E93: Don’t Wait for a Wake-Up Call: One Man’s Health Journey at 50
What does it take to finally get serious about your health?
For my friend Derrick, turning 50 wasn't the only wake-up call. Losing his twin brother at just 48 and later experiencing a health scare of his own forced him to think differently about where his health could be headed.
In this special episode of Beyond the Workout, I sit down with Derrick for an honest conversation about his journey.
We talk about the habits he developed growing up, stress eating, the challenge of staying consistent, finding support at home, making time for exercise with a busy schedule, and why protecting his independence matters so much to him now.
Derrick hasn't reached his goal yet. That's exactly why I wanted you to hear his story.
He's in the middle of the journey.
And when he said, “I feel like I was 25 yesterday,” it was a powerful reminder of just how quickly the years can pass while we're thinking about making a change.
If you've been telling yourself you'll get serious about your health later, this conversation is for you.
Don't sit on the fence. Get started.
The best time to start may have been years ago. The next best time is now.

E92: Food Is Fuel for Your Future: Simple Nutrition After 50
What if every meal you ate was either helping your future—or quietly working against it?
After 50, nutrition doesn’t need to become more complicated. In fact, one of the biggest problems is often the opposite: too many diets, too many trends, too much conflicting advice.
In this episode of Beyond the Workout, I share why I believe it’s better to come back to the fundamentals: protein, vegetables, fruit, healthy fats, fiber, water, and consistent choices you can actually maintain.
I also share some of my own experience trying to rely too heavily on exercise while missing an important piece: the basics of my nutrition.
Because you can train hard, move more, and work on your strength—but food supports all of it.
Every meal is a choice between simply satisfying today’s hunger or investing in tomorrow’s health.
So here’s the question for this week:
What’s one healthy eating habit you’ve been meaning to improve?

E91: Train for Life, Not the Mirror: Why Strength Training Matters After 50
Why do you strength train?
To lose weight? Fit into smaller clothes? Look better in the mirror?
Those are common reasons. But after 50, there's another reason that may become much more important:
Protecting your ability to live independently.
In this episode of Beyond the Workout, I want you to think differently about strength. Carrying your own groceries. Lifting your luggage. Climbing stairs. Working around the house. Getting down on the floor and back up again. These everyday activities are what we're really training for.
I also introduce the idea of a “strength savings account.” Every time you strength train, you're making another investment in the strength and capability you want available in the future.
So here's the question I want you to consider:
What do you never want to lose the ability to do?
Let that answer help determine why you train.
Because you're not training for the gym.
You're training for your life.
