About Between the Lugs - Diary of a Small Business
Join Greg, Oliver and Gordon as they talk through the realities of building and running Marloe Watch Company - from product ideas and design to marketing, launch, and the everyday decisions that come with growing a British business.
Each episode starts with a simple idea or observation and quickly grows into something bigger. From product decisions and creative direction to industry trends and customer behaviour, nothing is off‑limits.
Some conversations stay focused. Others don’t. That’s part of it.
Whether you’re into watches, small business, marketing, design, or just enjoy hearing ideas take shape in real time, Between the Lugs offers a candid look inside a company working things out as it goes.
Hosted by Greg (Marketing Manager), Oliver (Operations Director), and Gordon (Creative Director).
More on the Lug-heads:
Oliver brings over two decades of marketing experience to Marloe Watch Company. Self‑described as “not from the watch world,” Oliver set out to create a mechanical watch with real value at its core. His emphasis on customer experience, quality, and considered decision‑making has helped define Marloe as one of the most unique watch brands in Britain today.
Gordon nearly marked Oliver's initial introductory email as spam - but he's gone on to design 25 watch collections at Marloe and has played a fundamental part in allowing the brand to stand out in a crowded market. A storyteller and self-proclaimed “Chief of Crayons,” he creates watches rooted in narrative and detail.
Greg focuses on how brands connect through stories and intent. Equal parts marketer and “detective of brand strategy,” he’s always looking to understand the why and how behind the work. He's also quite handy with a camera. Ultimately, he's just happy to be here.

What happens when Gordon goes on holiday, and Olly is left alone to face the questions?
In this episode of Between the Lugs: Diary of a Small Business, Greg puts Oliver in the hot seat for a wide-ranging interrogation covering everything from his choice of lager in his younger years and his motoring history to the future of Marloe Watch Company.
Could some of Marloe’s past watches make a comeback? What would Olly change about the business? And which questionable decisions still haunt him to this day?
We start with the easy questions, lull him into a false sense of security, and then get into the stuff that might make things a little uncomfortable.
This episode is brought to you by the tools you need to get a neat cheek line. Because apparently, having a beard trimmer and knowing how to use one are two entirely different skills.
🎙️ Between the Lugs: Diary of a Small Business — the watches, the business, the questionable decisions, and the conversations that probably should have stayed off the record.
Let us know what you think in the comments, and tell us what you'd ask Olly if you had him in the hot seat.

A Very Swiss Business Trip
What actually happens when a small British watch company heads to Switzerland?
In this episode of Between the Lugs: Diary of a Small Business, Greg catches up with Gordon and Olly following their recent trip to Switzerland, where they met with manufacturers, strengthened existing relationships and explored new opportunities for Marloe.
We talk about why face-to-face relationships matter in business, what you can learn by getting out from behind the emails, and how important it is for a small company to understand the people and processes behind the products it creates.
There was also some beautiful scenery, some surprisingly profound thoughts about localised produce, and quite a lot of cheese. And, naturally, Gordon has some thoughts on fondue.

Why do certain objects become important to us? What makes something worth owning, keeping or passing on? And how do design, craftsmanship, memories and the stories we attach to things turn an ordinary object into something much more personal?
From the everyday objects we barely notice to the things we'd never dream of throwing away, we explore why the things we own can become part of who we are.

When Thing Don't Go To Plan...
Welcome to Between the Lugs: Diary of a Small Business — the podcast where we talk through the realities of running an independent business, from product design and marketing to the ideas, mistakes and conversations in between.
Not every marketing or product idea is a winner. Sometimes the campaign doesn't land. Sometimes the timing is completely wrong. Sometimes you look back at something you were convinced was brilliant and wonder what on earth you were thinking or why it did not work. Or sometimes you look at what others have done and work out what did — and didn't — work.

Where Do We Begin?
Welcome to Between the Lugs: Diary of a Small Business — the podcast where we talk through the realities of running an independent watch company, from product design and marketing to the ideas, mistakes and conversations in between.
In this episode, we address Greg’s lack of hindsight when it comes to skincare, before looking back on more than 11 years of building Marloe Watch Company — from getting a business off the ground by simply “making it exist”, to the tactics used to grow, lessons learned, the importance of trademarks, and the trials that come with being the small fish in a big pond.
What worked? What didn’t? And what do Oliver and Gordon know now that they wish they’d known when they started?
