   Citizens Together | Philippians 1:27–30

Title: Citizens Together --- 0:00 What It Means to Be a Citizen 1:32 Scripture Reading 3:12 Paul's Charge to the Philippians 4:53 Jesus Is King in Every Part of Life 8:49 Philippi and Our Heavenly Citizenship 14:14 The Church as a Colony of Heaven 20:47 Living Worthy of the Gospel 22:38 Confident Unity Despite Opposition 28:04  Striving Together Through Difficulties 34:42 Fearless Rest in the Gospel 39:36 Living Out Our Citizenship 41:20 Reflection and Prayer --- Philippians 1:27–30 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. (ESV) --- In Philippians 1:27–30, Paul calls believers to live as citizens of heaven, with their allegiance to Jesus shaping every part of life. In "Citizens Together," Jed Gillis explains that living worthy of the gospel doesn't mean earning God's favor. It means displaying the worth of Christ through the way we live. As a community of heavenly citizens, the church is called to reflect its King through sacrificial love, grace, and unity. This means standing firm together in the face of opposition, actively helping one another through life's struggles, and resting without fear in the gospel. Even in suffering, we can live with confidence because God is faithful to finish the work he has begun. --- Berean Bible Church is a non-denominational church in East Knoxville, TN. By Life or Death | Philippians 1:18–26

Title: By Life or Death --- 0:00 What Is the Good Life? 2:04 Philippians 1:18-26 3:45 I Will Rejoice 8:20 The Spirit and Our Prayers 14:48 Honor Christ in Your Body 23:12 To Live Is Christ 29:20 To Die Is Gain 30:56 Fruitful Labor for Others 36:28 Whether by Life or Death 41:40 Growing in Allegiance to Christ 43:11 Prayer and Reflection --- Philippians 1:18–26 Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. (ESV) --- Writing from prison, Paul declares that he will rejoice because his hope rests not in his circumstances but in the certainty of his salvation through Christ. He is confident that Christ will be honored in his body, whether he lives or dies. For Paul, “to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Life means fruitful labor for the spiritual growth and joy of others, while death means being with Christ, which is far better. In this sermon, Jed Gillis challenges us to reconsider what makes life good. Rather than organizing our lives around comfort, success, or security, we are called to treasure Christ above all else and live in joyful allegiance to Him, trusting that He will be honored in every circumstance. --- Berean Bible Church is a non-denominational church in East Knoxville, TN. Christ's Glory over My Reputation 30:32 - Rivalry, Tribes, and Selfish Ambition 35:13 - Rejoicing When Christ Is Proclaimed 37:54 - Allegiance beyond Defensiveness and Hurt 40:19 - Conclusion: Three Tests of Allegiance 42:27 - Personal Response --- Philippians 1:12–18 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice. (ESV) --- In “When Christ Reigns,” Jed Gillis examines Philippians 1:12–18 to show how allegiance to Jesus transforms our priorities. Paul’s response to imprisonment and opposition demonstrates that the advance of the gospel matters more than personal comfort, the spiritual growth of fellow believers matters more than personal freedom, and Christ’s glory matters more than reputation or recognition. As the gospel changes us, it produces peace, love, and courage that strengthen our witness to others. Even circumstances we would never choose can become opportunities for ministry. Paul’s joy in Christ being proclaimed—even by those seeking to hurt him—challenges believers to surrender selfish ambition and defensiveness, treasure Jesus above themselves, and find joy in the work of their King. --- Berean Bible Church is a non-denominational church in East Knoxville, TN.
