Beyond the Arena: The Hendrickson Way is more than a sports podcast. Hosted by former NBA and MLB athlete Mark Hendrickson, each episode explores leadership, resilience, high performance, faith, and the defining moments that shape our lives. Through personal stories and conversations with athletes, coaches, and leaders, you'll discover lessons that inspire growth, purpose, and a deeper appreciation for why we love sports—and life beyond the arena.
Confidence is a skill.
It's not something you're either born with or simply have. It's something you can develop, strengthen and train.
In Episode 13 of Beyond the Arena: The Hendrickson Way, I break down three important mental performance skills that can help athletes build confidence and perform at their best:
1. Visualization
See yourself doing what you want to do before you ever step into the competition.
2. Preparation
Confidence grows when you know you've put in the work and prepared yourself for the moment.
3. Self-Talk
What you say to yourself matters. Learning how to respond to mistakes, pressure and doubt can change how you perform.
After competing in professional basketball and baseball, I've seen firsthand how quickly confidence can change when things aren't going your way. The goal isn't to convince yourself that you're going to succeed every time. It's to develop the mental skills that allow you to trust yourself, stay focused and compete when the pressure is on.
That's the work I do with athletes through my mental performance coaching.

Don't wait until confidence becomes a problem. Develop it before you need it.

Episode #12 "Get off the sidelines and GET IN THE GAME"
At some point, every one of us is standing on the sideline.
In sports, you know what that looks like. You're in uniform. You're part of the team. You're watching the game happen in front of you, waiting for your opportunity to get in.
But what does that look like in your life?
Maybe you're standing on the sidelines of your career. Your relationships. Your health. Your dreams. Your faith. Your goals. Maybe you're waiting for the right time, the right opportunity, more confidence, more money, more experience, or for somebody else to tell you it's time to step in.
Here's the problem:
The game is being played whether you're in it or not.
In this episode of Beyond the Arena: The Hendrickson Way, I'm challenging all of us to take a hard look at where we're standing on the sidelines and why we're still there.
Getting in the game doesn't mean you have everything figured out. It doesn't mean you're guaranteed to win. It means you're willing to participate. You're willing to take the risk, take the shot, make the mistake, get knocked down and get back up.
Because you can't grow from the sideline.
You can't change your life from the sideline.
And you definitely can't win a game you're not willing to play.
So where are you standing on the sidelines?
More importantly...
What are you going to do about it?

Episode #11 "Urgency: Stop Assuming You Have Another Opportunity"
How often do we tell ourselves, “I’ll do it next game,” “I’ll work on it tomorrow,” or “I’ll be ready next season”?
We assume there will always be another opportunity.
But there won’t always be.
In this episode of Beyond the Arena: The Hendrickson Way, I talk about urgency and what it really means to approach your life and your sport with intention. Urgency isn't about panic or rushing. It's about understanding that today matters.
For athletes, being all in isn't something you say. It's something you show in the little things: how you prepare, how you practice, how you take care of your body, how you respond to coaching, and how you handle the opportunities right in front of you.
After 19 years of professional basketball and baseball, I've learned that you don't always know when you're getting your last opportunity. Your last game, your last practice, your last rep, or your last chance to do something you've been working toward.
So why wait?
Don't wait for the wake-up call. Don't assume there's always going to be another game, another season or another tomorrow.
Be all in today.

Episode #10 The One Area No One Teaches
We spend a tremendous amount of time developing athletes.
We develop their skills. We develop their bodies. We work on their strength, speed, conditioning and sport-specific abilities. We talk about nutrition, sleep, routines and the habits that help them perform.
But what about the mental side?
Who is proactively teaching athletes how to build confidence, handle pressure, respond to failure, reset after mistakes, control their emotions and stay focused when things aren't going their way?
Too often, the answer is nobody. We wait until an athlete is struggling and then tell them to figure it out.
In this episode, I talk about why mental performance needs to be part of athlete development long before an athlete needs it. I also break down my three-part approach to developing the complete athlete: develop your life, develop your physical, and develop your mental.
I've spent my career competing at the highest levels in two professional sports, and I've seen firsthand how small the margins become when everyone around you is talented. At some point, talent and physical ability aren't enough.
The goal isn't to guarantee an athlete a scholarship or a professional career. The goal is to help them get the most out of the talent they have and give themselves the best opportunity to reach their ceiling.
Because you can develop the athlete physically all you want. But if you don't develop the mind, you may be leaving a very important part of that athlete's potential untouched.

Episode #9 Failure is Part of the Process
We live in a world where almost everything is edited. Photos are edited. Videos are edited. Stories are edited. Mistakes get cut out, and we’re often left seeing everyone else’s finished product while we’re living through our own unfinished process.
In this episode, I talk about why failure is such an important part of growth and why we shouldn't be so afraid of it. From losing games and struggling as an athlete to the failures and setbacks that come with life, I've learned that failure doesn't define you. What you do with it does.
I also look at how social media can make failure even harder because we're constantly comparing our real lives to someone else's edited version.
Failure isn't always easy. In fact, sometimes it really sucks. But it can teach us things that success never will.
The question isn't whether we're going to fail. The question is what we're going to do when we do.

Episode #8 The Mental Game
Some of the most powerful development happens where no one can see or hear it.
In this episode, I talk about three mental skills that were developing through sports and ultimately impacted my life far beyond the arena.
Looking back, they started at a young age, long before I even realized they were happening. It wasn't until I reached the professional ranks that I began to understand just how impactful these skills could be, both in sports and in everyday life.
The game may be played on the court or field, but some of the most important development happens in the mind.

Humility: When Confidence Goes Too Far
Confidence is essential in sports. But what happens when confidence starts to become something else?
Mark takes you back to Opening Day 2008, when he was given the honor of starting for the Baltimore Orioles against Johan Santana and the New York Mets. After three scoreless innings, one look at the scoreboard changed his mindset. What happened next became a lesson he would never forget about confidence, arrogance, and staying committed to the process.
Because sometimes the hardest moments to stay humble are when everything is going right.

Episode #6 Resilience: Because Talent Isn't Enough
Talent can open doors. But eventually, every athlete and every person will be tested.
In this episode, Mark talks about why resilience may be the most important high performance habit of all. Through stories from his journey in basketball and baseball, he explores what happens when talent, confidence and hard work aren't enough, and why learning to adjust, keep going and move forward matters far beyond sports.
Talent isn't enough. What happens when you're tested?

Episode #2: Learning How To Compete
At 18 years old, I thought competing meant showing up every day and working harder than everyone else. My freshman season of college basketball taught me a lesson that would shape the rest of my career—and my life.
In this episode, I share how confidence alone wasn't enough, why I confused hard work with true competition, and the lessons I learned about preparation, recovery, mental resilience, and building the capacity for sustainable excellence.
Whether your arena is sports, business, leadership, parenting, or life, this episode will challenge the way you define competition and help you rethink what it really takes to perform at your best over the long haul.

For the first time in my life, my confidence was shaken. I was struggling internally, questioning myself, and faced with a decision: stay silent or have the difficult conversation I didn't want to have.
In this episode, I share the conversation that changed everything. It's a story about vulnerability, courage, and what can happen when we're willing to confront fear instead of letting fear define us.
Looking back, I realize that one conversation didn't just change my confidence—it changed the direction of my life.
