—or something deeper? Together, we unpack how Jesus shifts the focus from external appearances to the condition of our inner world. Through His challenge to the Pharisees and the powerful imagery of a clean cup, we’re reminded that true transformation begins within. Purity of heart isn’t about perfection—it’s about aligning our minds and desires with Christ so we can recognize His presence in our everyday lives. This episode also gets personal, reflecting on how patterns of sin, pride, comparison, and anxiety can cloud our ability to see God at work—and how returning to a life of integrity, prayer, and Scripture brings clarity and closeness with Him again. You’ll walk away with practical rhythms to pursue a pure heart, along with encouragement to keep going, even when it’s hard. Because the promise still stands: those who truly desire God will see Him. Let’s pursue a heart that longs for Jesus above all else.

Blessed Are Those Who Hunger and Thirst For Righteousness
In this episode of Becoming More Like Jesus, we continue our journey through the Beatitudes by exploring Jesus’ words in Gospel of Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” What does it really mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness? Is Jesus talking about perfect rule-following, or something deeper? In this conversation, we explore the biblical meaning of righteousness—living in right relationship with God and with others. Looking at Jesus’ teaching throughout the Gospel of Matthew, we see how He challenged the rule-focused righteousness of the Pharisees and called His followers to something far greater: hearts that truly long for God’s Kingdom. Together we’ll reflect on the tension between rule-following and genuine transformation, the danger of focusing on others’ faults instead of our own hearts, and what it looks like to truly desire a world shaped by God’s ways. When we begin to crave right relationship with God and others the way we crave food and water, Jesus promises something remarkable—we will be satisfied. Join us as we continue learning what it means to live the upside-down life of the Kingdom and become more like Jesus. Blessed Are the Meek
In this episode of Becoming More Like Jesus, we continue our journey through the Beatitudes by exploring Jesus’ words in Gospel of Matthew 5:5: “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” What does it really mean to be meek? And why would the meek inherit the earth? Looking back to Book of Psalms 37 and forward to the promise of restoration in Book of Isaiah 60–61, we see that meekness isn’t weakness—it’s humble trust in God. It’s knowing our place before Him, resisting the pull of pride, and choosing surrender over self-promotion. Through the example of Jesus in Gospel of John 6 and the beautiful humility hymn of Epistle to the Philippians 2, we’re reminded that Christ Himself modeled true meekness—refusing earthly glory in favor of the Father’s will. If you’ve ever wrestled with pride, craved recognition, or struggled to “aim lower,” this episode is for you. Together, we’ll consider practical steps toward humility and what it looks like to inherit the kind of kingdom Jesus promises. Join us as we seek to become more like Jesus—gentle, humble, and confident in the hope of His coming Kingdom.

Blessed Are Those Who Mourn
In this episode of Becoming More Like Jesus, we continue our journey through the Beatitudes by reflecting on Jesus’ words: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). We explore what it truly means to mourn in the way Jesus describes—not only grieving loss, pain, and suffering, but also mourning over sin and the ways our lives fall short of the Kingdom of Heaven. From personal grief to honest repentance, Jesus meets us in our sorrow with His presence, His people, and His hope. Drawing from Scripture, including Romans 5 and Romans 8, we talk about how suffering, when surrendered to God, can be transformed into perseverance, character, and ultimately hope. Mourning in Christ is not despair—it is lamenting with hope, trusting that God is at work even when life is painful. This episode invites you to reflect on your own places of mourning, recognize Jesus as your comforter, and practice a simple breath prayer throughout the week as you hold your grief before Him. Whether you are grieving loss, wrestling with repentance, or simply weary from life, this episode reminds us that we are not alone—and that Jesus promises comfort now and eternal hope in the renewal of Heaven and Earth.
