Why Leaving an Abusive Relationship Is Harder Than You Think
It’s one of the most common and misunderstood questions asked of survivors of domestic violence. But the answer is far more complicated than many people realize. In this powerful episode of Behind the Bruises, host Candy Morrow sits down with psychiatrist Dr. Angie Arnold to unpack the psychology behind abusive relationships, exploring how love bombing, trauma bonding, emotional manipulation, and the brain’s response to intense affection can create powerful emotional attachments that are difficult to break. From the overwhelming attention and affection at the start of a relationship to the confusion, self-doubt, and emotional turmoil that can follow, Dr. Arnold explains how manipulative patterns can gradually change how someone thinks, feels, and responds. This conversation challenges the question, “Why didn’t she just leave?” and it encourages us to ask something more important: What makes leaving so difficult, and how can we better understand and support survivors? Whether you're a survivor, someone supporting a loved one, or simply seeking to better understand the realities of domestic violence, this is a conversation you don't want to miss.

The Courage to Heal Where It Hurts Most
In this episode of Behind the Bruises, I’m joined by Dr. Kristin Boehm, a double board-certified plastic surgeon in Atlanta, for a conversation about transformation beyond the surface. As a surgeon, Dr. Boehm understands transformation as more than aesthetics-it’s the process of taking what was broken, scarred, or hidden and reshaping it into something strong, whole, and visible once more. Together we explore reconstruction and renewal through a deeply human lens—how healing is not only physical, but emotional, and how honoring the story behind the scars is essential to true restoration. This episode offers insight, compassion, and a powerful reminder that healing can take many forms. Because YOU MATTER.
