09-11-2026 - Anthropic, Yemen, and the Saudi oil shock
Concerns from Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon and alignment lead Evan Hubinger about the possibility of advanced AI becoming uncontrollable, Anthropic’s disclosure that a northern Yemen weapons cell used Claude for months to develop missile-related software, and escalating attacks by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia that affected energy infrastructure and the East–West Pipeline. It emphasizes that Anthropic did not identify the cell as the Houthis or claim Claude controlled any operational weapons, while reporting that the AI assisted with guidance, navigation, control software, simulations, and debugging.
At the same time, attacks around Saudi Arabia and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait added pressure to an already-disrupted oil market, with Brent rising above $107, WTI above $102, and U.S. diesel reaching a record national average of about $6.06 per gallon. The broader argument is that AI capabilities, geopolitical conflict, and energy disruptions are converging at the same time, with the immediate economic effects of the oil crisis potentially reaching consumers through transportation, freight, agriculture, and other diesel-dependent industries.

09-14-2026 - Saudi Arabia, Iran, & Skyrocketing Oil
Disruptions to oil transport, including damage to Saudi Arabia’s East–West pipeline and Houthi control of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, are putting additional pressure on global oil supplies, while domestic U.S. diesel, jet fuel, and lubricant prices are also being affected by refinery outages and constrained supplies. It then shifts to AI, describing debate among major AI companies and policymakers over whether frontier development should be slowed, alongside tensions involving China and the Pentagon’s decision regarding Anthropic. Finally, it covers several U.S. political and election-related disputes, including litigation over new USPS mail-ballot rules and allegations from a whistleblower, relayed by Sen. Alex Padilla, concerning a DHS voter-fraud investigation; the passage presents these developments as interconnected signs of heightened economic, technological, geopolitical, and domestic political pressure.
Iran reportedly shifting to a “fully offensive” posture and warning of military action if its demands—including an end to the naval blockade and a permanent Hormuz agreement—aren’t met within weeks. The Strait of Hormuz remains severely restricted, while Gulf allies are increasingly frustrated with Washington and U.S. weapons stockpiles are reportedly being depleted after months of fighting. The prolonged deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln, with sailors reporting severe exhaustion and deteriorating conditions, has also become a major political and military controversy. Domestically, another major story is scrutiny of Trump’s growing financial ties to World Liberty Financial, after regulators approved a bank charter for the Trump family-linked company to issue its stablecoin, raising accusations of presidential conflicts of interest.
