A West Point Insight: Navigating Through Separation
In this episode of Behind the Long Gray Line, host talks with Tracey Perez Kohlmoos, head administrator of the West Point Moms Facebook group and a parent of a former cadet who experienced academic separation with readmission, to explain what “separation” can look like for cadets and why families often don't have clear information. They discuss academic separations (including GPA standards in the Red Book), academic boards and possible outcomes such as six-month or one-year turnbacks, and how physical requirements like the IOCT or survival swimming are graded and can lead to academic board review. They outline the typical 4–6 week out-processing timeline, logistics like exams and clearing the Army, and the complex readmission process, including retesting, reapplying, and immediately passing a fitness test upon return. They also address honor boards, the Army Mentorship Program, the emotional toll on cadets and parents, and the importance of family support and community.

A West Point Insight: Demystifying the Application Process
Service Academy & ROTC Applications: Deadlines, Myths, Medical Hurdles, and What Really Matters
Sarah interviews independent educational consultant and West Point field force representative Jennifer Djavadi about navigating service academy and ROTC applications. They emphasize starting preparation as early as 8th–9th grade by taking rigorous classes, developing authentic leadership, and building resilience, while warning against myths about needing military connections. A major theme is precision and calendaring hard deadlines for nominations and applications, since DoDMERB medical reviews can create time crunches; medical disqualifications may be waived or stem from errors that must be corrected and extra documents may need to be provided. They discuss summer seminars as helpful but not weighted like Boys State, the value of finishing applications early due to rolling admissions. They discuss the importance of researching careers and branch culture rather than choosing an academy for prestige or “free” education. They also cover reapplying, prep options, limits around IEP/504 accommodations, interview attire and preparation, and how field force liaisons support candidates.
This episode is great for new applicants, siblings of applicants and those who want to share with family and friends all that goes into the application to West Point and other service academies.

West Point Milestones: Family Weekend
The podcast explains West Point’s Family Weekend and how it differs from Plebe Parent Weekend. Family Weekend, a newer fall event often tied to a football weekend, is open to anyone (parents, relatives, friends) and available all four years, and it’s one of the few chances to see cadet areas like the barracks. The hosts discuss how much time families get with cadets, how class privileges and good standing affect walking and overnight passes, and why Friday is the main day for tours, briefings, class visits, library and supply (WB4) tours, and barracks room visits. Saturday includes a parade, football game, and tailgates, and Sunday may offer brunch, chapel, and boat rides. They also note ticketing, clear-bag rules, and the possibility of a spirit pass after a win.

From Homeschool to Academy: A Cadet Mother's Reflection
In this episode of Behind the Long Gray Line, Sarah interviews a military spouse of 23 years and mom of five who homeschooled all her kids, including two who have attended West Point (one a 2026 graduate, one currently there). Sarah’s guest explains how her husband’s West Point background influenced their children, why they chose homeschooling due to frequent moves, and how they handled the service academy application “box checking,” including outsourcing core high school classes to secure teacher recommendations, building leadership and extracurriculars through options like Eagle Scouts and Civil Air Patrol, prioritizing SAT/ACT scores without class rank, and maintaining fitness for the CFA. They discuss NCAA eligibility paperwork for homeschoolers, adjusting to West Point academics and schedule, the emotional challenges of R-Day/A-Day and later goodbyes, branching surprises, and advice to avoid comparing cadet journeys while staying supportive.

Realizing Grit: A Cadet Mother's Reflection
During this interview, a parent shares how her son knew early he was going to West Point, despite not coming from a military family, after hearing a field force representative and valuing the academy’s structure, mission, and camaraderie. She describes preparing through parent clubs, Zoom FAQs, and advice from a West Point mom, and recounts a different 2021 R-Day experience and the difficulty of limited contact during Beast, highlighted by the mid-summer phone call and March Back. The conversation covers her son handling club tryout rejections, finding a fit with Sandhurst and Black and Gold, later serving as company commander, never doubting West Point, branching Infantry, and the harder transition from cadet “bubble” to big Army. Key advice: get involved, ask questions, support other cadets, and attend events when possible.
