S4 Ep 2 - Behind the Scenes: Generative AI in Higher Ed - From the Black Box to the Classroom, Teaching With Generative AI Responsibly
Dr. Vanessa D'Amario came to generative AI from physics and computational math, and her concern as a teacher is that students keep doing the thinking themselves. In her view, the discipline to avoid outsourcing that thinking to a machine is now one of the most important things we can ask of them.
In this episode of Season 4 of Behind the Scenes: How Faculty Bring Learning to Life at NSU, which explores how generative AI is changing higher education in practical, ethical, and uniquely human ways, host Dr. Marti Snyder talks with Dr. D'Amario, Assistant Professor in the Department of Decision Sciences at the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship and one of 25 faculty in the inaugural cohort of the NSF NAIRR AI Education Fellowship. Dr. D'Amario shares how she has given students hands-on experience with generative AI, including a literature review project using open models and a business course where students explore data in SQL notebooks. She also explains why she is rethinking assessments, including presentations and real business problems students care about, and how she stays current by setting aside 30 minutes a day for research and reading. This conversation is a good fit for faculty who are still working out where generative AI belongs in their teaching, their scholarship, or their professional practice.

S4 Ep 1 - Behind the Scenes: Generative AI in Higher Ed - Generative AI in the Classroom: Lessons from the Law School Front Lines
For most of Professor Jon M. Garon's teaching career, technology literature assumed faculty would get the powerful new tools first. Generative AI flipped that model. Students got there before their professors did.
In Season 4 of Behind the Scenes: How Faculty Bring Learning to Life at NSU, the focus is how generative AI is changing higher education in practical, ethical, and uniquely human ways. Host Dr. Marti Snyder sits down with Jon M. Garon, Associate Dean for Technology and Innovation and Director of the Goodwin Program for Society, Technology, and the Law at the Shepard Broad College of Law, to talk about what it takes to bring AI into the classroom responsibly. The two discuss how the Shepard Broad College of Law trains faculty and students through webinars and orientation sessions, why closed book exams and active learning exercises still matter, documented bias in how AI tools respond to student work based on perceived race and gender, and practical strategies like framing prompts as an opposing party to counter AI sycophancy. This conversation offers faculty across every discipline a grounded, specific look at how to bring generative AI into their courses without losing sight of what students are there to learn.

S3 Ep 8 - Behind the Scenes: Community in Action - From Program Evaluation to Purpose
A tenured professor who left her position because she felt she didn't have enough applied experience to teach it well. That's part of what shapes how Dr. Moya Alfonso approaches community-engaged research today.
In Season 3 of Behind the Scenes: How Faculty Bring Learning to Life at NSU, the focus is Community in Action: How NSU Faculty Serve, Partner, and Make an Impact. Host Dr. Marti Snyder talks with Dr. Moya Alfonso, Program Director and Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences, Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine, about the winding path that brought her from public health research to nonprofit leadership to NSU. Dr. Alfonso discusses her service-learning course model, including a program evaluation project with Hands of Esperanza that the nonprofit now uses in its own annual reporting, and her current AcademyHealth fellowship work on maternal mental health and substance use in rural Georgia. She reflects on what sustains a community partnership over time and why she believes humility is central to doing this work well. It's a candid conversation for anyone thinking about how to build coursework around genuine community partnership.
