Behind The Labs - Episode 63 - Cancer Cells Mechanism, Blood Thinners Alleviating Cognitive Decline, and the Inflammation-Hypothalamus Axis
For another Behind the Labs episode, we talked about five studies exploring some pretty unexpected connections in biology—from how cells survive severe tissue damage and how that could relate to cancer treatment resistance, to whether blood thinners might also influence cognitive decline in people with Alzheimer’s and AFib. We also looked at major molecular changes happening in the aging brain during midlife, how a protein called Menin in the hypothalamus may influence aging throughout the body, and how accelerated biological aging in younger generations is associated with a higher risk of early-onset cancer.

Behind The Labs - Episode 62 - Ozempic Prevents Asthma, Caffeine as an Anti-Aging Compound, and
The five studies explored how everyday substances, medications, and biological targets can have unexpected effects on human health. They looked at caffeine and cellular aging, sugary drinks and gastric cancer, semaglutide and respiratory disease, GPR133 and osteoporosis, and a DNA-based treatment for high cholesterol. Although the topics are different, each study identified a biological mechanism that could potentially be used to improve health or better understand disease.
Together, the studies also show the importance of distinguishing promising research from proven medical treatments. Several findings came from animal models or observational data, meaning they provide important clues but do not establish cause and effect or guarantee that the same results will occur in humans. Overall, the research highlights how understanding cellular pathways can reveal unexpected connections between common exposures, medications, and disease.
Overall, we found the following:
☕ Caffeine: May activate AMPK, a cellular pathway involved in energy balance, stress responses, and aging.
🥤 Sugary drinks: Daily consumption was associated with a substantially higher risk of gastric cancer, although causation remains unproven.
💉 Semaglutide: Was associated with nearly 40% fewer asthma attacks, suggesting possible benefits beyond diabetes and weight loss.
🦴 GPR133: Activating this receptor with AP503 strengthened bones in mice and could represent a future osteoporosis treatment target.
🧬 PCSK9 DNA therapy: A single injection reduced cholesterol by 47% in mice, showing potential for a new gene-targeting approach to cholesterol treatment.

Behind The Labs - Episode 61 - Nanoparticles Fighting Cancer, New Compound Burning Fat But Keeping Muscle, and Childhood Trauma can Leave a Scar In Your Brain?
Today on Behind The Labs, we're diving into four stories reshaping how we think about the body and brain. First, we're debunking a 50-year-old myth: Linus Pauling's vitamin C megadose theory doesn't hold up against modern meta-analyses, which show at best a modest reduction in severe cold symptoms — not prevention. Then, we head into the operating room, where a new "double-punch" nanoparticle platform is helping surgeons see and destroy glioblastoma cells beyond what the eye or scalpel can reach, producing 100% survival in treated mice. From there, we trace how childhood trauma physically reshapes the brain — researchers have identified an enzyme, SETD7, that leaves a molecular "scar" on DNA packaging, priming stress genes to fire more easily decades later, and remarkably, they were able to block it. We'll also unpack a compound called TOFA that helps the body burn fat and preserve muscle simultaneously, offering a promising complement to GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic. And finally, we ask: could learning a new language be the secret to a younger brain? New research suggests multilingual speakers may have brains up to 13 years younger than their monolingual peers. Four studies, one throughline: the brain and body are far more malleable — and far more responsive to what we do to them — than we often assume.
