Beyond the Corporate Ladder is a leadership podcast featuring candid conversations with high-performing professionals who have built meaningful careers—and are now turning around to help others climb smarter, lead better, and live with greater intention.
Each episode spotlights experienced leaders as they reflect on the journey of success: what they believed early on, what changed as responsibility grew, and the lessons they wish they had learned sooner. These are stories about perspective, how success evolves, how leadership matures, and how fulfillment is redefined over time.
The conversations explore leadership, responsibility, pressure, growth, and purpose. Offering practical wisdom for ambitious professionals who want to achieve success without losing themselves in the process.
Beyond the Corporate Ladder is for those who are building, leading, and contributing at a high level: and who believe that true success is measured not just by titles or compensation, but by impact, alignment, and the life they are intentionally creating.
How to Build Passive Income Before Leaving Your Corporate Career!
What if you built your passive income BEFORE leaving your corporate career?
That’s exactly what my guest, Mike Qu, set out to do.
In Episode 22 of Beyond the Corporate Ladder, Mike and I talk about his transition from a successful software career into entrepreneurship, and why investing became an important part of making that transition possible.
Rather than quitting his job first and figuring out the finances afterward, Mike worked toward creating monthly passive income that could cover his expenses.
One measurement he became obsessed with was the wealth ratio:
Monthly passive income ÷ monthly expenses
When that number reaches 1, passive income theoretically covers your monthly lifestyle.
Mike eventually discovered direct oil and gas investing, which became one component of the passive-income portfolio he used to create greater financial independence.
But our conversation isn’t simply about oil and gas.
We get into the bigger questions around active income, passive income, entrepreneurship, diversification, due diligence, financial independence, and what it actually takes to create enough financial flexibility to make a career change on your own terms.
In This Episode, Mike and I Discuss:
✓ Why he built passive income before leaving tech
✓ His transition from corporate America into entrepreneurship
✓ Active income versus passive income
✓ How the “wealth ratio” works
✓ How he discovered alternative investments
✓ Why he became interested in direct oil and gas investments
✓ How oil and gas wells can generate investor income
✓ Why he doesn’t put all his investable capital into one asset class
✓ What due diligence looks like before investing
✓ How he evaluates oil and gas operators
✓ Why building active income still matters
✓ What he would tell someone earlier in the same journey
My biggest takeaway from this conversation?
Financial independence isn’t necessarily about escaping your job. It’s about creating enough flexibility to decide what you actually want to do next.

Redefining Success: Trusting Your Intuition and Building an Authentic Life with Dr. Jo L!
What if the success you built no longer matches the person you’ve become?
In Episode 21 of Beyond the Corporate Ladder, I talk with Dr. Jo, founder of Tula Soul, about what it takes to redefine success, trust your intuition, and build a career around a more authentic version of yourself.
Dr. Jo spent years as a clinical psychologist and built a successful private practice. But her own recovery journey and experiences with yoga and embodiment eventually changed the direction of both her life and career.
We get into the realities of making that transition including accepting a different income, letting go of old identities, finding clients, dealing with social media, creating boundaries, and learning when outside advice simply isn’t right for you.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- How Dr. Jo went from clinical psychologist to holistic entrepreneur
- Why our definition of success changes over time
- The connection between identity and career
- Why boundaries are especially important for high achievers
- How authenticity helped Dr. Jo grow her business
- Why she believes relationships create transformation
- How abundance and scarcity influence our definition of “enough”
- Why trusting your intuition can change your career decisions
One of my favorite ideas from the conversation comes near the end: everyone will have an opinion about what you should do to succeed, but what worked for them isn’t necessarily what’s right for you.
Sometimes the next step is learning to trust yourself.

Feeling Stuck in Your Career? How High Achievers Can Redefine Success with Joe Kamara!
You achieved the career goals. You became successful. So why do you still feel stuck?
For many high achievers, reaching the next stage of a career creates an unexpected question: Now what?
In Episode 20 of Beyond the Corporate Ladder, I talked with performance coach Joe Kamara about the identity shifts that happen throughout our careers and why redefining success may be necessary as our priorities, relationships, and lives change.
Joe shares patterns he’s observed across thousands of coaching conversations, from younger corporate professionals trying to build their careers to mid-career high achievers questioning what they actually want next.
They also explore Joe’s five interconnected levers for sustainable performance:
Sleep. Stress. Discipline. Focus. Sustainable energy.
Rather than treating career performance, leadership, health, and relationships as separate problems, Joe explains why looking at how they work together can help people perform more sustainably.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
- Why high achievers can feel stuck after becoming successful
- How career changes become identity changes
- Why your values and definition of success evolve
- How small experiments can help you explore your next chapter
- Why change can feel threatening to your identity
- How to protect your attention in a world constantly competing for it
- Why boundaries matter for focus
- How sleep, stress, discipline, focus, and energy work together
- Why Joe prefers work-life integration over “balance”
Chapter timestamps are mapped to the transcript flow and should be checked against the final video timeline before publishing.
