Most leaders don't lose people suddenly. They lose them slowly. By the time they realize it, it's too late.
Before They Leave is for leaders whose success depends on people showing up and staying. At work. At home. In life.
I'm Jacq Holland, creator of the 3Rs Crisis™ framework. Thirty years across healthcare, retail, and direct sales taught me one thing.
People don't leave randomly. They fall through gaps. The Expectation Gap. The Motivation Gap. The Communication Gap.
Those gaps are closeable. You just have to see them.
This show helps you see them.
The Chokehold: When the Fear of Losing Someone Changes How You Lead
What happens when you're so afraid of losing someone that you start changing how you lead them?
You know there's a conversation you need to have. You have the authority to have it. But something keeps stopping you.
And here's the question: What is that hesitation costing you?
In this episode of Before They Leave, Jacq Holland explores a leadership pattern that can quietly change how you lead, often before you even recognize it.
Someone may come to mind as you listen.

What If They Need Something You Can't Give? (When the Honest Answer Might Have to Be No)
You finally get the conversation you've been waiting for.
That employee you've been worried about opens up. They tell you what's really going on.
And suddenly, you wish you had an answer.
Because you care. You value them. You don't want to lose them.
But what they're asking for?
You can't give it.
Now you're sitting across from someone you don't want to lose, wondering what to say next.
What does good leadership look like when the answer might have to be no?
In this episode of Before They Leave, Jacq Holland takes us into one of leadership's most uncomfortable conversations.
And the part that matters most might be what happens after the answer.

They Stayed. So Why Doesn’t It Feel Like a Win?
They stayed.
You had the conversation. They decided not to leave. And for a minute, that felt like the answer.
Then a few weeks later, something feels different.
They're still showing up. Still doing the work. But the questions don't come as often. The ideas aren't showing up like they used to.
Season 2 of Before They Leave begins with a question:
They stayed. So why doesn't it feel like a win?
This episode explores the difference between being there and being engaged.
Presence is not participation.
Jacq brings back the Expectation, Motivation, and Communication Gaps from Season 1 as fingerprints, not proof.
You don't know yet.
That's the point.
Your one move tomorrow is simple: notice.
Don't diagnose. Don't fix. Just pay attention to what's different.
Because drift is a warning. It's not a verdict.
Retention can tell you who stayed. It can't tell you who's still with you.
Follow the show so you don't miss where Season 2 goes next.

What Would Change If You Had One More Conversation? (Before silence makes the decision for you)
There's somebody you've been meaning to talk to. You haven't forgotten. You just keep finding reasons why today isn't the day. Maybe things aren't bad enough yet. Maybe you're not sure what to say. Maybe you're a little afraid of what they'll say back. But their name just came to you.
This is the Season 1 finale of Before They Leave. The simplest conversation of the season, and the one built to stay with you the longest.
Jacq walks through why we wait, even when we care, especially when we care. Nothing has happened yet. No resignation, no blow-up, just a little less energy and a shorter answer and a pause that wasn't there before. So we tell ourselves they're probably fine. And probably buys us a lot of time. But the resignation was not the decision. It was the announcement.
The finale reframes what success even means. The goal was never to make everybody stay. Some people should leave. Some seasons end. Having the conversation doesn't guarantee a different ending. What it does is trade assumption for truth, in the space before the announcement, while there may still be time to respond.
You'll leave with one question to sit with, what don't you know yet, and one thing to do this week. Open your calendar, find thirty minutes, and put one name there.
You cannot guarantee they stay. But you can make sure silence isn't the only conversation you had before they left.
Follow the show so you don't miss Season 2. And share this episode with one leader you respect.

You’re Leading Last Year’s Version of Them (What Changed While You Were Still Doing What Always Worked)
You keep doing what always worked. But lately it lands differently, and you can't figure out why.
You may still be leading last year's version of them.
Two people can leave the same meeting and drive home with completely different stories about what just happened. The leader is confused. The employee is tired. Neither one is necessarily wrong.
The agreement may have worked when you made it. Then something changed. Maybe them. Maybe you. Maybe life. But nobody went back to talk about it.
That's where the drift begins.
In this episode, Jacq reveals three quiet signs that an old agreement may no longer fit, how the Expectation and Communication Gaps show up when nobody did anything obviously wrong, and one assumption to notice tomorrow.
A contract doesn't have to be broken to stop working. It just stops matching the people who signed it.

Inspect the Bridge (When the Leader Is the One Drifting)
Nobody inspects the bridge on a good day. It holds, right up until the morning it does not. In this episode of Before They Leave, Jacq Holland turns the camera around and watches the leader, the one who carries the weight so the team never feels it. Gallup found manager engagement has fallen to about one in five, down nine points since 2022. Learn the three fingerprints the drift leaves on a leader, why the weight follows them home, and why a bridge fails from being carried, not from being weak.

The One Who Used to Be All In (The Quiet Cost of Assuming They’re Fine)
There is a person on your team you are not worried about. They still meet every deadline. They still answer every email. But there is less of them showing up. In this episode of Before They Leave, Jacq Holland explores the Motivation Gap, and why people who once gave everything can quietly pull back without anyone noticing. Learn the three fingerprints that reveal the gap, why yesterday's motivators stop fitting today's life, and how to notice the drift while there is still time to move closer. Follow the show so you do not miss the next gap.

The Job You Said Yes To (The One You Never Actually Got)
You said yes to one job. Somewhere along the way, you started doing a different one, and nobody told you it changed.
In Episode 3 of Before They Leave, Jacq Holland opens the first of the three gaps. The Expectation Gap. The distance between what someone was promised on the day they said yes, and what the job actually became.
This is the quietest of the three gaps, because it hides inside good intentions. Nobody lied. The promise just softened. A priority changed. A someday kept sliding. And one ordinary day, the person you hired stops trying to close the distancebetween the job they were promised and the job they got. That is the day the drift begins.
Jacq walks through the pattern she has watched for years, then names the three quiet fingerprints that show the gap is open. The questions stop. The past tense arrives. The yes shrinks. None of them are loud. Every one of them is theExpectation Gap, opening in plain sight. Because it isnot the shift that tells the story. It is the drift. Every visible departure begins with an invisible one, and the leaving does not start on the last day. It starts on the first day the promise and the reality stop matching. The episode ends with one question you can ask tomorrow about one person you hired, and the reminder that the gap was never the real problem. The silence around it was.

The Conversation You Were Never In (The One That Happens Before Someone Quits)
The resignation was not the first conversation. It was the last one. The first one happened weeks earlier, inside someone's head, and you were not in the room. In Episode 2 of Before They Leave, Jacq Holland goes inside the silent conversation that happens before someone quits. Gallup found 42% of people who leave say it could have been prevented, and 45% had no real conversation about their future in the months before they left. Learn the four quiet signals of the drift, and the one you will likely misread as good news. Free Diagnostic at impactbyjacq.com.

Ghosting Is a Symptom (Why the Silence Hurts More Than a No)
You can handle a no. A no gives you an answer. But ghosting? Your brain does not know what to do with silence, so it keeps replaying the story. Research HBR has cited shows social rejection lights up some of the same brain regions as physical pain. The pain was real. This episode names the four situations that produce ghosting and reframes it entirely. Ghosting is not what they did to you. It is what they could not say to you. What Quiet Quitting Is Actually Telling You (The Three Stages of the Conversation Nobody Is Having Out Loud)
You have an opinion about quiet quitting. Maybe lazy.Maybe healthy. Maybe just a TikTok phrase. The last one is closest to true, but not the way you think. Gallup has measured this for decades. In its 2026 report, about 64% of workers are not engaged and another 16% are actively disengaged. Nearly four in five. Quiet quitting is not a trend. It is the baseline. This episode names the three stages it moves through, and how each one is reversible if you have the right conversation in time. Free Diagnostic at impactbyjacq.com.
