Great Texts of The Bible: The Child Jesus in Jerusalem | Luke 2:40 | Pastor William Hixson

The Return to NazarethAnd when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.The Boy Jesus at the Temple in JerusalemNow his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.Athens Bible Church Linkshttps://www.athensbible.org/donate/https://www.athensbible.org/category/podcast/https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bible-audio-sermons/id1871738604https://www.podbean.com/pw/pbblog-bsh6y-14f06b5https://open.spotify.com/show/2esKDFsAqveC3LBoNY6ZFqhttps://music.amazon.com/podcasts/4ab90d6f-3f17-44c1-8b3d-a9c57e7fea2e/bible-audio-sermonshttps://iheart.com/podcast/319104652https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOmKvTn0vS8cwZKK7sdKE5whttps://rumble.com/user/AthensBiblehttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100009340326242https://www.athensbible.org/category/short-bible-essay/https://www.athensbible.org/category/southern-ohio-churches/https://www.athensbible.org/category/the-bible-says/https://www.athensbible.org/category/guest-sermons/https://www.athensbible.org/category/life-of-jesus-by-location/https://www.athensbible.org/category/miracles-of-jesus/https://www.athensbible.org/category/jerusalem-in-the-gospels/https://www.athensbible.org/category/christian-living-in-a-digital-age/https://www.athensbible.org/category/marriage-and-family/

Bible Doctrine: The Angels of God | Steve Benson

In the Bible, angels are spiritual beings who serve as God’s messengers, worshippers, and agents carrying out divine purposes, appearing throughout Scripture in varied forms and roles. What Angels Are in the BibleAngels are consistently portrayed as created spiritual beings who act on God’s behalf. They are not divine, but they possess power, knowledge, and presence beyond human capability. They appear in both the Old and New Testaments, often at pivotal moments in salvation history.Core Roles of AngelsMessengers — The most common role; the Hebrew mal’akh and Greek angelos both mean “messenger.” Angels deliver divine instructions, warnings, and promises (e.g., to Abraham, Daniel, Mary).Protectors — Angels guard individuals and nations, such as the angel who protects Israel in Exodus or the angel who frees Peter from prison in Acts.Worshippers — Angels continually praise God, especially in visions of heaven (Isaiah 6; Revelation 4–5).Warriors — Some angels engage in spiritual conflict, such as Michael contending with opposing forces in Daniel and Revelation.Guides — Angels sometimes provide direction or interpretation, as in prophetic visions. How Angels AppearBiblical descriptions vary widely:Human-like figures — Often indistinguishable from humans unless revealed (Genesis 18–19).Radiant or terrifying beings — Many encounters begin with “Do not be afraid,” suggesting overwhelming presence.Symbolic or visionary forms — Prophetic books describe angels with wings, multiple faces, or fiery appearance, though these are often part of symbolic visions rather than everyday encounters.Named AngelsOnly a few angels are named in the Bible:Michael — A warrior and protector, called an “archangel” in Jude; appears in Daniel and Revelation.Gabriel — A messenger who interprets visions for Daniel and announces births in Luke.Satan — Originally an adversarial figure among the heavenly beings in early texts; later becomes associated with evil and opposition to God.Categories and HierarchiesThe Bible hints at different types of heavenly beings:Cherubim — Guardians of sacred space (Eden, the Ark of the Covenant); depicted as powerful, multi‑form beings in Ezekiel.Seraphim — Fiery beings who worship God in Isaiah’s vision.Archangels — A term used sparingly; Michael is the only one explicitly named.Angels in the Old vs. New TestamentOld Testament — Angels often appear as God’s agents in historical narratives and prophetic visions.New Testament — Angels play major roles in announcing Jesus’s birth, ministering to him, proclaiming the resurrection, and participating in apocalyptic scenes. What Angels Are NotThey are not deceased humans; Scripture treats angels and humans as distinct orders of creation. They are not omniscient or omnipotent; their authority is always derived from God.Popular depictions (e.g., winged humans, halos) are largely artistic rather than biblical.Mainhttps://www.athensbible.orgMissionshttps://www.athensbible.org/our-ministries/our-missionaries/Nursing Homeshttps://www.athensbible.org/nursing-home-visits/Video Archiveshttps://www.athensbible.org/sunday-morning-videos/https://www.athensbible.org/sunday-school-videos/https://www.athensbible.org/sunday-evening-videos/Bible Study Categorieshttps://www.athensbible.org/category/classic-hymn-books/https://www.athensbible.org/category/bible-history/https://www.athensbible.org/category/the-apostle-paul/https://www.athensbible.org/category/bible-animals/

Will They Obey | Jeremiah 42 | Pastor William Hixson

Jeremiah 42 unfolds after the fall of Jerusalem, when the remaining Judean leaders—terrified of Babylon’s reprisals—approach the prophet Jeremiah seeking divine direction. Their request appears sincere: they ask Jeremiah to pray for them, promising complete obedience to whatever God reveals. Yet the chapter exposes a deep tension between their words and their intentions. They want God’s blessing, but not God’s will.Jeremiah waits ten days for God’s answer, emphasizing that divine guidance comes on God’s timetable, not human urgency. When the message arrives, it is surprisingly hopeful. God instructs the remnant to stay in the land, promising protection, rebuilding, and renewed stability. Despite the devastation of exile, God’s will is rooted in restoration rather than escape. The command to remain is an invitation to trust: if they stay, God will plant them; if they flee, they will uproot themselves. The alternative—fleeing to Egypt—represents the old temptation Israel repeatedly faced. Egypt symbolizes human security, political alliances, and self‑reliance. God warns that if they choose Egypt, the very disasters they fear—sword, famine, and death—will follow them there. The irony is sharp: the place they believe will save them is the place where judgment will meet them. Jeremiah 42 thus becomes a meditation on how fear distorts discernment. When people are driven by anxiety, they often run toward the very dangers they hope to avoid. The chapter also exposes the danger of conditional obedience. The remnant’s vow to obey “whether good or bad” is revealed as hollow in the next chapter, but the seeds of that disobedience are already present in Jeremiah 42. Their request for guidance is not an act of surrender but an attempt to secure divine approval for a decision they have already made. The chapter warns that seeking God’s will while clinging to one’s own agenda leads inevitably to spiritual self‑deception.Theologically, Jeremiah 42 highlights a recurring biblical theme: true faith requires staying where God places us, even when circumstances appear threatening. God’s promise of protection is not tied to geography but to obedience. The remnant’s refusal to trust God’s word mirrors Israel’s earlier wilderness rebellions and anticipates later patterns of exile and return. In every era, the people’s future hinges on whether they trust God’s character more than their fears. For modern readers, Jeremiah 42 offers a sobering lesson. It challenges us to examine whether we seek God’s guidance with open hearts or with predetermined plans. It reminds us that fear can disguise itself as prudence, and that genuine faith often requires remaining in difficult places rather than fleeing to seemingly safer alternatives. Above all, the chapter affirms that God’s will, even when counterintuitive, is always oriented toward restoration, stability, and life.Athens Bible Church Linkshttps://www.athensbible.org/category/podcast/https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bible-audio-sermons/id1871738604https://www.podbean.com/pw/pbblog-bsh6y-14f06b5https://open.spotify.com/show/2esKDFsAqveC3LBoNY6ZFqhttps://music.amazon.com/podcasts/4ab90d6f-3f17-44c1-8b3d-a9c57e7fea2e/bible-audio-sermonshttps://iheart.com/podcast/319104652https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOmKvTn0vS8cwZKK7sdKE5whttps://rumble.com/user/AthensBiblehttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100009340326242https://www.athensbible.org/category/short-bible-essay/https://www.athensbible.org/category/southern-ohio-churches/https://www.athensbible.org/category/the-bible-says/https://www.athensbible.org/category/guest-sermons/https://www.athensbible.org/category/life-of-jesus-by-location/https://www.athensbible.org/category/miracles-of-jesus/https://www.athensbible.org/category/jerusalem-in-the-gospels/https://www.athensbible.org/category/christian-living-in-a-digital-age/https://www.athensbible.org/category/marriage-and-family/
