Micro-Show: Being Busy Doesn't Mean You're Being Productive
I'm really good at starting things. Planning them out first? Not so much.
As a creative and business owner, I get excited about new ideas and tend to jump right in. I'll start building something, moving furniture around the studio, or launching a new project before I've really thought through what the finished product should look like.
Sometimes that works out great. Other times, I waste a lot of time figuring things out along the way.
In this Beyond the Studio micro-show, I'm talking about Habit #2 from Stephen R. Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Begin With the End in Mind.
It's something I struggle with because my willingness to jump into projects is both one of my biggest strengths and one of my biggest weaknesses.
I share a few examples from building podcast sets at Round Rock Studio, how my studio manager Taylor helps keep my ideas from turning into chaos, and why I'm learning to slow down and actually plan before I start.
One of my favorite takeaways from the book is that it's entirely possible to be incredibly busy without actually being effective.
And man, that one hits home.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your next big idea is to stop for a minute, figure out where you're going, and then get to work.

Micro-Show: Your Future Self Is Counting on You
There’s a quote I come back to all the time:
“I didn’t come this far to only come this far.”
Running a business, raising a family, making things, paying bills, and just being an adult can feel heavy sometimes. There are days when I feel like throwing in the towel too.
But then I think about the younger version of myself.
That guy had his own stress, uncertainty, and reasons to quit—but he didn’t. He kept going, did the work, and built the foundation for the life I have today. I’m incredibly grateful for that.
And it works the other way too.
Right now, I’m the past version of myself that 47-year-old Brent will look back on someday. Hopefully he’ll be grateful that 37-year-old Brent kept going when things got difficult.
Your future self is counting on you.
In this Beyond the Studio micro-show, I talk about why this idea has stuck with me, appreciating the work your past self put in, and continuing to build something for the person you’ll become.
Don’t quit now. You didn’t come this far to only come this far.
