Better Together helps listeners understand how local partnerships and prevention efforts impact daily life. It gives a voice to those shaping real change and invites everyone to be part of the solution. Every episode will not only have facts, and information, but will also have actionable steps to conclude the episode so listeners can do something with what they just learned.

Prevention Starts with Awareness
Today's guests are Riley Kavanagh and Emily Provencher from New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence (NHCADSV), and Morgan Browne and Bridget Lyle from New Beginnings. In this episode of Better Together, we explore the importance of preventing domestic and sexual violence and the role education, awareness, and community support play in creating safer environments for everyone. We discuss how prevention efforts can reach people of all ages, from young children in school settings to adults in their homes and communities. Together, we take a closer look at how early education can help children recognize healthy relationships, understand boundaries, and develop the tools to build safe and respectful connections. We also discuss how adults, families, schools, and community organizations can help raise awareness, recognize warning signs, challenge harmful behaviors, and create spaces where people feel supported and heard. Prevention starts with conversations, education, and a willingness to take action. Whether it’s learning how to talk about healthy relationships at home, supporting prevention programs in schools, or connecting with local resources, there are meaningful steps we can all take to help prevent domestic and sexual violence. Tune in to learn how individuals and communities can work together to build a culture of safety, respect, and support. The Options in a SANE Exam
Today's guests are Sarah Stone of Concord Hospital, and Meg Jenks of the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. In this episode of Better Together, we sit down with our guests to talk about SANE exams: what a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner exam actually is, what happens during one, and how hospitals and advocates work together to support survivors through the process. They also get into the myths that keep people from seeking care, the challenges of making SANE services accessible across a rural state, and what survivors and their loved ones should know about the support available to them. If you want to understand what a SANE exam involves, care about how survivors are supported in the hours after an assault, or want to know how healthcare and advocacy work side by side in New Hampshire, this one's for you. It's not your Fault
Today's guests are Shauna Foster, Executive Director of New Beginnings — Without Violence and Abuse in Laconia, and Meg Jenks of the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. In this episode of Better Together, we sit down with Shauna and Meg to talk about what domestic and sexual violence actually looks like in the Lakes Region and across New Hampshire right now, who gets left out when a state is this rural, and what it takes to keep a crisis center and a statewide coalition running in the same direction. They also get into the misconceptions that follow this work around — about survivors, about the systems meant to help them, and about what "support" really requires. If you care about how communities respond to violence, want to understand what survivors in NH are actually up against, or just want to hear what it takes to hold this work for years without burning out, this one's for you. About New Beginnings — Without Violence and Abuse: the domestic, sexual, and stalking violence crisis center serving Belknap County, providing 24-hour crisis intervention, emergency shelter, court advocacy, and support groups to survivors and their families. Professor Disrupts the Classroom
Dr. Lowell "Chris" Matthews has spent his career proving that education doesn't stop at prison walls, it just needs someone willing to build the bridge. As founder and executive director of MOKSE Educational Services, and an associate professor of Global Business and Leadership at Southern New Hampshire University, he's spent years working to expand access to education for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated learners, and to dismantle the stigma that follows people long after their sentence ends. In this episode of Better Together, we sit down with Chris to talk about how MOKSE came to be, what it took to build Project AIM, SNHU's initiative bringing higher education into correctional settings, and why he believes education and entrepreneurship are two of the most powerful tools we have for breaking cycles of incarceration. He also talks about the impact teachers have on their students, and why his classes at SNHU were never really about the grade. For Chris, the real measure of a class is the skill a student walks out with and carries into the world. If you care about second chances, believe education should be a right and not a reward, or just want to hear what it takes to change a system from the inside, this one's for you. About MOKSE Educational Services: a national nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives through education, empowerment, and entrepreneurship, working with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated learners to break down barriers and stop the stigma associated with incarceration. He's not AGAINST news - Just does it differently (feat. Granite Goodness)

The Prodigal CEO returns Home to Granite VNA
Granite VNA — New Hampshire's largest not-for-profit home health and hospice agency — has a new President and CEO, and he's not exactly new to the building. Jim Culhane spent years working his way up at Granite VNA, left to run Lake Sunapee Region VNA & Hospice for over a decade, and has now come back to lead the whole organization. In this episode of Better Together, we sit down with Jim to talk about what it actually takes to lead a 125+ year old healthcare nonprofit, how he navigated a major organizational merger at his last agency, what home health and hospice care really look like in rural New Hampshire, and why he came back to Concord to do it all over again — this time in charge. If you live in the Lakes Region or Central NH, care about nonprofit leadership, or just want to understand what home health and hospice agencies actually do (and why they matter more than most people realize), this one's for you. Two Mustached Men Talking
In the Season 1 finale of Better Together, host Jonathan Lile-Sexton sits down with Laconia City Manager Kirk Beattie to talk about how Laconia became the first city in New Hampshire to launch a social district — and what it actually takes to build one from the ground up. They get into the economics, the public health questions you probably didn't think to ask, and why a former firefighter-turned-city-manager might be exactly the right person to think about what happens when things go sideways. A great conversation to close out the season.
