It’s the club none of us want to be members of, but here we are. This podcast is for all of us, to share and celebrate the stories of our children, and offer support to each other. We'll explore topics relevant to us as we navigate the world as bereaved parents. Whether your loss was last week, last month, last year or even last century, you're welcome here. And whether your child was a baby, a youngster, a teenager, an adult, or even a parent themselves, you're welcome here.
We speak with Emma, mother of Ruby, about Ruby’s life and the events that led to her death at age 18. After developing symptoms in 2019, Ruby was diagnosed with an aggressive form of T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Her treatment included a stem cell transplant, but the cancer returned, and she died at home in May 2020.
We discuss Ruby’s wish for more cancer research and how her family has raised money in her memory. They set a fundraising target of £500,000, roughly the amount spent on Ruby’s treatment, and directed donations through a dedicated fund for research into her type of cancer. The fund has supported projects at Newcastle University and contributed to four further research projects. They have set up Live Kindly Live Loudly which was Ruby’s motto in her memory.
Emma describes the family’s Tube Challenge, chosen because Ruby was born in London, loved the Underground and had considered working for Transport for London. Emma and Ruby’s sister Tabitha first attempted the challenge in 2021, when COVID restrictions and station closures prevented them from completing the full route. For the new attempt, 24 people planned to travel across the network on Friday 30th October including Tracy from the Bereaved Parents Club, starting at 5:22 a.m. and aiming to reach Heathrow by midnight. The group expected to split into smaller teams and adapt the route if delays or closures arise.
We discuss the tube challenge as a way to remember and celebrate Ruby, as well as raise money. The team had already raised more than £15,000, and Emma hoped the day would bring people together and give them a chance to share stories.
You can follow our progress on Friday 30th October on either the Bereaved Parents Club social media accounts or LiveKindlyLiveLoudly instagram account.
Please look out for part 2 of this episode in which we will record a post event to chat about the day and all the stories and memories made to celebrate Ruby.

#27 Raj's Story - Baby Loss Awareness Week 2026
In this episode, we speak with Dad Raj about the loss of his baby son Riaan and the long search for answers after his death at seven months old. He shares the medical issues Riaan faced, the events of the night he died, and the recent understanding that Riaan had a very rare genetic condition.
Raj shares how he started Sands United FC Nottingham to provide support for other dads who have lost a baby. Raj explains the purpose of the charity he set up with his wife Sharan in honour of their son Riaan Remembers and how the charity supports bereaved families and provides training to NHS staff to better support parents in baby loss. In Raj’s role as a trustee he recently delivered a letter to Downing Street to call for action to improve the racial inequality in baby loss.
Raj talks about the football sessions, peer support for bereaved dads and how often the dads are overlooked and we need to be more open in conversation to better support Dad’s as well as the Mums in baby loss.

#26 Ellie's Gift
In this podcast episode we speak with Lucy from Ellie’s Gift about how the service began after the loss of her baby daughter Ellie and how that experience shaped support for families facing baby loss. Lucy talks about Ellie’s birth plan and their hypnobirthing approach, which helped create a calm delivery and a precious chance to say hello and goodbye.
Lucy explains how she later trained as a hypnobirthing teacher and adapted those ideas into Ellie’s Gift, a free app used in the NHS and internationally, with resources such as audio tracks, journaling, yoga and aftercare support. We also cover the organisation’s work for families experiencing TFMR (Termination For Medical Reasons), its mindfulness and grief course, the companion book, and the importance of language, collaboration and support during pregnancy after loss.
Lucy Livesey, Ellie’s Gift, baby loss, support, birth plan, hypnobirthing, NHS app, grief, TFMR, stillbirth, miscarriage and mindfulness
