28 | Emily - Multiple Pregnancy Losses, IVF, Type 2 Diabetes, 2 C-Sections, Down Syndrome, NICU, PPD

In this Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month episode of Bigger Than Birth, we sit down with Emily, a stay-at-home mom of two and former school counselor, to honor the four babies she lost before her daughters were born. Emily shares her pregnancy loss story with raw honesty, from being told to “focus on your weight” during her first miscarriage to the grief, guilt, and depression that followed repeated losses. She opens up about a type 2 diabetes diagnosis at 29, a uterine polyp, genetic testing after miscarriage, two rounds of IVF, and why a supportive OB team changed everything, including the day her whole office cheered after a healthy ultrasound. She also shares how therapy helped her through the darkest stretch of her grief. Her rainbow baby journey brought both joy and the unexpected. A routine NIPT test led to a prenatal Down syndrome diagnosis, and Emily explains how she navigated a high risk, plus size pregnancy with maternal-fetal medicine, fetal echocardiograms, and blood pressure monitoring. Her breech baby arrived by C-section, Emily hemorrhaged and lost half her blood, and her newborn was transferred by ambulance to a higher level NICU, where they stayed four weeks with help from Ronald McDonald House. Emily also shares her second pregnancy, a scheduled repeat C-section, and a harder recovery, followed by postpartum depression and the bonding struggles few people talk about. She discusses breastfeeding challenges, GLP-1 and insulin use around pregnancy, diet culture, weight stigma in healthcare, and why finding a provider who sees you as a whole person matters. This conversation is a gentle reminder that grief and joy can live side by side, and that no one has to walk through loss alone. It’s a powerful listen for anyone navigating loss, high risk pregnancy, or the road to motherhood. 27 | Teniel - Smooth Plus Size Pregnancy, Vaginal Birth, Postpartum Magnesium Drip

In this episode of Bigger Than Birth, we sit down with Teniel, a first-time mom who got pregnant at 28 after just a couple of months of trying, despite years of messaging that plus size women struggle to conceive. Teniel shares how she found out she was pregnant, from sore breasts and a missed period to a drink that suddenly had no effect, and how a longtime family doctor once told her that her weight and history of high blood pressure could make motherhood difficult. She lost 60 pounds afterward, and chose a new OB when it was time to start her family. Her prenatal care came with real challenges. At just eight weeks, Teniel was told a C-section was likely because of her BMI, a prediction that stayed in the back of her mind throughout pregnancy, along with repeated comments that her baby would be big. She was classified as high risk, managed high blood pressure with daily medication, and received in-depth ultrasounds and NIPT screening through a maternal-fetal medicine specialist. She also shares a stressful ER visit for spotting around 12 weeks, when her blood pressure spiked and hospital staff didn’t realize she was pregnant, plus how Medi-Cal covered her care while she was unemployed. Otherwise, her pregnancy was surprisingly easy, with no morning sickness and only a few food aversions. Her birth story is a reminder that plus size labor and delivery doesn’t always follow the script. Days before her scheduled induction, Teniel’s water broke at home with meconium in the fluid. She got an epidural, labored with Pitocin augmentation, and delivered her daughter vaginally in just five pushes, no C-section needed. Postpartum, her blood pressure climbed and she needed IV medication and a magnesium drip as a precaution. Teniel also talks about breastfeeding with larger breasts, her decision to move to formula, recovering from a minor tear, and finding peace of mind through online pregnancy communities. This episode is proof that a plus size, high risk pregnancy can still end in a smooth vaginal birth and a healthy baby girl. 26 | Brittany - 4 Births, Vaginal & C-Section Deliveries, Placenta Accreta, Hysterectomy, PPD

In this episode of Bigger Than Birth, Brittany, a mom of four boys from Ohio, walks us through the wide range of experiences across her pregnancies and deliveries. Her first birth, at 22, was calm and unmedicated with a supportive OB who never fixated on her weight. Her second pregnancy followed an early loss and second trimester loss which brought her to a new provider who diagnosed her with gestational diabetes without ever administering a glucose test, based solely on assumptions about her size. Her third pregnancy involved a high-risk classification after recurrent miscarriage, an attempted VBAC, a difficult unmedicated Pitocin induction, and a baby born with a heart murmur. The heart of this conversation is Brittany's fourth pregnancy, which began with a miscarriage scare and progressed into a diagnosis of placenta previa and placenta accreta, a rare and dangerous condition in which the placenta grows into the uterine wall. Brittany describes months of bleeding, repeated hospitalizations, and eventually being hospitalized full-time as her medical team worked to balance her safety against reaching a viable gestational age. She delivered via emergency C-section at 33 weeks, followed immediately by an emergency hysterectomy to stop life-threatening hemorrhaging. Her son spent weeks in the NICU, during which Brittany also experienced her most severe postpartum depression, compounded by D-MER, a hormonal breastfeeding condition that causes sudden waves of dysphoria during letdown. Brittany speaks openly about grieving the loss of her ability to carry future children, navigating medical bias throughout her pregnancies, the end of a relationship during her NICU stay, and the long road to rebuilding her mental health and finding real support. She also touches on the importance of leaving unsafe situations and reaching out for help. This episode is a powerful, unfiltered look at how dramatically different pregnancy and birth experiences can be, even within the same body and the same family — and a reminder that healing is possible, even after the hardest year of your life.
