Between Two Phans Ep. 10: Two Phantoms in One Show + 40th Anniversary Casting

Andrea and Lindsey are back with stories from one of their wildest Masquerade performances yet, plus their reactions to the newly announced Phantom of the Opera 40th anniversary casting. Andrea's 25th Masquerade show turned into an unexpected two-Phantom performance after a mid-show cast switch. They break down what happened, from the Phantom elevator game and a private boat moment to a lengthy show stop in the carnival and the surprise casting change that followed. Lindsey also shares why she enjoyed Masquerade more the second time around, how a smaller audience changed the experience, and why approaching the production as an immersive attraction rather than a traditional stage show made a difference. Then, Andrea and Lindsey react to Jordan Donica being announced as the Phantom for the 40th anniversary cast, discuss the significance of the casting, share thoughts on Sierra Boggess as Carlotta, and make predictions about future Phantom casting and productions around the world. In this episode of Between Two Phans, Andrea (Flagbridge Designs) and Lindsey (Phantom on a Budget) explore the world of non-replica productions of The Phantom of the Opera. In this episode we discuss: • What replica vs non-replica productions mean • The controversial Restaged Tour • The Italian Phantom production starring Ramin Karimloo • How the show evolved when it moved to Spain and Mexico • Differences in staging, costumes, and orchestration • The wild Romanian production and other international versions • Why non-replica productions help Phantom reach new audiences From Europe to Latin America to Africa, Phantom continues to evolve in unexpected ways around the world. Between Two Phans Ep 6: POTO Takes that Will Get Us Canceled

In this episode of Between Two Phans, Andrea (Flagbridge Designs) and Lindsey (Phantom on a Budget) finally say the quiet parts out loud. This is the hot takes episode. From 2004 movie discourse to Love Never Dies chaos, replica vs. “brilliant original” wars, fandom gatekeeping, angry Facebook men, and why people feel like they own the show — nothing is off limits. We’ve both been in Phantom spaces for a long time (one of us since the late ’90s, one of us very loudly for the past few years), and we’ve seen the same cycles repeat again and again. In this episode, we discuss: • The evolution of Phantom fandom from forums to Tumblr to TikTok • Gatekeeping, elitism, and the “fan resume” era • Why you’re allowed to like (or dislike) any Phantom you want • Love Never Dies and its complicated legacy • The replica vs. restage debate (Pegasus, chandelier, doubles) • Hal Prince on change and why theatre must evolve • Why Phantom doesn’t belong to us — even if we love it • How diversity in casting is shifting the energy of the fandom We are not here to tell you what to like. We are here to say: you can have opinions without policing other people’s joy. Phantom has survived for nearly four decades because it evolves. The fandom survives when we do the same. 🖤 Between Two Phans is a mostly unedited, sometimes unhinged, always enthusiastic podcast about The Phantom of the Opera. In this episode, we discuss: • The origin of Masquerade NYC after Broadway closed • The building history and why it matters • The red letters, newspaper drops, and guerrilla marketing campaign • “Sign the Ledger” and Discord activations • What a “pulse” is and why every show feels different • Why this is not replica Phantom — and why that matters • Cast rotations and wildly different Phantom interpretations • Audience energy roulette and immersive unpredictability • When tech and crowd flow impact your experience • Why immersive theatre requires a mindset shift • Ticket pricing and what you’re actually paying for • Dress code realities (no heels. seriously.) • Why immersive Phantom expands who gets to be Eric and Christine Masquerade isn’t Broadway in a warehouse. It’s a reinvention. A version of Phantom that shifts depending on the cast, the pulse group, and the energy in the room. If you’re planning a visit — or just curious how Phantom survives outside the proscenium — this is your spoiler-light guide. 🖤 Between Two Phans is a mostly unedited, sometimes unhinged, always enthusiastic podcast about The Phantom of the Opera.

Between Two Phans Ep 4: Phantom Original Broadway Pro Shot (1988 Archival Deep Dive)

The sacred scrolls. In Episode 4, Andrea (Flagbridge Designs) and Lindsey (Phantom on a Budget) deep dive into the original Broadway cast archival recording of The Phantom of the Opera, filmed in May 1988 and housed at the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive (TOFT) at the New York Public Library. This recording is not commercial and can only be viewed in person for research purposes — and yes, it’s absolutely worth the reservation. In this episode, we discuss: • How to access the NYPL Theatre on Film and Tape Archive • What the viewing experience is actually like • The surprising quality of the 1988 multi-camera recording • Sarah Brightman’s original Christine and early agency in “Point of No Return” • Michael Crawford’s eerie, book-accurate Phantom • Phantom Hands™ and the intensity of “Stranger Than You Dreamt It” • Steve Barton’s foundational Raoul performance • Differences in blocking, choreography, and tone from 1988 to today • The slower Broadway chandelier drop • Early lyric and staging variations • The devastating physical transformation in the Final Lair • Why this archival recording feels like missing canon for longtime fans This isn’t nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. It’s blueprint viewing. You see where the choices started. You see what evolved. And you understand why these performances became foundational for every production that followed. If you’re ever in New York City, book a viewing. It’s a piece of theatre history. 🖤 Between Two Phans is a mostly unedited, sometimes unhinged, always enthusiastic podcast about The Phantom of the Opera.
