BEHIND THE NUMBER

About BEHIND THE NUMBER

BEHIND THE NUMBER is an ongoing English-language slow-burn psychological audio mystery from Finland. Ordinary places begin to feel unfamiliar as times, numbers, fragments of conversation, silence and recurring sounds form a larger pattern. Told through short cinematic chapters, the story leaves room for each listener’s own interpretation. Created and produced independently by Aaro Luukinen for Lähtökohta Podcast. AI-assisted writing and synthetic voices are used intentionally. Headphones recommended.

BEHIND THE NUMBER — Episode 15: THE VERSION

An open window. Birds outside. Four people in the same room. They should all remember what happened. But they don't. Buzz remembers one version. Anna remembers another. Erik heard something he refuses to repeat. And Sheila remembers details from a recording she was never there to hear. A chair has moved. A window was open — or maybe it wasn't. Someone stopped the tape. Someone else remembers it never stopping. Then they record the recording. And something appears that none of them heard in the room. Maybe memory isn't preserving the story. Maybe it's writing it. And if four people remember four different versions... what makes the fifth? BEHIND THE NUMBER — Episode 14: THE RECORDING

A sunny day. An open window. Birds outside. For once, nothing seems to be happening. Then Buzz finds an old cassette. Recorded in October 1998, it should contain nothing more than an ordinary receiver test. But when the tape begins to play, Erik, Anna and Buzz may not be hearing the same recording. A voice says something that should not be there. A date begins to matter. And the more they listen, the less certain they become about whether the message exists on the tape at all — or somewhere else entirely. Maybe the signal isn't moving. Maybe they are. BEHIND THE NUMBER — Before You Begin

What is BEHIND THE NUMBER? It began with a number. Then came the signals, recordings, memories, coincidences — and the uncomfortable possibility that the observer may be part of what is being observed. BEHIND THE NUMBER is an independent English-language psychological audio mystery series created by Finnish creator Aaro Luukinen. It is a story about perception, memory, patterns, coincidence and our need to find meaning in the things around us. Sometimes the mystery is in what happens. Sometimes it is in what doesn’t. And sometimes it may exist only because someone was listening. This introduction presents the series, its creator and the ideas behind the production. Story, concept, writing, direction, editing and sound design: Aaro Luukinen. AI-assisted tools are used as part of the production process, including synthetic voice, visual and music-generation tools. Final creative decisions are made by the creator. BEHIND THE NUMBER — Episode 13: The Constant

Season 2 — Episode 3 Seventeen keeps returning. 2:17. 4:38. 13:17. At Buzz’s cabin, Erik tries to hold on to the simplest explanation: numbers are just numbers. Patterns are something people create when they look long enough. But the problem is no longer only what they see. It is what they remember. What they expect. And what begins to feel personal. Outside, Erik walks alone through the wet forest, trying to find five minutes where nothing means anything. Instead, he finds another number waiting for him. Then a message appears: WHO YOU ARE Is it a question? A statement? Or something meant for whoever happens to read it? And when an old piece of paper points toward tomorrow, the line between coincidence and pattern becomes harder to see. Episode 13 moves deeper into Erik’s point of view — not into panic, but into the quieter fear of no longer knowing whether you are discovering a pattern or building one yourself. End song: OUTSIDE A low, weathered spoken-sung reflection that continues Erik’s thoughts beyond the dialogue: waiting, counting, remembering, and the feeling that ordinary things may no longer be ordinary. BEHIND THE NUMBER — Episode 12: The Other Signal

Season 2 — Episode 2 The signal has changed. At Buzz’s place, an ordinary phone lights up with a familiar number: 17. But the people in the room do not remember the moment in the same way. A message appears. Then it is gone. A clock shows 2:17 — or perhaps it doesn’t. Back at the station café, Sheila finds something that should already be somewhere else. And when the old radio comes alive again, the question is no longer simply where the signal is coming from. It is where it ends. Memory is not a recording. Perception is not agreement. And sometimes the most unsettling question is not what you heard — but whether you remember hearing it at all. Nordic Melancholy Featured within the episode. Where the Signal Ends End song. BEHIND THE NUMBER — Episode 11: The Frequency

Season 2 — Episode 1 Season Two begins with a signal. A voice emerges from the static of an old radio. Numbers follow. 649 283 051. Erik and Anna return to the station café. Sheila has heard the transmission. Buzz has written it down. Seventeen was already part of the mystery. So was 4:38. Now there may be something else. Buzz takes Erik and Anna away from the station in his old black Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL, to a place filled with analogue receivers, amplifiers, tapes and machines built to listen across great distances. And there, through a receiver far from the station, they hear something impossible. Platform Three. The question is no longer only what the numbers mean. It is where the signal is coming from — and whether they found it at all. Behind the Number — Episode 10: Someone Else’s Table

The café is quieter now. Two cups are cleared from Table Six. A photograph is found beneath the table. And someone new walks in from the rain. Numbers are useful. They tell us where to sit, when to leave, which train to take. People are different. We use faces. But what happens when the face you remember isn't the face someone else sees? The café feels familiar. Maybe too familiar. A radio plays quietly in the background. Coffee is served. A train announcement drifts in from the station. Two people sit at a table, trying to remember what happened — and discovering that their memories no longer quite agree. Small things begin to matter. A time. A receipt. A pack of cigarettes. Something missing. And a barista who seems to know more than she should.
