About Between Services at CrossRoads Church - Decatur, Texas
Welcome to Between Services at CrossRoads Church - a space where we talk about the heart behind what we do.
Every Sunday we gather - but there’s always more happening than what fits in a 75-minute service.
This podcast is about clarity, transparency, leadership, vision - and sometimes just honest conversations about following Jesus in Wise County.
We’re glad you’re here.

What happens when God doesn't do what you expected? When you've prayed, believed, and waited—but nothing seems to change?
In Episode 19 of Between Services at CrossRoads Church, Barry and Jonathan have an honest conversation about disappointment with God, unanswered prayers, doubt, and what it means to keep trusting Jesus when life doesn't go as planned.
In Luke 7, John the Baptist finds himself in prison, hearing about the miracles Jesus is performing for everyone else. But his own circumstances haven't changed. So John sends Jesus a deeply personal question: “Are you the one, or should we expect someone else?”
What do we do when we know God can do something, but we don't understand why He hasn't done it for us?
Together, we explore the difference between trusting what God does and trusting who God is, why Jesus welcomes our honest questions, and how sometimes the greatest expression of faith is simply holding on.
You can bring your disappointment. You can bring your doubts. You can bring your questions. You can bring it all to Jesus.

A Legacy of Faith with Ray Taylor | Episode 18
Before we get to Ray Taylor's story, there's some important business to handle: Cowboys football, construction updates, the mysterious intelligence of animals, and whether Ray really is everybody's favorite elder.
In Episode 18 of **Between Services**, Barry and Jonathan sit down with CrossRoads elder Ray Taylor for a conversation filled with stories, laughter, and a lifetime of following Jesus.
From getting married young and discovering his calling to music and ministry, to years of traveling, leading worship, and serving churches alongside his wife Judy, Ray shares the unexpected ways God has directed his life.
Along the way, we hear about meaningful encounters with God, learning to make room for the Holy Spirit, and why relationships and caring for people have always mattered more than simply doing ministry.
And perhaps most beautifully, we see a legacy of faith unfolding through generations, from Ray's grandfather to his children and grandchildren.
It's a conversation about faithfulness, worship, family, and discovering that **there's always another opportunity to say yes to what God is doing.**

Who Comes First? | God, Money & Your Heart - Episode 17
Episode 17 - Who Comes First?
Money. We all use it, we all need it, and yet the church can sometimes be hesitant to talk about it. But Jesus wasn’t.
In Episode 17 of Between Services, Barry and Jonathan have an honest conversation about money, generosity, tithing, and the deeper issue underneath all of it: Who comes first?
Looking at the very different responses of the Rich Young Ruler and Zacchaeus, they explore Jesus’ teaching about God and money, how something useful can become an idol, and why generosity is about much more than giving a percentage. It’s about trust, stewardship, and recognizing God as our provider.
We don’t give so God will love us. We give because He already does.
So maybe the better question isn’t simply, “How much should I give?” but “God, how can I honor You with what You’ve given me?”
Plus, before any of that, Barry has a black eye, there’s a construction update, and we attempt to determine whether being rich is worth it if you have to walk everywhere.

CrossRoads' Elder Travis Taylor - Ep 16
Episode 16 hits the road as Barry and Jonathan head to Taylor Ranch to sit down with CrossRoads worship leader and elder Travis Taylor. Before getting to Travis’ story, there’s plenty of important business to handle, including questionable church reviews, prison-food reviews, chicken-fried steak, and whether Travis might secretly be the future sponsor of the podcast.
Then the conversation turns to a story that winds from a wild childhood in Houston to a faith that became personal, playing football, writing worship songs, touring and recording music, and eventually spending ten years leading worship in California. Through every unexpected turn, Travis shares how he learned to recognize God’s direction and trust the moments when God seemed to be saying, “Hey, I’m in this.”
Travis also shares what brought his family back to Texas and eventually to CrossRoads, including what struck him the first time he walked into a worship gathering: it wasn’t about the music, it was a room full of people genuinely worshiping Jesus.
It’s a conversation about calling, family, worship, unexpected seasons, and learning to see the faithfulness of God through all of them. Plus, we discover Travis’ favorite kid. At least for now.

Living Unoffendable
Barry and Jonathan are back on the road, recording from the historic Wise County Square. They swap stories about teaching their kids to drive, attempt another highly informed construction update involving joists and “decorative corbels,” remember Dolly Parton, and somehow recognize Alan Jackson as one of the great theologians of our time.
Then the conversation turns to something all of us experience - offense.
We live in a culture where it’s easy to react quickly, assume the worst, and hold onto hurt. But what if followers of Jesus became some of the least offendable people around?
Through James 1, the story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5, and the example of Jesus, Barry and Jonathan talk about unmet expectations, the difference between being hurt and living offended, and how easily offense can steal our joy and affect the way we love others.
Maybe the goal isn’t always to make our point. Maybe it’s to make a difference for Jesus.
When offense comes - and it will - perhaps the better question is:
What would love do next?

Between Services at CrossRoads Church - Episode 14
Episode 14 hits the road with some singing, plenty of questionable harmonies, a 60th birthday recap, Vince Gill at the Ryman, “decorative buttressing,” and a visit from Jocelyn Ross before she heads off to college. Somewhere along the way, we debate how we’d want to die, revisit our great white shark survival skills, and struggle with the pronunciation of “adjectives.” Just another normal episode of Between Services.
Then we sit down with CrossRoads Executive Pastor Josh Dalton to hear the story behind the pastor. Josh shares about growing up as a pastor’s kid, moving from performance and legalism toward the love and grace of Jesus, serving as a missionary in the Philippines, and eventually finding his way to CrossRoads. It’s a conversation about faith, family, ministry, and learning that following Jesus is less about getting everything right and more about trusting the One who has already made us right.

Between Services at CrossRoads Church - Episode 13
Episode 13 | Can We Really Hear God's Voice?
Episode 13 kicks off with plenty of laughs as Barry and Jonathan celebrate 1,000 podcast downloads, Barry's 60th birthday, construction updates, weight loss victories, a correction about milking a pig, and a surprisingly intense debate over whether you'd rather face a great white shark or a grizzly bear.
As always, the conversation takes a few unexpected turns before arriving at a meaningful question. Can we really hear God today?
Jonathan and Barry explore what Scripture says about recognizing the Shepherd's voice, creating space to listen, and responding in obedience. They discuss practical ways God speaks through His Word, the Holy Spirit, wise counsel, peace, conviction, and life's circumstances, while reminding us that hearing God isn't primarily about getting answers, but about growing in relationship with Him.
If you've ever wondered how to discern God's voice in everyday life, this conversation offers biblical encouragement and practical wisdom for walking faithfully with Jesus.

Between Services at CrossRoads Church - Episode 12
Episode 12 starts the way every good episode should, with plenty of laughs. Jonathan, Barry, and Cody bounce from Construction Talk and blue herons to church softball and random trivia before shifting into a conversation many people have asked for: What is the role of an elder at CrossRoads Church?
Together they discuss the biblical foundation for elders, why CrossRoads Church is elder-led and staff-empowered, how elders are selected, and the heart behind shepherding the church. They also discuss accountability, leadership, and caring for people through both joyful and difficult seasons, offering an honest look at how CrossRoads seeks to follow Scripture while faithfully leading the church.

Between Services at CrossRoads Church - Episode 10
Yep, we made it to Episode 10! And we're celebrating the only way we know how: by telling on ourselves.
This episode includes Jonathan and Barry's embarrassing worship-leading stories, construction talk that is somewhat informative, a little NBA Finals discussion, and a conversation about conflict and conflict resolution.
Conflict is a part of every relationship. Families have it. Churches have it. Friends have it. Even followers of Jesus have it. The question isn't whether we'll experience conflict, but whether we'll handle it in a way that leads toward healing instead of division.
Join us as we explore God's heart for reconciliation, restoration, forgiveness, and the kind of healthy conflict that helps relationships grow stronger instead of pulling them apart.
