Welcome to Beyond the Yield, a podcast from Alberta Grains focused on what impacts your farm, in the field and beyond.
In this podcast, we’ll talk with experts and policy makers from all corners of Canadian agriculture. These conversations will take you across the value chain, from research, agronomy and extension information that helps you grow your crops to the policy and market issues that impact the decisions you make on your farm.
Episode 6: From Field to Brewer - How CMBTC Connects Canadian Barley to Global Customers with Peter Watts
In this episode, Alberta Grains’ Director of Government Relations, Policy and Markets, Shannon Sereda, speaks with Peter Watts, Managing Director of the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC).
They discuss how CMBTC connects Canadian barley farmers with maltsters, brewers and customers around the world, helping demonstrate the value and quality of Canadian malting barley.
The conversation explores how CMBTC uses applied research, technical expertise and customer engagement to understand what end users need, communicate those needs back through the value chain and help address quality challenges when they arise.
They also discuss this year’s challenging harvest conditions, the importance of managing customer expectations and maintaining Canada’s reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality malting barley.

Episode 5: How moisture conditions impact nutrient cycling, availability and loss with Dr. Erin Daly and Dr. David Burton
In this episode, Alberta Grains agronomy extension specialist Ruoxi Xia is joined by Dr. David Burton, Professor at Dalhousie University, and Dr. Erin Daly, Project Manager of CanN2ONet, to discuss how extreme moisture conditions, including drought and flood, impact nutrient cycling, nutrient availability and nitrogen loss.
The conversation explores how a network of researchers is working to better understand the impact of soil moisture conditions on nutrient mineralization, and how nutrient release synchronizes with plant uptake.
Looking forward, their work lays the foundation for more accurate variable-rate technology that takes into consideration nutrient release from the soil. All of them ultimately help answer the million-dollar question “how to fertilize the crop in the most profitable way?”.

Episode 4: How Stubble Management Impacts Soil Nutrients, Moisture and Temperature with Dr. Jeff Schoenau
In this episode, Alberta Grains agronomy extension specialist Ruoxi Xia is joined by Dr.Jeff Schoenau, Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, to discuss strawmanagement. This episode explores how retaining and removing the straw impacts soil moisture andtemperature in both knoll and depressional areas in the field. They look at the valuestraw has to soil nutrient and soil health, discussing the recommended practices forstraw management.
