About Beyond the Two Pillars of Recovery

The Two Pillars of Recovery® serve as reminders to individuals with addiction/serious substance use disorders of how nature works and how to work with nature to establish recovery. If someone with addiction wishes to prevent undesired substance use, Keep your distance! reminds them that talent and good intentions do not guarantee behavior, and lifestyle changes are often necessary. Ask for help! reminds them that lasting recovery from addiction is far more likely when they continuously cultivate healthy connections with others. Beyond The Two Pillars of Recovery® reinforces the message of hope and practical action delivered by the original two pillars while speaking to the much larger group of people in our communities who do not meet criteria for serious substance use disorders, inviting them to reflect on risks inherent in their use of substances and other behaviors in light of their personal risk tolerance.

   Episode #40: "It only takes one moment of drinking to change a life forever." (Colleen Clifford)

   Colleen Clifford's memoir Life Beyond the Binge: A Commercial Fisherwoman's Journey Home was released close to our recording date. In this Episode, Colleen reflects on the 40 years she intermittently consumed excessive amounts of alcohol, collecting a series of could-have-been-tragic intoxicated moments until she saw through her excuses and resolved to stop putting other people at risk (adding her own safety as an important afterthought). Colleen invites individuals making decisions about drinking to take her experience into account: "...eventually, something unpleasant will show up in the drinking game of life, should you choose to play."

   Episode #39: New Research on the Use of Substances to Regulate Affect

   Dr. Sunniva Christiansen — Norwegian addiction specialist, child & adolescent psychiatrist, and researcher — was told not to mention "self medication" to patients during addiction treatment, but her patients used the phrase so often themselves it prompted her to investigate how people with substance use disorders experience and understand affect regulation.  Her method of gathering data — lengthy, semi-structured, person-centered conversations — was so educational and empowering that it merits its own attention as a treatment modality.

   Episode #38: How Place Impacts Health and Well-Being

   Geography professor Dr. Rina Ghose describes the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping technology to integrate data on demographics, health, economics, and other variables to guide urban planners and empower community activists. In urban centers, for example, intertwined racial segregation and poverty contribute to disproportionate overdose deaths. Accurate GIS knowledge of community problems does not eliminate the problems, but it provides citizens and public officials a clear picture of needs to address.
