Welcome to the Beyond Stabilization Podcast—a place for honest conversations about mental health, recovery, advocacy, and the realities that families and individuals face long after the crisis is over.
I’m your host, Tammy Willoughby, and this podcast was created from a simple belief: stabilization is not the same thing as recovery.
Too often, someone leaves a psychiatric hospital with a discharge plan and a follow-up appointment, but without the ongoing support they need to truly rebuild their life. Families are left overwhelmed. Caregivers are left searching for answers. And individuals are often expected to navigate recovery with limited resources.
Here, we're going to talk about what happens beyond stabilization.
We'll discuss serious mental illness, psychiatric care, discharge planning, caregiver experiences, peer support, recovery, supportive services, advocacy, and the changes we need to see in our mental health system.
We'll hear real stories. We'll have difficult conversations. We'll challenge outdated ideas. And we'll explore solutions that can help move mental health care from simply managing crises to supporting people through recovery and beyond.
Whether you're living with mental illness, supporting someone you love, working in the mental health field, or simply believe our system can do better—you have a place here.
This isn't just a podcast.
It's a conversation.
It's a community.
It's a movement.
Welcome to Beyond Stabilization.
Because getting through the crisis is only the beginning.

Four myths society needs to unlearn about serious mental illness
What picture comes to mind when you hear "serious mental illness"? If it's the worst moment of a stranger's worst day, or a sensationalized headline, you aren't alone. That image was handed to you. And it is built on myths.
In this episode, Tammy Willoughby takes on four myths society desperately needs to unlearn:
1. That serious mental illness is just a choice.
2. That it is bad behavior and the person just needs to try harder to act normal.
3. That people living with serious mental illness are inherently dangerous.
4. That the family is the problem.
These aren't harmless misunderstandings. They shape how the healthcare system responds, how the public reacts to someone in crisis on the street, and how families get blamed by a system that stabilizes and discharges then calls it done.
But amid all of that systemic failure, the truth is actually hopeful grounded in realism, not wishful thinking. Listen in, and you'll leave with the tools to spot these myths in the wild, including the ones you may have believed without realizing it.
Because healing doesn't end at discharge, and no family should have to navigate this journey alone.

Bone-deep paranoia, 72 hours without sleep, and the gap families fall into after discharge. Bipolar psychosis explained — plus the five-step Beyond Stabilization plan for bridging the missing middle

**Bipolar Psychosis and the Missing Middle**
Imagine looking at your own mother — your partner, your best friend — and feeling bone-deep certainty that they are secretly plotting to ruin your life. To the person in psychosis, that isn't a dream. It's reality.
Or imagine 72 hours without sleep and feeling like you've unlocked the secrets of the universe. That's the other door into this episode: mania.
This deep dive dismantles the casual way we use the word "bipolar" and replaces it with the clinical reality — a profound disruption of energy, sleep, and the brain's ability to regulate itself. You'll hear why mania feels like a sports car with the brakes cut, why lack of insight is a symptom and not stubbornness, and why arguing with a delusion is like using a math equation to put out a grease fire.
Then we turn to the people standing on the sidewalk: the caregivers sleeping with one eye open, and the missing middle they fall into the moment the hospital says "stabilized" and opens the door.
Inside:
- Hallucinations vs delusions — sensory misfires vs cognitive misfires
- The exact words that de-escalate psychosis: "I can see that this feels very real and frightening to you. I don't see it the same way, but I care about you and I want to help you feel safe."
- Why psychosis mirrors the mood — grandeur in mania, ruin in depression
- The five-step Beyond Stabilization plan: spot warning signs with data, write the crisis plan in peacetime, demand continuity of care at discharge, build the support network, and plan for a life beyond the crisis
- Recovery as a spiral staircase: a setback is a signal to adjust the plan, not proof you're back at square one
Psychosis is a symptom. It is not an identity. And a discharge date is not a recovery plan.
