#259 The Brady Bunch: Family, TV, and Toilets

The Brady Bunch still has the power to send you straight back to childhood—and this time Karin and Michelle are celebrating why it works, what feels weirdly modern, and why this blended-family sitcom became such a permanent piece of pop culture. If you grew up quoting “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia,” loved the fashion, the house, the chaos, or just want a warm nostalgia hit, this one is for you. They get into the show’s biggest quirks and most memorable details, from Carol’s mysteriously undefined life outside the home to the iconic Brady house, the missing toilet, the ever-present Alice, and the strange but lovable rules of ’70s TV. Along the way, they dig into the blended-family dynamic that made the series groundbreaking, the behind-the-scenes choices that shaped the look of the show, and the way Brady Bunch moments still show up everywhere from parody to rap lyrics. You’ll hear them unpack: Why the Brady house felt impossibly huge as a kid How the show handled Carol, Mike, and the kids as a blended family without making it a “stepfamily” story The odd production details that shaped the series, including the bathroom setup and the lack of a toilet Favorite quotes, classic episodes, and why “Pork chops and applesauce” still lives rent-free in their heads The show’s enduring cultural footprint, from Weird Al to the Beastie Boys to Brady parodies They also talk about why the show feels so comforting now: the clothes, the manners, the family rhythm, the square-dancing sincerity, and the kind of wholesome TV that somehow survives decades of reruns. It’s funny, nostalgic, a little snarky, and deeply affectionate—exactly the kind of conversation that makes you want to queue up a classic episode immediately. Perfect for anyone who loves retro TV, ’70s nostalgia, family sitcoms, or just hearing two people lovingly roast and celebrate one of the most recognizable shows ever made.
