Ep. 13: Nico & Moselle's origin stories
After 12 episodes of sharing our thoughts on bellydance, we figured it was probably time to tell you a little more about who we are—and how we ended up here. In this episode, we’re going back to the beginning: how we each found bellydance, when it became something more than a hobby, and the unexpected experiences that shaped our paths along the way. From early performances and professional gigs to travel, questionable decisions, major turning points, and even an attempted move to Morocco, neither of our journeys has exactly followed a straight line. We also talk about how our paths eventually crossed, how we became friends and collaborators, and how that ultimately led to SAMAR and Bellydance, Unfiltered. We want to hear from you: What’s your bellydance origin story? How did you find this dance, and what made you stick with it? Let us know!

Ep. 12: Choreography, improvisation, & Bellydance
In this episode of Bellydance, Unfiltered, we’re joined by Melissa Gamal and Hala Jamal for a conversation about choreography, improvisation, and the relationship between the two in raqs sharqi. Raqs sharqi comes from a culture where dance is deeply connected to social and improvisational traditions—yet choreography has become an important part of how many of us learn, teach, and perform the dance today. We talk about what choreography can give us as dancers: new movement patterns and transitions, deeper familiarity with music, technical challenges, memory and mental training, and the opportunity to experience someone else’s interpretation of a song. We also explore what can happen when choreography becomes a security blanket—and why developing the ability to improvise is such an important part of becoming a well-rounded raqs sharqi dancer. Along the way, we discuss the difference between remembering steps and truly embodying them, learning to trust yourself when you don’t know exactly what comes next, and how choreography and improvisation can ultimately support rather than oppose one another. Your challenge: Take a look at your own dance practice right now. Are you spending most of your time learning and practicing choreography, or are you primarily improvising? Whatever your answer is, intentionally spend some time working on the other side. If you’ve been living in choreography, put on some music and improvise. If you always improvise, challenge yourself to learn or work with choreography—and see what it teaches you. Ep. 11: The Business of Belly Dance
Being a professional bellydancer takes more than being a great dancer. Behind every booking is a business — and understanding that business can make the difference between simply getting gigs and building a sustainable professional career. In this episode, we talk about the realities of treating bellydance as a business: understanding your local market, setting your rates, finding the clients who are actually willing to pay them, and making strategic decisions about where and how you perform. We also get into the less glamorous work behind the scenes — marketing, client communication, building relationships, and learning through experience what actually works. In this episode, we get into: What actually makes a bellydance business sustainable The realities of pricing yourself in your local market Why getting more gigs isn’t necessarily the same as building a successful business Some of the mistakes dancers make when trying to turn their art into a profession What we’ve learned from years of navigating the business side of bellydance ourselves If you’ve ever wondered how dancers go from performing occasionally to actually building a professional dance business, this episode gets into the side of the industry we don’t always talk about. We want to hear from you: What’s one thing you wish someone had taught you about the business side of bellydance before you started performing professionally?

Ep. 10: Building Belly dance Community in a Small Scene
What does it take to build a thriving bellydance community when there are only a handful of dancers around? In this episode, we’re joined by special guest Hala Jamal to talk about the joys and challenges of growing dance communities outside of major cultural hubs. From very small towns to bigger hubs—we explore what helps a community flourish, what can quietly hold it back, and why meaningful connection doesn’t depend on the size of your city. We share stories from our own experiences organizing classes, performances, and events, and discuss the importance of consistency, collaboration, welcoming newcomers, and creating opportunities where none seem to exist. Whether you’re part of a bustling scene or feel like you’re dancing on your own, this conversation is full of ideas and encouragement for anyone who wants to strengthen the community around them. Your turn: What’s one thing that’s helped your local bellydance community grow—or what’s one thing you wish your community had? We’d love to hear from you. Ep. 9: Why Arabic music matters
What role does Arabic music play in becoming a better belly dancer? In this episode, we explore why developing a relationship with Arabic music is one of the most valuable investments a dancer can make. We discuss why the music can feel intimidating at first, how our own relationship with it has evolved over the years, and the profound lessons we’ve learned from dancing with live musicians. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or you’ve been dancing for years, this conversation is an invitation to move beyond hearing the music as a backdrop and begin listening to it as an art form in its own right. In this episode, we discuss: Why Arabic music is essential to the art of raqs sharqi Why dancers can find Arabic music intimidating How our relationship with the music has changed over time What we’ve learned from dancing with live musicians The connection between music, culture, and authentic artistic expression How dancers can begin building a deeper relationship with Arabic music Your turn: What’s one Arabic song, singer, or musician that made you fall in love with Arabic music?

What does it mean to be a good member of the bellydance community? In this episode, we explore the unwritten rules that help build a healthy, respectful, and professional dance culture. From business ethics and creative integrity to supporting one another and keeping our egos in check, we’re talking about the behaviours that strengthen our community—and the ones that can quietly undermine it. Whether you’re a student, performer, or teacher, this conversation is an invitation to reflect on the role each of us plays in creating the kind of dance community we want to be part of. In this episode, we discuss: Respecting other dancers’ businesses and opportunities. Creative integrity and intellectual property. Professionalism on and off the stage. Ep 5: What is SAMAR? An improvised raqs sharqi experience
Ep. 5: What is SAMAR? An Improvised Raqs Sharqi Experience “So… I have an idea.” In this episode, we pull back the curtain on how SAMAR came to be—and what it’s evolving into. We talk about the early conversations that sparked the project, how we approach selecting music, and why improvisation in Raqs Sharqi felt like something the community was missing. At its core, SAMAR is about creating space for live music, connection, and a different kind of bellydance experience—one that feels a little more raw, a little more spontaneous, and very alive. We’re also excited to share that Melissa Gamal is coming to town for SAMAR Presents in August! We talk about what’s coming up, the workshops she’ll be teaching, and why we’re so excited to bring her here. CTA: Your Turn SEEK OUT LIVE MUSIC! Follow the Canadian Arabic Orchestra. Ep 4: The Hobbyist Bellydancer vs The Pro Bellydancer #whereamiat
Ep. 4: The Hobbyist Bellydancer vs. the Pro Bellydancer Should you keep bellydance as a hobby...or is it time to go pro?In this episode, we unpack the differences between hobbyist and professional dancers—and why neither path is "better" than the other. Bellydance is meant to be enjoyed, whether you're dancing for yourself, your community, or your career. We also tackle the big questions: I want to be a professional...what do I do? Am I ready? We talk about the benchmarks that matter, what being a professional actually looks like, and why there's room for everyone in this art form. One thing we know for sure? If the world was ending...we'd still be dancing. CTA: Your Turn Take an honest look at your own dance journey. Are you dancing for joy? For connection? For performance? For a career? There's no wrong answer—but knowing your "why" can help you make better decisions about where to invest your time and energy .After you've done your self-analysis, come tell us: Are you a hobbyist, an aspiring professional, or somewhere in between? We'd love to hear your perspective.

Ep 3: The Mindset that supports becoming a better Belly Dancer
Ep. 3: The Mindset That Supports Becoming a Better Belly dancer "How do I get better?" It's one of the most common questions in bellydance, and in this episode, we explore an answer that has nothing to do with learning the next combo or buying a prettier costume. We talk about the mindset that supports long-term growth: learning to enjoy the process, embracing the inevitable boring bits, and staying fascinated with learning even when progress feels slow. Bellydance rewards consistency more than talent. One of us shares what it was like to spend nearly 20 years before finally feeling like the hard work was paying off in the way she'd always hoped. Spoiler alert: growth takes time, and the dancers who stick with it are often the ones who learn to love the journey—not just the destination. If you've ever felt impatient, stuck, or wondered whether you're making progress at all, this episode is for you. We'd love to hear your thoughts and continue the conversation. Listen. 💬 Join the conversation. 💃 Go dance.
