The Cove: Food, Dignity, and Connection
Nearly three decades ago, The Cove began with a simple question: How can we help our neighbors in need? What started as a small food bank in downtown Twisp has grown into an organization providing food, financial assistance, weekend meals for children, holiday programs for families, and a place where people can find connection without judgment. In this episode of Between Here and Help, Nicole Ringgold sits down with founder and executive director Glenn Schmeckel and assistant director Rick Lewis to talk about how The Cove has evolved alongside the Methow Valley. They discuss the growing need for food assistance, the extraordinary role volunteers play, and the importance of offering help in a way that preserves dignity. They also share how a simple bag of food can open the door to something larger: conversation, friendship, practical assistance, and the reassurance that someone is paying attention. At its heart, this is a conversation about what can happen when neighbors notice a need and decide, together, to do something about it.

Aero Methow: The Peer Support Team
First responders routinely step into some of the most difficult moments in other people’s lives. But what happens when those experiences begin to accumulate? In this episode of Between Here and Help, Nicole Ringgold talks with Meg Trebon and Byron Braden of Aero Methow Rescue Service’s Peer Support Team about the emotional toll of emergency response and the importance of caring for the people who care for us. Drawing on decades of experience in EMS, firefighting, and wildland fire, Meg and Byron discuss how repeated exposure to trauma can build over time, how attitudes toward responder mental health have changed, and why trust, confidentiality, and connection are at the heart of peer support. They also share how the Twisp River Fire led Aero Methow to create a trained peer support team, what happens after a particularly difficult call, and how responders learn to recognize when a colleague may need more support. Ultimately, their message reaches beyond emergency services: sometimes caring for another person begins simply by paying attention, asking how they are doing, and being willing to hear the answer.

Aero Methow: Caring for Our Community
Aero Methow: Caring for Our Community What does it mean to provide emergency medical care in a place where your patients may also be your friends, neighbors, and the people you see around town? In this season finale of Between Here and Help, host Nicole Ringgold returns to Aero Methow Rescue Service for a conversation with Ruth Payne, Brian McAuliffe, and Ian Ross about the human side of rural EMS. They share their very different paths into emergency medicine and what it takes to respond across nearly 2,000 square miles of the Methow Valley and surrounding wilderness—where distance, weather, terrain, and limited access to hospitals can dramatically shape a call. But this episode goes beyond emergency response. Ruth, Brian, and Ian talk about caring for neighbors during some of their most vulnerable moments, the calls that have stayed with them, the importance of volunteers, and the quieter ways Aero Methow helps people remain safe and independent. They also offer practical advice for residents, including one message they want everyone to hear: if you think you're having a medical emergency, don't wait to call 911. Ultimately, this is a conversation about what rural communities do best: take care of one another. As Ian puts it, “We’re our best resource for each other. We’re our community taking care of our community.” This episode marks the end of Season One of Between Here and Help. The podcast will take a short break and return with Season Two in October. Angel Flight West: Removing Barriers to Care
Angel Flight West: Removing Barriers to Care What happens when the biggest obstacle to healthcare isn't the treatment itself—but simply getting there? In this episode of Between Here and Help, host Nicole Ringgold speaks with Russell Stearns, Director of Outreach for Angel Flight West, and volunteer pilot Clay Ross about the nonprofit organization that has provided more than 100,000 free flights to people across the western United States seeking medical care and other essential services. Together, Brad and Florence reflect on the Montessori philosophy, the importance of early childhood education, the role of observation and trust in learning, and the profound ways children shape the adults caring for them.
