AI Briefings: Extracorporeal Photodynamic Therapy: A Novel Approach to Treat Pneumonia
Pneumonia remains a major global health problem, made more difficult to treat by the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Researchers are therefore investigating treatments that attack microbes in different ways. One option is antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), which uses light to activate a compound that produces reactive oxygen molecules capable of damaging bacterial cells.
In a study published in Biophotonics Discovery, an international team of researchers tested a noninvasive form of aPDT in mice infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae, a major cause of bacterial pneumonia. Under the most effective conditions, treatment reduced bacterial levels in the lungs by nearly three orders of magnitude and increased survival from 40 percent to 80 percent.

AI Briefings: Multimodal Optical Imaging Strategy to Evaluate the Microscopic Biodistribution of SERS Gold Nanoparticles Across Histology Sections
Multiphoton luminescence microscopy can effectively detectsurface-enhanced Raman scattering gold nanoparticles in biological tissues, enabling researchers to assess the biodistribution of these nanoparticles in anon-destructive manner. A study recently published in Biophotonics Discoveryaimed to address the challenges faced in evaluating the long-term effects ofSERS gold nanoparticles, which are increasingly utilized in molecular imagingand diagnostics due to their unique optical properties. Existing techniques toanalyze biodistribution often either require destructive sample preparation orlack the required spatial resolution and sensitivity.

Commercialization in Biophotonics: QUEL Imaging with Ethan LaRochelle and Alberto Ruiz
What does it take to turn a niche research tool into a thriving business that supports the development of next-generation medical imaging technologies?
In this episode of our commercialization series, Darren and Gwen sit down with Ethan LaRochelle and Alberto Ruiz, co-founders of QUEL Imaging to explore the intersection of biophotonics innovation, standardization, and entrepreneurship. Founded while LaRochelle and Ruiz were still graduate students at Dartmouth, QUEL Imaging develops optical tissue phantoms and reference targets that help researchers, device manufacturers, and regulatory teams evaluate the performance of fluorescence imaging systems.
The conversation explores the science, standards, and entrepreneurship behind optical phantoms and reference targets for fluorescence imaging. Ethan LaRochelle and Alberto Ruiz discuss how QUEL Imaging helps researchers and medical device companies characterize imaging systems, improve measurement consistency, and support the development of fluorescence-guided surgery and other biomedical optics technologies. They also share the story of building QUEL Imaging from an idea in Brian Pogue's lab into a growing company, offering valuable insights on commercialization, scientific innovation, and bridging the gap between academic research and industry needs.
