Between The Quotation Marks is a podcast hosted by sisters Wamuyu and Tess Kangethe. Every episode starts with one quote and unpacks the story behind it through honest, unfiltered conversation. From betrayal and boundaries to business, burnout, healing and growth, they talk about the things most people only say behind closed doors. Two sisters, one quote, endless layers. New episodes every Friday. Follow, share, and send us your thoughts
🎙️ Ep. 9: Is Happiness Something You Find or Something You Do?
Ep. 9 of Between The Quotation Marks. Wamuyu and Tess unpack one quote: “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I woke up and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” They ask whether happiness is something you find or something you do, and why we keep postponing joy until the next milestone, the next house, the next project. Along the way: hedonic adaptation, what service looks like between sisters and friends, and why showing up when your social battery is empty can leave you with a full cup. Watch on YouTube and listen on all podcast platforms.

Ep. 8: Boundaries Aren’t Control
Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Wamuyu and Tess get honest about the gap between understanding yourself and actually changing, and call out the therapy-speak getting misused along the way: “protecting my peace” as an excuse to avoid conflict, “boundaries” as a way to control someone else instead of yourself. Wamuyu admits to a message she’s left unanswered for a month out of pure ego. Tess finds an old journal entry and realizes how far she’s actually come. Self-awareness is the first step. This episode is about the second one.

Ep. 7: Looking in the Mirror (Part 2 of 3)
Part 2 of our three-part series continues and this time the mirror’s turned inward. Wamuyu and Tess get honest about the parts of themselves they’d rather not look at directly: humility that isn’t as solid as it seems, repeating the same relationship pattern with different faces, and why managing other people’s careers was easier than facing her own music. The line that sums it up: “someone doing a bad thing is not that person being a bad person.” Part 3 wraps the series soon. Now streaming on YouTube and all platforms.

Ep. 5 Part 1: No one is coming to rescue you.
"Whatever a person sows, that will they also reap." This is Part 1 of a three-part series where Wamuyu and Tess dig into karma, real consequences vs. empty apologies, and why intention matters as much as the action itself (the flowers debate is a whole mood). It builds to the episode's real center: boundaries, self-abandonment, and Wamuyu's honest admission that her life looked perfect on paper at 30 while she felt completely empty inside. Parts 2 and 3 coming soon.

Ep. 4: Running on Empty
You can't pour from an empty cup, but what does "empty" actually mean, and when does self-care quietly become an excuse to avoid hard conversations? Wamuyu and Tess get honest about where they're each running on empty right now: 25+ client calls a day with no system to manage them, and the lowest point of a marriage falling apart. They land somewhere unexpected, that you can show up for someone even while running low, as long as you say so. Plus: a practical fix for structuring rest before burnout makes the decision for you.

Ep. 3: Villain, Victim, Human (Part 2)
Part 2 picks up right where we left off. Wamuyu and Tess go deeper into villain vs. victim vs. human. Why blame feels easier than nuance, what it actually takes to hold someone accountable instead of just labeling them the bad guy, and a raw moment about being isolated by your own family when you finally say "I'm done." Also: being reduced to the worst thing you've ever done, and the manipulation tactic of someone using your own shame against you. Our first YouTube episode is now live across all platforms.

Episode 3: Villain, Victim, Human
Villain, victim, or just human? Part 1 of Episode 3 has Wamuyu and Tess sitting with a quote that hits close to home: healing doesn't start with figuring out who was wrong, it starts with asking what was actually happening to both of you. They dig into recent betrayals, where accountability ends and abuse begins, and whether you can be hurt and harmful at the same time. Also: a proper introduction to who they are outside of being sisters. This is our first episode on YouTube — Part 2 drops September 18th.

Ep. 2 part 2: The Price of Launching
Part 2 is here. This half goes deeper than the first. Wamuyu and Tess get into who actually shows up for you in business (hint: not always who you'd expect), the discipline of scheduling rest before burnout demands it, and why "launching is the hard part" is a lie nobody warns you about. The heaviest turn: Tess opens up about her first business failing, not from bad instincts, but as fallout from a marriage quietly falling apart underneath it; and why that was never a personal failure. Part 1 dropped last week; this one completes the conversation.

Ep. 2: Every expert was once a beginner
Every expert was once a beginner, every successful business was once someone's terrifying first day. In Part 1 of this episode, Wamuyu and Tess get real about the chaos of building their own businesses: token meters nobody warned them about, a dental chair leak on opening day, and the five-decisions-a-day rule that's saved Tess's sanity. A conversation about structure, decision paralysis, and choosing yourself when the timing finally feels right. Part 2 drops August 28th 2026

Ep. 1: The Cost of Trusting People
Every quote has a story. This one costs more than most. Wamuyu and Tess Kangethe open the show with: ”To be betrayed or cheated is a small price to pay for showing up in the world assuming the best in people.” Wamuyu breaks down the friendship that fell apart on her spectacularly last December: the favors called in, the excuses made, the moment ”friend” and ”someone who’s just useful to have around” stopped meaning the same thing. It’s a real conversation about naivety, self-protection, and what it actually costs to keep showing up for people who don’t deserve it.
