It is a podcast exploring the powerful connections between sport, leadership, faith, education, and personal growth. Through coaching reflections, athlete stories, leadership lessons, and meaningful conversations, the podcast examines how experiences on the court can shape character, purpose, resilience, and service beyond the game itself. Whether you are an athlete, coach, teacher, parent, or leader, Beyond the Scoreboard offers insights that extend far beyond wins and losses, focusing on the development of people, the impact of mentorship, and the lessons that sport teaches about life.
The scoreboard tells us what happened. Film helps us understand why.
In this episode of Beyond the Scoreboard, I begin with Proverbs 18:15: “The heart of the discerning gets knowledge. The ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” Wisdom does not stop at the first impression. It keeps looking, listening, studying, and asking better questions.
That idea becomes the foundation for this week’s U SPORTS analysis as I release my new Top 8 rankings for both the women’s and men’s sides.
Women’s Top 8:
TMU
Alberta
Saskatchewan
Carleton
Queen’s
McMaster
UBCO
Trinity Western
Men’s Top 8:
UBC
StFX
Carleton
Winnipeg
Queen’s
Victoria
Concordia
Dalhousie
These rankings are not based simply on standings or reputation. I look at quality of opposition, style of play, roster strength, execution, coaching, response to pressure, and whether the basketball looks sustainable against the strongest teams in the country.
I am also introducing more video analysis alongside the podcast. This week, I will release film edits from Saskatchewan vs Calgary, including Saskatchewan’s half-court offense, middle pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop actions, isolation opportunities, and some of the defensive problems Calgary struggled to solve.
I will not break down every possession in the audio episode. The film is there for listeners who want to go deeper and actually see what these university teams are running.
The scoreboard gives us the result. The film gives us understanding.
Faith. Coaching. Basketball.

Season 5, Episode 30 — More Than a Name
Reputation matters, but reputation cannot perform for you.
In this episode of Beyond the Scoreboard, I begin with 1 Corinthians 4:20: “For the Kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.” Paul is not talking about physical dominance or winning. He is challenging empty claims and reminding us that real faith has substance behind it.
That same principle carries into leadership and basketball. A title can create authority. A history can create respect. A ranking can create expectations. But eventually, actions have to prove what the name represents today.
This episode looks at several important U SPORTS results, including Trinity Western’s statement win over Victoria, TMU’s wins over McMaster, Carleton’s victories over Queen’s, Saskatchewan’s sweep of Calgary, UBC’s continued reliance on individual talent, and the struggles of historically strong programs such as McMaster and Windsor.
The central question is simple:
Who are you right now?
Because faith is more than a name, leadership is more than a title, and basketball is more than a reputation.
Faith. Coaching. Basketball.

Season 5, Episode 29 — What You Inherit
Leadership does not always begin with a blank page.
Sometimes you inherit history, expectations, relationships, standards, and even success that somebody else helped build before you arrived.
In this episode of Beyond the Scoreboard, I begin with 1 Corinthians 3:10–11, where Paul writes that one person may lay a foundation and another may build on it — but each person must be careful how they build, because the true foundation is Jesus Christ.
From there, I explore leadership as stewardship before turning to U SPORTS basketball. Calgary raised last season’s Canada West championship banner before facing Saskatchewan, creating a powerful picture of what it means to inherit success and then become responsible for what comes next. Saskatchewan won 66–59, while Calgary’s effort, rebounding, shooting, and turnover problems told a deeper story about the difference between competing hard and controlling a game.
On the men’s side, Queen’s survived Ottawa 77–76 while Carleton dominated Algoma 82–44, setting up an intriguing matchup between two teams arriving through very different experiences.
Respect what came before you. Understand what you inherited. Add something meaningful. And be careful how you build.
Faith. Coaching. Basketball.
