1 John 5:14-17

1 John 5:14-17

In 1 John 5:14-17, John encourages believers to approach God with confidence because of the assurance they have in Christ. Rather than treating prayer as a way to accomplish our own agendas, Christians are invited to trust God's will, intercede for fellow believers, and rest in the character of a faithful Father who hears and answers according to His perfect purposes.

Message Highlights:

Confident prayer is grounded in our relationship with God. Our confidence in prayer is rooted in the finished work of Christ and the assurance of eternal life, not in our own worthiness. Because we belong to God, we can approach Him with boldness and trust that He hears us.

Confident prayer submits to God's will. Prayer is not about persuading God to accomplish our plans but about aligning our hearts with His purposes. Like Jesus in Gethsemane, believers learn to pray, "Not my will, but yours be done."

Prayer is one of God's primary means of caring for His people. John calls believers to pray for brothers and sisters who are struggling with sin, demonstrating that Christian love moves toward others through faithful intercession. God uses the prayers of His people as part of His restoring work.

Our response to sin shapes our confidence before God. John distinguishes between a heart that continually confesses sin and one that hardens itself against God. The invitation for every believer is to walk in the light, confess sin, and enjoy the confidence that comes through Christ.

Main Point: Confident Christians pray and trust God’s will.

Practical Application:

Evaluate what shapes your prayers. Ask whether your prayers are primarily centered on your own desires or on God's kingdom and His will. Practice surrendering your requests with confidence that His purposes are always better than your own.

Make intercession a regular expression of loving others. Instead of merely worrying about struggling believers, intentionally bring them before the Lord in prayer. Trust that God is able to accomplish what you never could through your own efforts.

Confess sin quickly and honestly. Don't allow hidden sin to erode your confidence before God. Walk in the freedom of repentance, knowing that Christ has already secured your forgiveness.

Approach God with confidence, not fear. Because Jesus is your Advocate, you do not need to wonder whether God welcomes you into His presence. Come boldly to Him, trusting His character and resting in His grace.

Resources Currently Available at the Veritas Church Bookstore:

1 John - The Gospel-Centered Life in the Bible1-3 John - Knowing The Bible 12 Week Study1,2, & 3 John For You - God’s Word For YouDon’t Follow You Heart1, 2, and 3 John: Joyful Certainty: 7-Session Bible Study1-3 John ESV Scripture Journal

Do you have a question you want us to address? Submit it now!

1 John 5:6-13

In 1 John 5:6–13, John explains why believers can have complete confidence that Jesus truly is the Son of God and the only source of eternal life. By pointing to God's testimony through Jesus' life, death, and the Holy Spirit, John shows that Christianity is grounded in God's own witness, not wishful thinking. Those who receive God's testimony about Christ are transformed into people whose lives become a testimony for Christ, displaying a confident faith that the world cannot ignore.

Message Highlights:

God has provided overwhelming testimony that Jesus is His Son. Through Jesus' baptism, crucifixion, and the witness of the Holy Spirit, God has consistently testified to Christ's identity. Our faith rests on God's trustworthy testimony rather than human speculation.

Confident faith produces a devoted life. John wants believers not only to believe in Jesus but to know with confidence that they have eternal life. As confidence in Christ grows, devotion to Him naturally deepens.

Receiving the testimony about Jesus produces a testimony for Jesus. Genuine faith changes the way we live. Our priorities, convictions, and daily obedience become visible evidence that Christ has truly transformed us.

Eternal life begins now, not simply after death. Eternal life starts when God gives new spiritual life through faith in Christ. The reality of that new life is demonstrated by a life increasingly devoted to following Jesus.

Main Point: Whoever truly receives the testimony about Jesus has a testimony for Jesus.

Practical Application:

Strengthen your confidence by focusing on Christ. Rather than grounding your assurance in your performance, continually look to the person and finished work of Jesus. Confidence grows as your eyes remain fixed on Him.

Ask whether your life points others to Christ. Consider if your decisions, priorities, and sacrifices provide convincing evidence that Jesus is your greatest treasure. Let your daily life reinforce the gospel you profess.

Live with eternal perspective today. Remember that eternal life has already begun through Christ. Allow that reality to shape how you view success, suffering, and the temporary values of this world.

Boldly trust the exclusive claims of the gospel. The uniqueness of Christ may be unpopular, but God Himself has testified that Jesus alone gives life. Let that conviction produce humble confidence rather than hesitation.

Resources Currently Available at the Veritas Church Bookstore:

1 John - The Gospel-Centered Life in the Bible

1-3 John - Knowing The Bible 12 Week Study

1,2, & 3 John For You - God’s Word For You

Don’t Follow You Heart

1, 2, and 3 John: Joyful Certainty: 7-Session Bible Study

1-3 John ESV Scripture Journal

Do you have a question you want us to address? Submit it now!

1 John 5:1-5

In 1 John 5:1–5, John pulls back the curtain on what God is doing beneath the surface of salvation. This passage shows how new birth leads to faith, faith produces love for God, love for God expresses itself through obedience, and obedience grows into a life that overcomes the world. Rather than focusing merely on behavior modification, John points believers to the transforming work of God that creates genuine faith, fuels love for God, and empowers lasting victory over sin and the world.

Message Highlights:

Salvation begins with God’s work, not ours. John teaches that faith in Christ is evidence that God has already given new spiritual life. Believers do not create faith on their own; faith is the result of God’s gracious work of regeneration.

Love for God is demonstrated through joyful obedience. Genuine love for God is not merely emotional affection but a desire to obey His commands. As God transforms a heart, obedience becomes less of a burden and more of a delight.

Loving God and loving God’s people are inseparable. John connects love for fellow believers directly to love for God, showing that the healthiest way to love other Christians is to encourage one another’s devotion to God. A growing love for God naturally overflows into love for His people.

Victory over the world comes through faith. The Christian life is not ultimately about self-improvement but about God’s transforming work. As believers grow in faith and love for God, they increasingly overcome the lies, temptations, and pressures of the world.

Main Point: Overcoming comes through God, so the path to overcoming is a pursuit of God.

Practical Application:

Thank God for His initiating grace. Reflect on the reality that your faith is ultimately the result of God’s work in your life. Let that truth deepen your humility, gratitude, and worship.

Pursue God rather than merely pursuing self-improvement. Instead of focusing only on behavior change, focus on knowing, loving, and enjoying God. Lasting transformation flows from a growing relationship with Him.

Encourage others by displaying a joyful love for God. Your passion for God can strengthen the faith of fellow believers. Look for opportunities to stir others toward greater devotion and obedience.

Trust God’s power to change people. Whether you are praying for a family member, friend, or your own spiritual growth, remember that God is the one who gives new life and overcomes the world through His people.
