Episode 63: The Niche That Seemed Too Small with Ryan Lee
Show Notes: What if the niche you think is too small is the one you should be building on? In this episode of Beyond Six Figures, Ziv Raviv sits down with Ryan Lee, founder of Landscape Lighting Secrets, a coaching program for the landscape lighting industry, and host of the Lighting for Profits podcast. Ryan spent 12 years running a landscape lighting company in Texas, then moved into digital marketing and found he didn’t love the work. When his own coach told him to become “the landscape lighting guy,” Ryan pushed back because the niche felt too small. He tried it anyway in 2020 and says he has never looked back. In this conversation, Ryan shares how he built trust in a trade he estimates has only around 1,000 to 1,500 serious, dedicated companies in the US by leading with free value: a weekly podcast, his Facebook group, free monthly webinars, and an email list. He also explains why he sells the outcome, not the deliverables, why he intentionally wants a client’s investment to hurt, and why the prospects he usually turns down are the ones whose ego is too big to be coached. If you’re a coach, consultant, or service-based business owner who worries your niche is too narrow, this episode will challenge how you think about focus, free content, and the clients you say yes to. Episode Highlights: Why a $4,000 Job Beat a $250 One Ryan was about to move to Texas to grow a window cleaning business when he heard a single outdoor lighting job could sell for $4,000, and he decided he’d much rather sell that than a $250 window cleaning job. Two Visionaries, One Company Reading the book Traction helped Ryan see that when two visionaries pull one company in different directions, no one ends up happy, and that realization led to him being bought out after 12 years. The Niche He Almost Passed On After COVID cost him half his digital marketing clients, Ryan toyed with becoming “the outdoor lighting guy” but dismissed the niche as too small, until his coach convinced him to try it in 2020. A Big Market Made of Small Players Ryan estimates there are only around 1,000 to 1,500 serious, dedicated landscape lighting companies in the US, while tens of thousands of small landscapers sell just a few small jobs a year. Leading With Value, Every Single Week Ryan built trust by answering questions in Facebook groups, hosting free monthly webinars, and committing to a weekly podcast he has kept up for five years (around episode 240 at the time of recording), while rarely asking for anything in return. Selling the Outcome, Not the Deliverables Ryan says his program is about the outcome more than the live calls, scripts, and templates, and shares how a full-time firefighter went from $60k in Christmas lights to over $700k in landscape lighting in the 12 months after they met. Why He Calls His Flagship Program Low Ticket Because members bolt landscape lighting onto a business they already run and sell $10,000 to $15,000 projects, Ryan says his team can help them make their money back in the first 60 days. Why the Investment Should Hurt Ryan offers payment options, but he looks for a commitment that hurts enough to spark action, because his most successful students are the ones who went all in with their back against the wall. No Plan B, No Safety Net Ryan says he technically offers a guarantee but doesn’t like giving people safety nets, because the real guarantee is that following the steps works and skipping them doesn’t. The Prospects He Turns Away Ryan declines prospects whose ego is too big to be coached, and explains why a coach, like the ones behind Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods, doesn’t need to be better than the client to see different angles and help. About Ryan Lee: Ryan Lee is the founder of Landscape Lighting Secrets, the world’s first coaching program dedicated to the landscape lighting industry. Ryan helps service business owners scale, increase profits, and reclaim their time. He blends mindset, sales, marketing, and systems into a playbook that works across service-based businesses, and his members learn to bolt landscape lighting onto the business they already run, from design and installation to pricing and customer service. Before coaching, Ryan co-founded Majestic Outdoor Lighting in Fort Worth, Texas, and spent 12 years growing it into a multimillion-dollar landscape lighting company before his exit. He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and an MBA from Utah State University. Ryan also hosts the Lighting for Profits podcast, runs Lighting Academy for design and installation fundamentals, and founded the Light It Up Expo, an annual event that brings the landscape, holiday, and permanent lighting industries together under one roof. He is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Episode 62: Stop Fighting Your Fear of Self-Promotion with C.J. Hayden
Show Notes: What if the reason you’re not getting enough clients has less to do with your marketing plan, and more to do with the fear of talking to the people who could hire you? In this episode of Beyond Six Figures, Ziv Raviv sits down with C.J. Hayden, business coach, writing mentor, and author of the bestselling Get Clients Now! and her newest book, Overcoming the Fear of Self-Promotion. C.J. started coaching self-employed people in the early 1990s, when everyone around her said entrepreneurs didn’t have any money. She turned her Get Clients Now! system into a book that doubled as a lead generator, and a licensed training program with hundreds of facilitators in countries around the world. She explains why it still works decades later: it teaches principles, not tactics, from the four stages of the universal marketing cycle to a daily action plan you quantify and put on your calendar. Then the conversation turns to why so many self-employed professionals buy ads, prospecting systems, and social media help instead of reaching out themselves. C.J. shares why she teaches people to make friends with their fear instead of crushing it, the I AM technique (the very first exercise in her new book), and how a former litigation attorney built a mediation practice on referrals once she named the fear that was holding her back. If you’re a coach, consultant, or service business owner who keeps putting off the outreach you know you need to do, this episode is for you. Episode Highlights: Betting on Self-Employed Clients In the early 1990s, C.J. gave up her clients at mid-sized companies to coach self-employed people, even though everyone around her said entrepreneurs didn’t have any money. One System, Multiple Income Streams Because C.J. built Get Clients Now! to be systematic and replicable, other coaches could teach it too, and one system became a book that generated leads, a licensed program with hundreds of facilitators, and a program business owners paid to take themselves. Principles Outlast Platforms The book was updated in 2005 and again in 2013 for social media, but C.J. says it doesn’t really need a new edition because everything it teaches is still exactly the same. Awareness Is Not Enough Coaches, consultants, accountants, and attorneys get clients through live conversations, and it takes a lot more than posting on social media to get there. Marketing Like a Dinner Invitation, Not a War C.J. wrote Get Clients Now! like a cookbook because she wanted marketing and sales to feel warm, nurturing, and friendly, not like a battle to defeat the prospective client. Find Where You’re Stuck The universal marketing cycle has four stages (filling the pipeline, following up, having sales conversations, and turning those conversations into clients), and the first step is finding the stage that needs more work. An Intention Is Not a Plan “Increase market visibility” is only an intention, so C.J. has people pick their missing success ingredients, choose actions from a daily action plan menu, and quantify and calendar every one of them. The Fear Behind Marketing Shortcuts Buying ads, paying for a LinkedIn prospecting system, or hiring a social media guru is often a way to avoid talking to future clients, and today the same reluctance people once had about phone calls shows up as fear of email. Make Friends With Your Fear Instead of crushing fear, C.J. teaches people to notice it with the I AM technique (“I am aware and I can move forward”), name it, and then give it what it needs, such as confidence or reassurance. From Litigator to Mediator A former lawyer feared her colleagues would laugh at her new mediation work; once she named that fear, she built a successful practice where all of her business came from attorney referrals. About C.J. Hayden: C.J. Hayden is a business coach, writing mentor, and the author of eight books on marketing, self-employment, and nonfiction writing, including the bestselling Get Clients Now! A 28-Day Marketing Program for Professionals, Consultants and Coaches. First published in 1999 and now in its third edition, Get Clients Now! has sold over 100,000 copies and has been translated into Chinese and Vietnamese. The program behind the book has been taught by hundreds of facilitators in countries around the world. Since 1992, C.J. has helped thousands of entrepreneurs and creatives get clients, get strategic, and get their writing done. Before she became a coach, she worked as a business process consultant for mid-sized companies. She holds the Certified Professional Co-Active Coach credential and was one of the first coaches in the world to earn the Master Certified Coach credential from the International Coach Federation. Her newest book, Overcoming the Fear of Self-Promotion, is based on a course taken by hundreds of self-employed professionals over the past two decades, and gives specific techniques for managing fear and resistance about marketing and selling. She also hosts Get It Written Day, a monthly virtual writing retreat for self-employed professionals and creatives. A speaker and workshop leader, C.J. has taught for the International Coach Federation, The Coaches Training Institute, Wells Fargo, SCORE, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. She founded and directs the nonprofit Citizen Angel, which supports economic empowerment for girls and women in the developing world. Links & Resources: C.J. Episode 61: Why Perfectionists Procrastinate with Sam Laura Brown
Show Notes: What if your procrastination isn’t a motivation problem at all, but perfectionism in disguise? In this episode of Beyond Six Figures, Ziv Raviv sits down with Sam Laura Brown, perfectionism coach, founder of Perfectionists Getting Sh*t Done (PGSD) and host of The Perfectionism Project podcast. Sam explains why perfectionism is less about doing things perfectly and more about avoiding doing anything imperfectly, and how it shows up in five patterns: overthinking, procrastination, burnout, all-or-nothing thinking and fear of judgment. She introduces her Momentum Decisions framework, explains why choices that feel permanent, like printed materials, pricing or the name of your business, are so hard for perfectionists, and shares how perfectionism shows up when you lead a team. She also shares how her podcast became a fundamental part of her business, why it started paying off once she began selling on it, why a clear micro-niche helps people find her, why she focuses on group coaching, and why she pulled back on ChatGPT after about six months. If you’re a coach, consultant or service business owner who knows what to do but can’t get yourself to do it, this episode will help you spot the perfectionist thinking behind the delay. Episode Highlights: Perfectionism Is Avoiding Imperfection Perfectionism is less about doing things perfectly and more about avoiding doing anything imperfectly, which is why it so often looks like procrastination, overthinking and holding back effort. A Mindset You Can Shift, Not a Trait Sam treats perfectionism as a pattern of thinking you can change, and teaches people to work with their perfectionist mindset instead of against it. The Five Perfectionist Patterns Overthinking, procrastination, burnout, all-or-nothing thinking and fear of judgment are the signs Sam has seen time and time again, and about half of her clients didn’t know perfectionism was the problem. Momentum Decisions and the Perfectionism Handbrake Decisions that feel permanent, like something printed, a business name or your pricing, pull the perfectionism handbrake, and Sam’s coaching and Momentum Decisions framework help them feel like a much smaller deal. High Standards or Fear? What we call a high standard is often a fear of shame, disconnection and not belonging in disguise. Perfectionism When You Lead a Team Perfectionist leaders tend to swing toward micromanaging or people-pleasing, and Sam shares how she moved from wanting to be liked to holding her team to a clear standard. When the Podcast Started Paying Off The shift came around 50 episodes in, once Sam worked on her own perfectionism and started selling on the show instead of only sharing advice. The Power of a Micro-Niche Her show is built around one clear topic, perfectionism, so people find her by typing that word into a podcast app, and some hear about it from their therapist. Why Groups Work for Perfectionists Hearing someone else get coached breaks the shame of thinking you’re the only one with the problem, which is why Sam’s focus is group coaching. Why She Pulled Back on ChatGPT After about six months of using ChatGPT all day, Sam stopped using it for self-coaching because it acted like a yes man, and went back to handwritten self-coaching to keep growing her own thinking. About Sam Laura Brown: Sam Laura Brown is a perfectionism coach and the founder of Perfectionists Getting Sh*t Done (PGSD), a 12-month group coaching program for perfectionists who are building businesses. She launched PGSD in 2019. Over the last 10+ years, Sam has helped more than 1,000 perfectionist entrepreneurs build their businesses, and she has built a multimillion-dollar business of her own. Inside PGSD, she leads most of the weekly group coaching calls and teaches members to plan their week with Power Planning, follow through without burning out and rest without guilt. She is also the host of The Perfectionism Project, a podcast that helps business owners and entrepreneurs overcome perfectionism and the procrastination, overthinking and fear of judgment that come with it. She launched the show in 2017, some time after a blog reader asked her to start one. New episodes come out every Monday, and the show has passed 600 episodes. Sam started her blog in 2013 while studying law, and in March 2017 she left her full-time job at a big accounting firm to blog full-time. She is based in Brisbane, Australia.
