You Weren’t Raised to Think You Were Raised to Obey
What if what you were taught to call discipline was actually fear?
Think about the moments in childhood when you were made to feel guilty, ashamed, intimidated, or afraid of disappointing someone you loved.
You may have been told you were being corrected, taught respect, or prepared for the real world. But what if those experiences taught you something very different?
In this episode, we explore how fear became normalized as a parenting tool and how children learn to associate obedience with love, approval with worth, and punishment with doing something wrong.
We examine the difference between discipline and control, why fear produces compliance rather than genuine understanding, and how childhood conditioning follows us into adulthood.
The child who learns to avoid punishment may become the adult who fears making mistakes. The child who learns that love can be withdrawn may become the adult who constantly seeks approval.
We also explore how these patterns are passed from one generation to the next, often because parents repeat what they themselves were taught.
This isn't about declaring every parent abusive or every form of discipline harmful. It's about questioning the psychological mechanisms behind the way we were raised and whether what we normalized was actually healthy.

What If Having Children Isn’t as Selfless as We Think?
What if having children isn't as selfless as we think?
Nobody asked if you wanted to be born....
Yet one of the most consequential decisions a human being can make is bringing another person into existence and it is often treated as a natural next step in life rather than a choice worth deeply examining.
Why do people have children?
Is it love? Biology? The desire to create a family? The need for meaning, connection, or legacy? Is it a deeply personal decision or are we following expectations inherited from our parents, our culture, and society without ever questioning them?
In this episode of Beyond the Mind, we explore the psychology, motivations, and social conditioning behind parenthood. We examine why having children is so often celebrated as inherently selfless, why choosing not to have children can require an explanation, and what happens when we begin questioning one of life's most unquestioned expectations.
This isn't an argument against having children. It's an invitation to examine why we choose to have them — and whether we've ever truly questioned the reasons behind that choice.
Because creating another human being means bringing a new consciousness into the world: someone with their own desires, fears, struggles, relationships, and questions about existence.
And perhaps the question isn't simply whether we want children.
Perhaps it's whether we've thought deeply enough about what it means to bring another person into existence.
Why do we have children and how many of us have ever stopped to ask why?

You Think You’re Choosing What to Watch? You’re Not
You think you're choosing what to watch. But how much of that choice is actually yours?
You pick up your phone to check one message. Minutes later, you're scrolling through videos, comparing your life to other people's, reacting to outrage, absorbing fear, and consuming content you never intended to see.
We often blame ourselves for lacking discipline. But what if we're looking at the problem backwards?
In this episode of Beyond the Mind, we explore the business of attention and how social media platforms compete for one of our most valuable resources: our ability to focus.
We examine how algorithms shape what we see, why emotionally charged content captures our attention, how constant exposure to other people's lives influences our perceptions, and how the attention economy turns our time, emotions, and behavior into something that can be monetized.
Because the question isn't simply why we spend so much time on our phones.
It's who benefits from keeping us there.
And perhaps the most important question is this: if someone else can influence what captures your attention, how much influence can they have over what you think, what you value, and how you see the world?
Because attention is more than time.
It's a part of your life.
And who gets it matters.
